While image has always mattered (even Harper needed work on/hired professionals for image) it can't be all sizzle and no steak. Trudeau won't last long if all he's got is his dad's legacy and charisma. I can think of little else responsible for his climb. He hasn't really had time/experience to influence/stand for policy, has he?
Will he be a sound, legit, strong leader...or the male version of Sarah Palin?
We shall soon see.

As I see it, he's got 3 years to develop his platform. Does anyone really know his stance on any of the hot button issues? I know I don't.
I'm not sure he's got his Dad's charisma. Pierre was a larger than life personality. Justin has always come across as a more reserved, and calculating, individual. He's not going to stand and give people the finger after all.
Popular opinion polls had him favored over Harper by 4 points even before he got the official nomination. I expect those numbers to rise in the short term. As he develops his platform, we'll see where the numbers go.

I know that their party is near oblivion and there has been some whispers of merging the liberal party with NDP; I am left wondering if they should have waited for one more election before selecting Trudeau. I think this is their last chance at turning it around and maybe are playing their best (in their eyes) card last. The guys has two + years left to prepare, and with Harper projected to step away I guess we shall see if the time is right.

I think merging with the NDP could be a mistake. I know, lead by Leighton (who I liked a lot), the NDP moved more to the center than ever before. But, they're still the truest option to the left for those interested. With Mulcair, it will be interesting to see how they do. He's rubbed some people the wrong way, and needs to work on his people skills.
As an aside, the entire strength of their opposition strength is based in the landslide in Quebec. The reason they got the votes is because of spite. Quebecers, many of whom likely were Block supporters, vote NDP because they didn't want to vote for the others. That brought in a huge influx of people who've never been in politics.
Having a French Canadian leader may well sway voters from Quebec to the Liberal party. The next election will be telling as far as the future of the NDP goes. I'm not convinced, and I think hitching your wagon to them could be a mistake.

fearless prediction for the 2015 election [2 years, blny]:
Conservative win -- even though Harper is hated by many, the other two split too many seats. Liberals the official opposition -- win Quebec and Atlantic seats plus a few in Ontario NDP in third -- lose Quebec seats to Liberals and the resurgent Bloc Bloc regains a bit of a voice Elizabeth May continues her lonely vigil.
young Mr. T. has no policies set as yet. he along with others in the Liberal party will stick the finger in the air [no, not that one] to see which way the wind is blowing come closer to the election. policy-making would be a big mistake for the Liberals right now -- what they need to do is take the good feeling [anti-Harper feeling] and fill the coffers . . . use the Trudeau name while they can.
policy isn't going to win the next election anyway -- charisma and character will.

[not sure that the Conservatives have anyone to lead anyway].

They don't need to make policy, but at some point BEFORE an election they have to at least pretend to inform people as to their goals. They may not spill it all, but they have to put together a plan of goals before it. Canada doesn't tend to blindly vote. We're not as partisan as our neighbours to the south. Sure, some vote a particular colour regardless of platform, but there are a greater number in this country - imo - that vote based on platform.
The people Trudeau surrounds himself with may indicate some of his leanings, but he is going to have to put together his own ideology and share it.
Hard to say how the Atlantic Provinces will vote. Newfoundland doesn't vote orange very often. Neither does New Brunswick. The NDP had a voice out east because of Alexa McDonough. That was enough for a number of key ridings in the urban areas of Nova Scotia at least. Given how unpopular Darrell Dexter is right now, there may be some trickle over disdain come 2015.
That said, given the other two options in NS, Dexter may just get back in.

Conservatives have already produced and are airing attack ads...which I think point more toward their insecurity at this point.
Certainly, he'll screw up enough over the next 2 years to provide relevant fodder for attack ads during the election, no?

It's sad they aired THE DAY he won the nomination. Clearly, the Tories had them made some time ago.

agree, CH . . . quite premature.
I'da just left him alone for a bit and let the NDP and the Liberals duke it out/split the left-of-centre vote.
I think that people are getting so tired of the Tories ads that they [the Tories] may be pushing them [the tired not-locked-in populace] away.

We'll see how left of center he is. Chretien, and to an even greater extent Martin, were hardly 'liberal'.

My favourite Marg Delahunty sketch was the one where she talked with Paul Martin ending with "but then again, you aren't a Liberal either, are you?"
I think that the Conservatives have staked out the centre-right vote -- infringing so much into the mushy centre-centre in fact that pretty soon we won't be able to tell the difference between the three parties other than by their leaders [and the Conservatives shrill voices].

