While Havlat's agent Allan Walsh is shooting it down, there's some buzz about the Habs offering up Bourque and Diaz/Weber to SJ for Havlat.
Martin has a NMC, and three years left on a deal with a cap hit of $5 million. Fiscally, the deal makes sense. Production between Bourque and Havlat is not too dissimilar the last couple of years. Havlat is injury prone, but very talented.

Trading Bourque would make zero sense ... its a lateral move at best. What I'd like to see is a two forwards for one package type deal to make room for the youngsters.

I think the brain trust feels the youngsters won't be ready for this coming season. So unless someone surprises, the Berg has to boost that second line some other way. That may explain all the rumours about various trades. One thing the Ellis signing has done is remove some uncertainty about his contract, making it easier to keep him or trade him. I hope MG isn't too hasty as I'd like to see Eller in a few games this season before judging him expendable.

I don't see Eller as being trade bait, but anything is possible. As for Havlat, I'd be intrigued. Marty gives you the chance for more offense than Bourque. His bad full seasons are Rene's best. That's the rub though; Marty's health. The trade, as laid out, would address an issue beyond secondary scoring. We've got a glut of defenders who are clones of one another. Putting Weber/Diaz in helps.

www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=1929His injury updates are listed above. Last year was a lower body injury that cost him 39 games. He's missed long stretches with shoulder injuries during his career as well.

Apologies. Misread when I was looking at their pages on capgeek. It's easy to forget that Bourque is north of 30 though. We wouldn't get appreciably older in the deal.

Well, if we're giving up Weber or Diaz along with Bourque, we are getting older.
It's just a rumor, but it makes some sense. Similar contracts, SJ knows Bourque from his time in CGY, and with some of our UFA additions losing some size to add skill isn't entirely insane.
Though I dislike the idea of getting older. I'd hope we'd get some prospect or a 3d or 4th round pick along with Havlat.

I don't mind getting 9 mos older if we get better. Playing at their respective best, Havlat is the better player.

The man has talent, no denying that. Can he stay healthy, though?
He's put in some good seasons in the past few years, but he missed 39 games last year to a lower body injury. Anyone know what that was?
Cheers.

Tried to go over the boards and hurt himself? That was klutzy ;D

That would be a good deal IMO and gives you two solid scoring lines assuming he stays healthy but that can be said of Gio as well. Havlat can still be almost a point a game player.Weber and Diaz are mere depth players.

I wouldn't do it. I strongly believe that Bourque is bouncing back this season and Havlat is too pricey and too injury prone.
