Andy Griffith's passing prompted this thread. He was fortunate enough to star in two successful U.S. television series as different characters. There's also the other end of the spectrum....typecast forever. e.g. Gary Coleman = Arnold Jackson Diff'rent Strokes. Many use the Bob Denver = Gilligan example, but Denver starred as Maynard G. Krebs (sp?) in The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis before that. But he was typecast as Gilligan, no question. I'm not including same-character spinoffs (Kelsey Grammer)...only those who have starred in two or more TV series as different characters. I'm also not including sketch comedy shows like SCTV, SNL, Laugh-In, Fridays, In Living Color, etc., or game shows on which they hosted or appeared as themselves. With some, there's a huge gap between successes. Some went from prime-time drama to kids' comedy. Some went to motion pictures and came back to television (Sally Field). I'm using imdb to help my memory. Please add to the list.... 1. Tom Selleck. Magnum P.I.; Blue Bloods 2. Larry Hagman. I Dream of Jeannie; Dallas 3. Gavin McLeod. McHale's Navy; The Mary Tyler Moore Show; Love Boat4. Bill Cosby. I Spy; The Bill Cosby Show; The Cosby Show; Cosby5. Jerry Van Dyke. My Mother the Car; Coach. 6. Mary Tyler Moore. How long do these shows have to have existed for? About half of the West Wing cast was in Studio 60 on Sunset Strip. Aaron Sorkin has a particular talent for recycling the same actors for his series.
Matthew Perry was in Friends and Studio 60 as well (he also had a small role in 3-4 episodes of West Wing while he was still on Friends). Courtney Cox played in Friends, Dirt and now Cougar Town. Christa Miller is in Cougar Town and was formerly on the Drew Carey Show and then Scrubs. Rob Lowe was in West Wing and is now in Community. Doogie Howser (I forget his name, and perhaps one of the strongest typecasts ever) is on How I Met Your Mother. Omar Epps was on ER in the 90s before being on House.
Those are a few off the top of my head.

How long do these shows have to have existed for? As long as they've starred in the main cast of two or more successful series. There are a ton of actors who have guested on series....eg. Sally Field on ER. But I didn't count those. I had included Friends in Tom Selleck's case, but he appeared in only 10 episodes over a long span, so I took it out....even though I've read it recharged his career.

Alan Alda, M*A*S*H
I know he did a lot of other TV shows here and there, but I think he's forever typecasted as Hawkeye Pierce.
Cheers.

Agreed, Dis.
For one of Alda's co-stars, it was his third successful series being in the main cast.
Harry Morgan. December Bride/Pete and Gladys; Dragnet; M*A*S*H
Amazing career!
Pete and Gladys was a spinoff of December Bride, so I'm making that one series, as he was the same character--Pete Porter.
From Porter to Potter.

Let's make the cut-off point 26 episodes in the main cast credits. That's usually one full season, or two years at 13 eps each, and that's a solid run for an actor.
Denver Pyle. Tammy; The Doris Day Show; The Dukes of Hazzard --Fantastic character actor.
McLean Stevenson. The Doris Day Show; M*A*S*H; Hello Larry! --Even though the latter series bombed, it lasted over 26 eps...and he was the star.
Rose Marie. The Dick Van Dyke Show; The Doris Day Show --She'll be Sally Rogers forever...but 47 eps in The Doris Day Show after that.
Allan Melvin. The Phil Silvers Show; Archie Bunker's Place --An obscure one, but you know him. He also played Alice's boyfriend, Sam, on The Brady Bunch. Voiced a few cartoons as well.

James Garner: Maverick, The Rockford Files, 8 Simple Rules, other assorted short season series, plus all those movies.
Would you consider Clint Eastwood typecast? Dirty Harry = all those spaghetti westerns, no?
Roger Moore: Maverick, The Saint [= James Bond?]
Tony Randall: The Odd Couple, The Tony Randall Show, Love Sydney, other assorted nothingness
Jack Klugman: The Odd Couple, Quincey, You Again

I think my thread title is confusing.
I used the question mark to denote that these people have NOT been typecast forever...i.e. as the OP states, the actors listed have starred in two or more successful TV series as different characters. Later in the thread, I used 26 episodes as a benchmark for a successful series.
So, I've amended the title to make the intent clearer.
Sorry for the confusion.

Here's another one.
Garry Shandling. It's Garry Shandling's Show; The Larry Sanders Show

Yup, I got that CH, but when I was thinking westerns Clint Eastwood came to mind and I wondered if he really just plays one character in different eras. Same with Garner and Moore -- their Maverick roles [early Saturday afternoon fare while I was a younger buck with time to waste] slid very easily into their future roles -- while they were successful series as different characters, the characters were none-the-less quite similar.
Hagman, Bixby, and O'Connor were definitely different characters, probably Buddy Ebsen and a couple more that have been mentioned.

Alan Alda, M*A*S*H I know he did a lot of other TV shows here and there, but I think he's forever typecasted as Hawkeye Pierce. Cheers. I've been re-watching Season 6 of The West Wing this month, when Alan Alda is introduced as a Republican Senator running for President, and becomes a prominent character. He's also one of the 2 main characters in Season 7 along with Jimmy Smits, maybe another guy who belongs on this list -- L.A. Law, NYPD Blue, The West Wing. I never really watched M*A*S*H but Alda is fantastic in his WW role.

Yup, I got that CH, but when I was thinking westerns Clint Eastwood came to mind and I wondered if he really just plays one character in different eras. Eastwood doesn't fit the two-or-more TV series criteria....but I see what you mean. He attained worldwide attention on TV first, though....in Rawhide. Then came the "Man with no Name" and "Harry Callahan" movies. Yep, no doubt the tough, gruff character is his calling card....like you said: the same character in different eras. Some departures for him are: Play Misty For Me; The Bridges of Madison County; Space Cowboys Here he is making a cameo appearance in TV's Mister Ed, when Rawhide was his ticket...before his movie career took off. Go to 4:57 of the clip....which also features Donna Douglas before her "Elly May Clampett" role.
