I don't consider myself a metal head, but I have strong liking for vintage Black Sabbath that is, everything from "Sabotage" and before. I didn't like anything after that album (The Mob Rules is an okay single). However, I still like Metallica. It was my only souvenir from my trip to Winnipeg back in '97. Having said all of that, there are other selected metal songs I do enjoy, but Anvil really ... well ... sucked. I don't consider myself a pure metal head, as it's merely one of the genres of music I listen to. Hell, Sabbath don't even consider themselves a metal band. Going back, they were one of the pioneers of the heavier, darkening sounds, but their chord progressions are totally different. When compared to what is considered true metal, the originator is Judas Priest imo. The documentary Anvil did a couple of years ago is pretty interesting. Sad in many ways. Musically, they were and are pretty talented guys. Talent doesn't equal good music though, and lyrically they were terrible. I read somewhere that Sabbath is considered the original metal band (if I find it again I'll post it), but I like your description just the same. I used to have some Judas Priest in the collection but those albums, along with many other originals, went under in a flood we had recently. I'm not a metal head by any means, but I have some Metallica in my CD collection along with some Tonic, Bush, etc. The thing is, though, I have to be in the mood to listen to them. However, I also have some country (and western), pop (Mrs Dis likes this), new wave and classical (I credit my youthful liking of Bugs Bunny for that). I'm mostly into classic rock and this makes up the bulk of my collection. One of the guys I went to Cooper with told me about the Anvil special. I'll pull it up on You Tube someday. Cheers.

Dis,
Check out Sam Dunn. He's a Canadian anthropologist. He's produced two EXCELLENT documentaries on Metal. A Headbangers Guide, and Global Metal. The first is sort of the family tree of metal. The second is how metal has branched out all over the world. He travels the globe meeting people who are part of local metal scenes, and he explores how it's part of social change in those areas. He's also got a new series running on Much More. In it, he's exploring everything. Presently, it's the origins of metal. He's had extensive interviews with EVERYONE. He spoke at length with Sabbath (minus Ozzie and the late Dio). They don't think of themselves as metal. They feel like hard rock pioneers.
I had always considered them a metal pioneer, but Dunn's break down of it and the interviews really have me changing my view.

Found out today that Tom Petty is slated to come here in June ... another can't miss concert for me. He's heading to Halifax to!! I'm hearing rumours here that the tickets are going to be in the $170 dollar range .... any idea what they are in Halifax? Might be cheaper for me to see him in Halifax at that price.

Skilly, they're saying that the Petty shows in Halifax and St John's will be the last North American shows before he heads over to the UK. So, he's taking EVERYTHING in his touring arsenal with him when he comes here. The show in Europe is toward the end of June, 2012. So, he'll be hitting the Atlantic Provinces sometime between Victoria Day and then would be my guess. The Halifax date is not firm yet, but the promotor has blocked off various dates that are currently available at the Metro Centre - right down town.
$170 is steap. Metallica was in that area, and they had 30k on Citadel Hill that night. When Pearl Jam was here in 2005 - widely considered one of the best concerts this city has ever seen (they played 3 plus hours and had a great time with the crowd), tickets in the bowl were $90. Floor was more I believe. Prince was just here recently, and I believe floor seats were the better part of $200, lower bowl half that, and upper bowl around 50. Petty will likely fall in line with that some how.

sounds like Petty will be in Europe . . . but it's usually a good week, Dis. I'll post the link when the schedule comes out -- normally in April. It's a 2 week thing, 5 stages, 6-11 every night, noon - 11 weekends. some duds, some great acts, and I always come away finding a new band or two to like.

You simply can't trust June weather in Nova Scotia. This is a prime reason why a 15-20000 seat outdoor stadium in the Halifax Reg Municipality makes NO SENSE. Let's throw money at a stadium that can only be used, realistically, 6 mos of the year. Throw a roof on it, and do it right. Then you can use it year round and make money.

make it big enough to host a CFL team . . . they may or may not come! If one ever makes out east, and I'm not holding my breath, Moncton has the inside track. It's a more central location from which to draw in fans. IMO, the Maritimes is not a big football market. So, having a team centrally located makes a lot of sense.

