The Monster went first. The Schenn deal second. I'm tentatively giving Burke a win on the second deal. I think JVR is the better player, and definitely has a higher ceiling imo.

Wow.
And to think, I once expected JVR to be a Hab.... (I thought we'd get him for Price after Halak's playoff heroics...)

For Philly to get another D man, it might mean that Pronger might be done. I read that he is still suffering post concussion symptoms, headaches etc.
Schenn will have a better offense in front of him and he'll be playing with his brother.

Certainly helps both teams, though it must have been tough for Homlgren to part with JVR. This guy has all sorts of talent.
Schenn will do well in Philadelphia. His brother is already there and he'll fit right into that core of youth Holmgren has amassed.
Toronto has another American-born player. Wonder if and when Cherry starts harping on that.
The Leafs are better. The Flyers might be looking for insurance if Pronger is out, as WD suggests. Schenn will do fine.
Cheers.

I would have given Schenn more time. I think, though, that the fan base helped this deal along. Schenn is persona non grata in TO.

Schenn in the lineup....or Komisarek and JVR? I think the Laffs are worse off now.

Leafs win this trade. Schenn is at best 3-4 defenceman while JVR has the potential to be 1st line power forward.

Who does Van Riemsdyk play with? Leafs still don't have a centre other than Grabovski?

On the surface sounds like Leafs won this trade but I see Schenn play more than JVR. So, not necessary fair opinion. Maybe value of dman this summer higher than usual, and unites two brothers together gave Flyers more incentive. Generally Holmgren don't lose these kind of trades ie. Pronger, Carter, Richards.

Very good deal for the Leafs. They get a talented big guy that will score 25-35 a year and have the potential to even hit 40 one day against what really is a 5-6 D man.

I would have given Schenn more time. I think, though, that the fan base helped this deal along. Schenn is persona non grata in TO. And only 4 years ago, Schenn was their projected Calder winner and future perennial Norris candidate. 3 years ago, Pierre McGuire anointed him as part of "Toronto's Big 4", along with Kaberle, Komisarek, and Beauchemin. (Have I mentioned how relieved I am that McGuire isn't our GM? I put him, if not in the same boat, then certainly the same marina as Don Cherry.)I've watched parts of quite a few Leafs' games over the past several years....and my bet is that Ron Wilson ruined whatever confidence Schenn had. At his best, Schenn has reminded me of a Mark Howe-type. If he gets his mojo back, the Flyers win this deal.

This comparison, the Big 4 to Montreal's Big 3 of the 70's, told me exactly what McGuire's game was. There was never any comparison at all. The Big 4 simply didn't exist in the same galaxy. It was McGuire pandering to the TO market. The Big 4 story was just fuel for that. Can't believe he was on the list. I think Schenn will do well in Philadelphia. It'll be a completely different environment that what he's been used to. I'm interested in seeing how Gustavsson does also. Would be nice to see him excel outside of Toronto. Cheers.

Brian Burke got The Monster! He was the top goalie in the Swedish Elite League in 08-09...also playing very well for the national team that year in winning the bronze at the WCs. So it really did look good on Burke for going after him at that time, considering their goalie woes. A couple of heart procedures/setbacks didn't help, but Gustavsson has yet to live up to The Monster billing. A one-year wonder?

The Leaf fans I was talking to here at work this morning are more concerned about JVR's history of injuries. To them guy seems injury prone. And the one guy specifically didn't like the fact that Schenn was in the deal. Wonder what coach Carlyle thinks of that. Cheers.

Well the Leafs won't be getting Luongo.
Reports are that he declined to waive his no trade clause for a trade to the Leafs and Chicago. He will only accept a trade to the Panthers.
