To Minny for Havlat. Good move by San Jose. They get a bit of salary relief and pick up a very dangerous sniper to boot. Heatley is a bit younger, but I'm not sure he's an upgrade on Havlat. He's been on a bit of a downswing, while Havlat seems to have found the touch. www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=370854

Beat me to it.
Pretty clear that the Sharks were fed up with Heatley's post season disappearing act, etc. Havlat's a skilled player. He's been reasonably healthy the last 3 years. You can forget how big he actually is because he's not that physical. I think he'll enjoy not being "the guy" there, and playing the cycle game with Thornton.
Not really sure of Minny's motivation here. More cap hit and term. We're they that much on the bubble?

Interesting deal. It's rare you see straight-up swaps like this, between high-level players with no picks or throw-ins of any kind.
Imagine if they'd bundled this with the Burns deal, it would've been a huge blockbuster.

I could kind of live with Heatley's contract & playoff swoons if he was still scoring 40-50 goals during the season. But last year at 26 goals & with little playoff production - no thanks.