Almost fell off my seat when I saw the July lineup in Belleville, Ontario, this summer. ========================================================== The lineup for RockFest 2012 was announced at a special launch party at the Empire Theatre tonight.
George Thorogood, Boston and The Steve Miller Band will headline the three night-music festival in Downtown Belleville on July 26-27-28.
Thorogood will open the event on Thursday July 26. Boston with special guests 54-40 take the stage on Friday July 27 and The Steve Miller Band, with special guests Belleville native Chris Caddell and The Wreckage on Saturday July 28.=========================================================== Might have to take some time off work in July. Tickets go on sale Saturday. Might have to pay you a visit CO. Cheers. Edit: I saw Chris Caddell about 10 years ago in a pub here in K-town. He was only an 18-year-old kid, but he could play anything on the guitar. Might be interesting to see how he's come along. Another kid from that area is Justin Bunn. I saw Justin when he was 15 or so, and he opened for the late Jeff Healey. That was 12 years ago now I think.

Well, I guess that gives kind of a hint as to who might be at Bluesfest this summer [lineup out at the end of April].
Miller has been here a couple of times, last year the latest . . . entertaining.
Thorogood a bunch of times too . . . entertaining the first couple, but now boring, no matter how good a guitarist he might be . . . same lines, same drinking songs *yawn*
Boston . . . haven't seen . . . could be good.

And tickets go on pre-sale tomorrow for Deep Purple , February 2nd, at Mile One in St. John's. This concert is how my wife and my friends fooled me. My friends bought the tickets, saying they got mine. One of my friends told me his wife will be emailing my wife so she can email the money. I was asking for the ticket a few times and he said he'd bring it in and always forgot it. Little did I know that I was never going to Deep Purple. Friggers got me good ... not really a Deep Purple fan anyway.

Madonna just released her Canadian tour dates. From Canoe.ca
===================================================
The Material Girl will perform at Montreal’s Bell Centre on Aug. 30; at Quebec City’s The Plains of Abraham on Sept. 1; at Ottawa’s Scotiabank Place on Sept. 10; at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre on Sept. 12; and at Vancouver’s Rogers Arena on Sept. 29.
Tickets, ranging from $45 to $350, for the Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver shows go on sale Feb. 13, for the Quebec City show on Feb. 17, and for the Montreal show on Feb. 18. ====================================================
I thought she did a pretty good job at the Super Bowl until she took out the pom poms. She can try all she wants but she's just not going to fit in with any high school crowd these days ;D
I'm thinking of bringing Mrs. Dis to the Ottawa show, though. Have some pretty good triggers to some of her music.
Cheers.

I spent most of half time looking at my phone. Since Nipplegate, they've just been way too conservative with their shows. BEP was likely the most relevant act of recent memory - not mammary - and they were terrible. Petty was decent, but not overly relevant. Same with The Boss.
I'd like to see them really mix it up. Instead of some cliched musical number, how about a stand up comedian? Give me 15 minutes of laughs any day, instead of some lame gimmick.

True enough ;D Imagine that ... we'd probably have to redefine what it means to be a kid. Don't feel bad, man ... she's my age and she's still got just about everything the public is looking for; the voice, moves, looks, figure, the tight buns and panache. I won't empty the vault to see her but I'm thinking of surprising Mrs Dis. I'll let you know if and when I do order tickets. Cheers.

Went to April Wine and Deep Purple with Cigarviper and another buddy. Both bands were were excellent tonight!! It was great seeing so many people from the 70's enjoying themselves on music we grew up with. Average age of the crowd? Best guess; about 50-ish.
Would pay to see them again.
Next up, "Mamamia" in early July then "Boston" on 28 July in Belleville. I'm waffling over Steve Miller, which is the next night, same place.
Cheers.

Steve Miller is worth it. it's a concert not a show, but can the boy still play.
Mamma Mia? Not so. OK, over-the-top hype puts me off so I wasn't so thrilled to go in the first place and not a big ABBA fan in the second place, but was dragged along. it was OK. but then she who must be obeyed wanted to see it again. suffice it to say, I survived . . . but will not go a third time. enjoy it though -- it is an energetic play. now Les Miz . . . there's something that I could see over and over.
