Watched a bit of the TSN stream on this and one of the first things they mentioned after how the Flyers benefited from the trade was how this impacted the Leafs.
One less goaltender for Burke to pursue.
Cheers.

Let him get hampered by that contract and the under performing player that comes with it.

We need to trade with the Blue Jackets more often. People say they will pass on a guy like Yakupov because they're afraid he's going to go back to Russia, and then they trade three picks for a goalie who will probably be back there in two years. I don't get it. Unless it's a huge plot to get the Leafs to trade up to #2 because they've now convinced Burke that they aren't afraid of Russians anymore. How does Holmgren keep stockpiling all these picks all the time??

Burke is a TSN magnet and the more he denies things, the more hype is generated. All about a failed GM and a failed franchise. Doesn't make for great TV. Cheers.

I would of though a 4th if that. Deals like this keep Philly competive for the last 15 years.

Deals like this keep Philly competive for the last 15 years. I think Holmgren is a pretty decent GM, no worries there, but when is he finally going to let his team gel? He's not on the same tangent as "Trader Phil" Esposito, okay, but I'm interested in seeing what his end product will be ... providing he can stop trading for a month or so ;D Still, that's a pretty good team he's amassed to this point. And, like you suggest, they should be competitive for quite a few years to come. Cheers.

Holgrom would be more than decent and the Flyers a true contender if the could ever grab a quality goaltender. I actually worry about that day!

Fortunately it doesn't appear to be happening anytime soon. Inexplicable, but there you have it. They'd rather put their money everywhere else and bitch about the goaltending every playoff. Thanks Paul. Or Ed.

Rumor going around was Howson turn down a unheard-of-mega-, deal for the 2nd overall pick.... to Isles 2nd overall and to the Blue jackets, the Islanders entire draft:4, 34, 65, 103, 125, 155 and 185.... if true Howson made a huge mistake www.bluejacketsxtra.com/content/blogs/puck-rakers/2012/06/isles-offered-all-their-picks.html

That can't be true. If it were, Howson is dumber than I thought.

If true, he should be fired immediately.

If the guy you're targeting can carry a franchise, then it's a no-brainer to spend that much. But the uncertainty on draft day is what makes it easy to be risk-averse.
Gotta wonder if Garth was targeting Gally or Murray, though.

When you've got the 4th overal, you've normally got just as good a chance at a franchise player as you do at #2. Throwing in the rest of your draft to move up two spots is bad asset management imo. The 4th pick overall, and 12 more picks should be better than #2.
