Another 8-year deal. So ends all of the Perry-to-wherever stories.
Cheers.

www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=4185438 years, $69 million. It's an incredible amount of cap space to be taken up by two players. Both players are very good, but are they generational talents? They're not on the same level as a Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, imo. Cap goes down next year. I expect Koivu and Selanne to retire. Otherwise, they're taking enormous pay cuts. They've got a fair sum of money tied up on their blue line for 3 guys that aren't young. Souray, Beauchemin, and Allen take up more than $11.5 million a year in space. Sbisa and Fowler will be another $6.175 million. They've got $7.4 million committed to two goalies. Bobby Ryan is $5.1 million. 10 players = 47.05 million 6 players with contracts through next year (at least) = 7.6225 16 players = 54.6725 million. or 9.3275 million to sign 7 players. If they bring up a rookie making the EL max, cut that total remainder by a third. To my thinking, they're going to have a really hard time finding secondary offense. If you expect the cap to go back up after next year - and it likely will - it's one lean year I guess.

Ouch....
I like Perry and all, but I think there's a point where you have to just let a guy go, when his salary is going to be that high, for that long.
In 2021, Perry will be 36, I don't know if his style of play ages well, but really, I doubt at that point Anaheim will be glad they signed him.
Still, contracts like Richards and Carter signed in Philly seemed high but seem fine now, so I guess you never know.

Introducing Tampa Bay west. I guess the Ducks figure they know what they're doing.
Cheers.

Both Getzlaf and Perry have been playing extremely well in a contract year...and the Ducks are near the top of the league. Colour me surprised.
Now, let's see if their play tails off somewhat.

Career average of 32 goals/67pts per season = 8+millions I know Perry brings more to the table than his stats, but Holly Molly, that's a BIG contract for those numbers...

They must be looking at a Cup run this year. After this season the Selanne and Koivu contracts come off the books. That's $7.5 million combined. And if they want to free up some more cash they can shop Bobby Ryan and his $5.562 million contract.
Cheers.

For sure and more. ...my comment was more of a general reflexion on things... We can't compare right now... But Pacioretty already has a 33g/65pts season last year, is heading for similar stats per games this year (little less goals, little more points)... Of course Pax doesn't have the one big killer season that Perry had in 2010/2011, nor the hardware but 4.5 vs 8.3... Are these 2 players so far from each other in terms of on-ice contribution?

He'da got it somewhere else indeed ... but, you're right about Pacioretty ... if he doesn't warrant the same money then it probably has more to do with his lack of Hart. Cheers.

Once again, the argument that "longer contracts will allow teams to sign stars at lower annual cap hits and free up cap space for average players" takes a beating. An 8-year contract just allowed Perry to get maximum dollars for 8 years. That's why the owners wanted the limit to the 5-6 year range. Whatever. Perry and Getzlaf were somewhat unique in that there aren't that many 27-year old UFAs of their calibre.

In no other world but spurts do managers need handcuffs chained to the bedposts because they can't control themselves.
