Making trades ? Sure. We suck, change is needed. Not being outright sellers ? Fair enough if we're rebuilding/retooling (see Cammalleri trade). I'd have prefered all youth/picks, but retooling is OK. But not being "sellers" more than "buyers" when it's clear that the playoffs are a pipe dream ? That's not OK. I want Grigorenko. Retooling is ok but I'd rather not try to rebuild using underachievers like Bourque and Kaberle. Wasn't Pouliot last year enough of a cautionary tale? This is the year we should be going for Grigorenko. Sadly, I don't see Gauthier going in that direction. So that means more bad trades in the chase for eight place. I don't imagine PG will get rid of some UFA contracts until closer to the deadline if the playoffs are a huge stretch. After tonight, that stretch is a little farther. Sell intelligently. Stock up, pick well, develop well, win Cup. Not so hard.

Devils are in financial caca (not cap trouble but true financial trouble, NHL is on the virge of taking on the franchise...). So simply put they simply can't afford Kovalchuck who's set to make 11MM in salary next year. Habs are one of the very few team in the league that can afford such an albatros. I wouldn't be surprised one bit to see Ilya land here. Not one bit. Gomez and whatever for Kovalchuck. Do you do it? No I would not. Short term would be good, the long term consiquences would not justify it (we will be more upset than the Gomez fiasco) Subban shoud be untouchable along with Price, Gorges, Gallagher & Pacioretty. IMO the "Goat" is scouting or sniffing at the rosters of both teams and probably their farm teams. Maybe talks happened when (after) "Cammy" got traded and one team (NJ - Win) asked about other available players. Moen (UFA) & Gill (UFA) would be a nice additions to either team. Hopefully we can wait to the TDL (more buck for ou bang)

www.thefourthperiod.com/news/mtl120113.htmlReport indicates the Habs may try to sign Moen to an extension before the deadline. If not, they'll shop him. Link also says the Habs have interest in Col forward Derick Brassard. No thanks.

Scott Gomez, 1st + 2nd + 3rd round pick, 50 million dollars and Subban for: 1 sack of pucks, 2 water bottles and some poutine.

Good. I hope they've looked around at what we might be able to get for him, though. Well, we need to get creative. I'm all for getting guys with talent who haven't fit in elsewhere, in the hope that they work out here. We can't afford to only buy high (UFAs and trades for guys doing well), we need to buy low and develop players. Give Brassard (or Turris, or whoever else we make a reclamation project out of) a lot of ice time over 30 games with decent linemates, and see what gives. But we shouldn't be giving up much for these reclamation projects...

I wouldn't give more than a 5th for Brassard. He's five years into his pro career, and has accomplished nothing. If he couldn't do enough to get ice time with Nash, and succeed, how good can he be?
As for Moen, I thought about it on the drive home. I'd see what it would take to sign him to a two year deal (he'll be 30 in April). I'd also tell him that the club wants to move him to give him a shot for another cup, because it won't be here this year, but they really want him back for next season and beyond. IMO, he's worth a second rounder.