My favourite Marg Delahunty sketch was the one where she talked with Paul Martin ending with "but then again, you aren't a Liberal either, are you?" Can you imagine someone trying to do that in the US? Yes, we're going to have an loud woman, dressed in a viking-esque "Flight of the Valkyries" outfit, accost prominent politicians as they leave the house and 'interview' them for a facetious news program. The Secret Service would shoot her lol.

Libs are going to spend a lot of time with beauty ads about their great leader and conservatives are going to spend on blunting this. If we criticize them as attack ads then we should also criticize brainless leadership ads.

Look around, folks. Can you name a Western leader who isn't tall or has some kind of physical attraction? Short, bland looking people have huge hills to climb in getting ahead in Their workplace or in politics. Sizzle sells, at least at first. In fact I think it's one of the worst Darwinian traits there is. We'd be a lot better off if brain power had some sort of attraction. How else does one explain folksy mental midgets like Reagan and Dubbya become president?
Trudeau has a pretty good chance in the next election as long as he can avoid the inevitable Harper traps. He's better looking than Harper and shows much more character. Policies Schmolicies. What kind of eye candy is he?

If we criticize them as attack ads then we should also criticize brainless leadership ads. I have to agree with Franko's projection of the federal political landscape. The Tories will more thank likely, retain the majority government, though smaller than it was. They see what Trudeau is doing and they understand that this could be a problem in the future. Trudeau is targeting the youth of our country big time. But, rather than focus on a similar strategy, the Tories are focusing on discrediting Trudeau. As BLNY points out, Canadians are giving some thought to their votes, or at least more thought they were giving a few years back. I think we might see a shift in power if and when those seeds take root. Not this next election, but certainly for the future. I found in the past that early use of the attack ads usually meant an election was in the near future. However, I don't think there's any reason for an election, though. The Tories are using these ads to destroy those seeds Trudeau is planting and I don't think it's the right strategy. In fact, I wonder if the Tories are out of touch with the youth. They should be focusing on that in another way; direct contact. Young people remember that more than a smear campaign. Me? I'll be voting Tory again. I can't see that changing. There are no Jack Layton's or Ed Broadbent's hanging around. Trudeau may be leader of the federal Liberals, but he doesn't have the leadership right now. No, right now he's more of a sheppard and his party actually needs that. Cheers.

Conservatives have already produced and are airing attack ads...which I think point more toward their insecurity at this point. Harper and his party see Trudeau as a possible future threat to Harper's office. And I think they're attack ads on Trudeau reflect that insecurity. There's potential with the new Liberal leader just on his name and they're trying to erase that. Harper has done his fair share of lying but he's been squeaky-clean of late. Voters may use their noggins a lot more than they did in the past (just sharing an opinion) but they have very short memories. The Tories know that too, I dare say. Cheers.

Tories are probably the smartest political party in the West. They are not going to let anyone define them and they intent to define everyone else. For attack ads to work, it has to have an element of truth and its a bonus if it hurts the opponents platform. I'm sure that Prince Sizzle will supply plenty.

BTW.....right now, I'm in Greece. The number one discussion here, by a light year or seven is politics. Invariably, I'm asked if I'm American, which is generic for US/Can/Aussie. I tell them I'm from Canada and I kid you not, the very next thing they say, without exception....YOU LIVE IN THE BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. I'll agree with them, thank them and say is that we have a great government, to which they respond that THEY wished they had a leader like Harper or Merkel. Not obami, not Hollande, not Cameron, but those two. By name. Those two are considered the two world leaders with serious gravitas. You cant believe how proud it makes me feel......and how desperately envious they feel.
On a flight with Lufthansa, sitting between German nationals, the conversation mirrored the one with the Greeks. Cripes, I almost want to break out I AM CANADIAN beer commercial when I hear that.
I don't want to change that because the left wants a flea weight Prince with nice hair to call their own.

The newest Readers' Digest includes a feature on him....and it's very much a celebrity-driven, youth move. For example, after public appearances, the organizers don't have to take down posters for the trash. Attendees take them down...to be autographed.
We're so easily led, aren't we?
I understand the easier "sell"....but it sure would be best for the country if he has the substance/ideas to go with it.
