As I cried myself to sleep, I thought about why Cole and why now.... Trade with a loser. Sabres, Rags and Caps have plenty of celery but are making a lousy salad. I wonder of the Rags want to dump one of their big contracts? Which of course means they take some back. Personally, I'm so impressed by the Gals, I wouldn't mind if we go on a twenty game losing streak and trade Markov, Gionta and Kaberle for picks. Two more 1st and a 2nd? Great. 9 picks in the first three rounds sounds like the building of a dynasty. Soooo......who do you like to see the Habs trade for and what are you willing to give up? Or only picks? (I'm going to send this link to MB. Yup, because we KNOW he needs our help!... )

I'm not sure I'd pull a deal off so quickly given the way the team has developed. I have no idea if they'll keep it up but this is possibly the best edition of the team we've seen in quite some time. But, still ... we're in first place and we're talking trades ... when was the last time we actually could do this? Cheers.

Bergevin been kind of unorthodox to what we have been use to seeing in NHL. But I expect a veteran to be added for the playoffs. Maybe move a Weber type for faceoff specialist, or big center. Likely a guy with expiring contract.
Bergevin seems to be big on asset management so by July 1st I expect Kaberle buy-out and Gionta traded. Likely Markov also, both are mid-30s and game will continue to fall off, but still would fetch additionals draft picks. He'll move declining assets to stack deep into the '13 draft.
See him signing a top free agent. He has to over pay to get top player to come here but doesn't have to give up any top assets to do it. So, it a way, spending no money on development and draft signing a good player, it is cheaper to overpay on July 1st. Somebody who is still in their prime, 28-29 like a Perry or Getzlaf. Or could take a big contract off a team who are near cap limits and want more options, or team in financial trouble looking to move a big name.

Hmmm, how about Gionta and a low pick for Clowe.

Gionta really has looked a step behind. Maybe it's just confidence, but you can bet the club is thinking about it. Lots of talk around the league right now regarding the big two UFAs-to-be in Anaheim. The Ducks are doing so well, can they afford the message it would send to trade either or both if unsigned at the deadline? Look what happened to New Jersey and Nashville. Parise and Suter bolted for home the first chance they got. Food for thought, Corey Perry's Ducks profile page indicates his favorite team growing up was the Habs.

A big piece of this is the health of Rene Bourque. If his concussion is bad enough that this is a long-term injury, then I think Bergevin needs to explore the trade market. I just hate taking Cole and Bourque out of the lineup and only replacing them with Ryder. That's just too much size/skill/physicality lost, IMO.
You want to give a 1st place team the best chance to contend. The best call-up we have is Leblanc, who actually plays a pretty solid game along the boards, so Bergy needs to weight the cost of getting someone in a trade vs. the best internal option.

I was referring to the trade deadline day . . . where in the [recent] past we traded a 2nd round pick for a minor piece [though I understand what you are saying].

Given the depth of this years draft, I don't think you'll see the club discard 2nd rounders for Dominic Moore types. I'm not saying they're locked away. I'm just saying it would have to be part of a trade that brought in considerable value.

Gionta has not been used effectively. He shouldn't be used 5 on 5 and he shouldn't be used on the power play. He is very effective in empty net situations and should be utilized only where he performs best. If any GM disagrees with my assessment I'll take a seventh round pick and a bag of pucks. Gionta is emerging from his cocoon as the new Gomez! (Slight exaggeration as Gomez was exceptional in his role and needs to elevate his game to match the two goals he produced last year)

trade Markov, Gionta and Kaberle for picks. Two more 1st and a 2nd? Great. Maybe Markov might get us a first rounder .... Gionta and Kaberle? If Gionta and Kaberle are as bad as most Habs fans say, then they wouldn't get us a 6th or 7th rounder. I'm all for trading Markov. This next month is going to be fun watching the trades, I have a feeling alot of team are going to have a different look to them trying to manouever for a Cup run and get under the cap.

I'm not quite so quick to trade Markov. Partly nostalgia and loyalty, partly plays like yesterday where he tipped the puck to Patches who missed the wide open net. I am totally convinced Patches didn't have a clue that puck was coming to him and he was surprised and too late on the shot. You have to be 99th percentile to make that play, or higher. Would be nice to have him for a playoff run. IF, however, he brings us a 1st rounder this year at 15 or better......I'd be tempted.
