Karlsson had a superstar year, but I'm not sure about giving him that kind of money after only ONE good season. Time will tell, but I don't have a good feeling about this deal.

Close to 6.5 per year is too much for a guy his age. If I was the league I would look to put into a cap on all the second contracts...ex: no more than 5 million per year or until you reach a certain age ie: 25 or 7 years in the league. It would be kind of like the NBA.

For example - You have a guy like Crosby after 3 years in the league he is 21 and the best player in the league. he deserves more than 5 million - IMO.

Karlsson also said he could have gotten more money. On Team1200 they played a clip and he sounded like he said he deserved more... very strange remarks.
It is a big risk, one great year gets you a 7 year contract at 6.5... if he flames out, there could be big trouble. Teams will really be keying on him now, this season will show what he has.

What I don't understand is what's the point of having the rights to a player for a number of years if you end up paying such player UFA type money for the years he has limited negotiation rights? What's the return for the Sens? They get two more years after he would have technically qualified for UFA status?
Not a terrible deal if Karlsson can keep up his offensive dominance but it still raises some questions to me...

It's the same reservation I had about the Doughty deal. Too much, too soon, after one good year.
It's easy to forget that his first year was NOT that good. He was a significant liability in his own end. He's better, but will never be a stalwart. Ottawa's success this year was something of a perfect storm. Especially for the first 40 games, everything went right. We'll see if they can maintain that.

When deals like this start piling up teams better hope like hell that they get at least one cup beacuse the window to win is shortened by all these big contracts. It's tough keeping teams together so you better plan your spending sprees at the right time.
