For Kurtis Foster, Stephane Veilleux, Nick Palmieri, a 2nd rounder in 2012 and a conditional choice in 2013. Mostly that means a body to replace Zidlicky on the Wild backline, a big body up front who hasn't developed a scoring touch, and a 2nd rounder. That seems a fair bit to me for a 35 year old steady d-man, whose shelf life has to be nearing expiry. Is Zid going to be the difference make in Jersey?
Lamoriello's not an idiot, of course [well, I don't think so, but he hasn't been able to re-sign Parise yet], so he must know something about Zid that we don't.
If Parise is available this summer, that's a guy we should make a big run at. Gomez to the minors, AK not around and there's lots of money to sign Zach. He even has the right last name. And the best thing is that he will cost us nothing but money.

I agree that if Parise is unsigned as of Jul 1 you go hard at him, but I don't think he will be. The Devils are just quietly getting their ducks in a row.
As for the trade, imo it's a lot of so so pieces for an aging puck mover.

If I'm Parise, I'm looking at the team and saying, it's a decent team, but there's not much in the pipeline. Larsson is already one of their best defensemen and he's 19. Brodeur is not far from retirement is on the downslope and the chances of winning a cup are probably worse in Jersey than they are in Montreal. The Habs have a young core and several talented prospects coming on scene in the next couple of years. The addition of Parise would make their offense a lot better. I'd be more interested in signing with another team than with NJ.

There's no doubt that NJ has question marks. Loyalty and liking where you are can trump that. I believe the plan is to re-sign him. I think they're just sorting out where the money is going to come from. IE: is Brodeur coming back? They've got a lengthy list of UFA players, so there will be turn over. One is Cam Janssen. He'd be a fine addition as well.
