That's the rub. You have to determine as best you can if Nash in Montreal > the package you send the other way. In my mind Grigorenko = Malkin I wouldn't give that away for Nash. I've been hoping, praying wishing, for a big smooth skilled offensive center for over a decade... I think we have to look at things in terms of probabilities... #3 overall would have 15% chance of being Malkin 25% chance of being Pierre Turgeon 20% chance of being Radek Bonk 20% chance of being Viktor Kozlov 20% chance of being a bust of some kind I think all trades involving picks have to be considered this way... I mean, we drafted Patrick Roy with a pick we got in a trade, but was that 3d rounder worth all that much beforehand ? Of course not. We just got lucky.

When I watched Grig, I saw Kozlov.

I know I'd only move the pick to get a young guy with perhaps a tad less upside but who's clearly an NHLer.
A guy like Duchene in Colorado or Jordan Staal definitely fits the bill.... the real upside is that with Staal or Duchene as well as Subban, Price and Pacioretty, we have a decent core for the next 5 years or so, and a decent GM should be able to rebuild around those pieces.
With Plekanec, Gorges, Cole, Emelin, Eller, Markov and Gionta in addition to the core 4 above, you have the makings of a decent team right away, and a really strong one in 2 or 3 years or so if the right moves are made, and a few kids develop properly.
What I definitely don't want to see though, is the pick traded for a guy like Eric Staal or Ryan Getzlaf - 3 years older, all-around more accomplished, we wouldn't be getting a guy for potential, we'd be paying the highest price in dollars and in assets for a guy, rather than getting an "older prospect" type who can grow with the team.

I have the same sentiments as you, Paul. A Duchene (ideally) or a Jordan Staal, but not a 28 or 29 year old guy who's body parts are starting to wear out.

To get a Staal, I think you'd have to part with Pleks as part of the package.

Not sure about that.... if they could afford to pay Plek, they could afford to pay Staal, and I think they'd rather keep him. I think it would take something like the 3d pick and Eller to land Staal, maybe a 2nd rounder to boot, if we want to have talked and negotiated a long contract beforehand.

I'll rephrase it then. If they want to deal Staal, they're taking Pleks. I want to see where Eller goes - in a Habs uni. I still think he's a bigger Pleks. To that end, I think you have to keep him. DD, Staal, and Eller.
Carolina is slated to pick 8th overall.
Staal and the #8 for Plekanec and the #3. We get 4 years younger, bigger, and a Cup ring. Staal is still in his prime. We get the 8th pick which could be used to draft another defender, or try and use it to move up a bit. Carolina gets the #3, in a prime spot to pick Staal's replacement - Grigorenko or Galchenyuk. They also get a very serviceable two-way center. The offset in draft picks should, imo, offset the difference in value between Staal and Pleks.

Staal is 2 years younger than Plekanec, but at 27 is still in his prime. Plus you need to factor in the cap space. Staal is under contract for 4 years at an annual cap hit of $8.25m, while Pleks is also under contract for 4 years at a $5m cap hit. So it would be the #3 pick + Plekanec + $3.25m in annual cap space for the next 4 years in exchange for Staal + the #8 pick. I love Eric Staal. My concern with that deal is I'm not sure it moves the dial enough to offset the loss of Plekanec - Staal is a better player, but is he $3.25m a year better plus the cost to swap draft picks? Also doesn't solve the problem of secondary scoring, although Staal is a better finisher than Pleks.

Cap space is something to consider. If you can work it, get a second in 2013 for the space. We lose something on the PK with Plekanec's departure, but I think Eller slides in there pretty well.
We'd still need to land a winger of some repute, but then there's Gionta coming back too. So if no other scoring winger was added, it would look something like this:
Pacioretty-DD-Cole Bourque-Staal-Gionta
If you can find the wiggle room to add a legit scoring threat, you can move Bourque to the third line with Eller and hopefully Moen.

Anyone would be willing to take a second look at Tender? He's out of contract, can't ask for too much money, and would probably not bitch too much about playing on a third line this time around...

Minny wouldn't want to re-sign him?
Let's say they're willing to cut him loose....wouldn't coming back to Montreal be a "tail between the legs" kind of thing?

Gainey and Gauthier took their tails with them. I can't see Bergevin going for re-treads, though..... but let's wait to see who they select for head coach....

I think it's pretty much a gimme that Franky Bouillon will be picked up as a UFA
