C'mon, do we want any of their player? Can we afford to lose a Hossa or Hainsey for those players?
Robert Lang: Only 1 problem, he's a center.. we already have more than we need, there is no way we'll push Ribeiro to make place.
Jaromir Jagr: Too expensive Peter Bondra: Would be a better fit next to Koivu than Bullis IMHO Sergei Gonchar: This is the one we should aim for, I'm sorry for Bouillon, or even Rivet, but that's the best offensive defenseman in the game.. AND A FRIEND FOR MARKOV!!
Do you think Washington will be willing to trade Gonchar for Hainsey?

The Leafs are said to be seriously interested in Gonchar. They don't need Lang, and Jagr appears to be headed to the Rangers. The Avs are said to be interested in Kolzig.
Bondra will play only one more season.

The Bruins wouldn't go for Kolzig, although the Rangers might. Dunham has a concussion.

I heard the habs named mentioned in the group ofteams in the east eyeing Gonchar. If it cost us only prospects i'd look at it but no real blue chippers.IMO I don't see the habs involved,it will be interesting to see if teams load up will Bob want to participate? HFTO

HFTO Gonchar is a $6.5 million arbitration case for each of the next 2 years until he becomes a UFA at 31. A little steep if you ask me. If he were to be acquired, where does he play ? His presence would puch Markov to the third pairing. Now that would be a complete waste. The only 2 players I would be interested in from Washington and who I think would fit in great with the Habs are Mike Grier and Jeff Halpern (RH Center and only 27 years of age). Hossa and a 2nd pick would do.

Sergei Gonchar is a pretty special player, and if you believe in winning through goaltending and a dominant blueline then Gonchar would be a compelling addition to Montreal's backline. He's 29, 6-2, 220 lbs, a great skater, and one of the best offensive and, perhaps more important, one of the best puck-moving dmen in the NHL.
He's definitely worth 1st round picks and/or elite prospects. Gainey may not want to bite, however. He's got a budding star in Souray along with Markov and Hainsey in the wings. He may want to use our best prospects to deal with our size/scoring issues up front, but acquiring a total stud dman in the prime of his career is never a bad thing.

It rhymes but it chymes.

According to Arthur Staple of Newsday, Anson Carter would be part of the deal for Jagr. Also, one of the names mentioned in a possible trade by the Rangers for a defenseman is Karl Dykhuis.

I wouldn't mind Sergie Gonchar.
I'd prefer Brendan Witt though....
Souray - Brisebois
Markov - Rivet
Witt - Quintal
Komisarek

Brendan Witt and Jeff Halpern would be my targets on the Caps, but unfortunately, they probably aren't available.
Gonchar would be nice too, but he would be too expensive to acquire and keep. Also, after this year he would probably be blocking Hainsey's spot on the left side.
Rather than trading for help on defense, I would rather have BG focus on using his assets to acquire a first-line LWer.

The fire sale is on. Washington picks up 1/2 the salary (20 mill). The Rangers as buyers . . . what a surprise. Sorry, Slats, he ain't going to get you to the promised land! The only reason to pick up anyone (Gonchar) is to keep someone else from getting him (Leafs). Wouldn't be enough of a reason (think long-term).

Not really straight up. The Caps are also picking up about $20mm of the $44mm remaining on Jagr's contract. So the Caps get Carter and $24mm in payroll relief for 4 years and the Rangers get Jagr for the next 4 years at $6mm per year. Not a bad deal I guess for the Rangers, but what do you want to bet that they STILL don't make the playoffs this year?

When you take into account Carter's salary going the other way the Rangers are adding less than 4 million in payroll for a huge talent upgrade.

That's Glen Sather's last hope..
If Jagr wakes up.. good for them (not for us!), but what the Rangers need are real 3rd liners, not other superstars!!

Not to worry. The Rangers are really short of defensemen. Kasparaitis and de Vries are gone long term and the Rangers have other injuries at D. Dunham has a concussion. Lindros has the flu.

Jagr'll be good for about a dozen games and then he'll fall back to sleep. If he wakes up. Rangers are not a threat to the Habs -- especially if we keep winning!

The Habs have to keep looking forward and at the teams ahead of us, and let the teams in 9th and beyond worry about themselves. Keep winning boys with your ragtag group of vets and rookies who are showing what playing like a real "team" can do in the standings.

According to Arthur Staple of Newsday, one of the names mentioned in a possible trade by the Rangers for a defenseman is Karl Dykhuis. I could see that happening. Dykhuis is mobile and experienced. If they're willing to accept his 'soft' play, he just might fit. Not sure of his contract status, but it could get the Habs off the hook for another buy-out.
