The Twitterverse is saying that Geno could be made available this off season. He has a year left on his contract @ 7.5 so he's affordable.
If we were interested what would it take to land him?
One of the Gally's? Picks? Subban? some sort of combo?

This buzz was created by Dreger last night. He asked the question, 'if the Pens get eliminated in 4 or 5 games, do they trade Malkin?"
If this series is showing anything, it's that two of the best centers in the league isn't enough to beat a well rounded team. The Pens have what in reality are thoroughly average wingers who benefit from playing with Sid and Geno. They have past their prime Morrow and Iginla. They have a pilon in Murray and a forward playing defense in Letang. They have a goalie who consistently wilts in the playoffs and an old back up doing the best he can - which isn't good enough.
The only way I'd trade for Malkin is if he signed as part of the deal. Even then, it would cost a fortune. It would cost Galchenyuk for sure, Tinordi because they already have their rover in Letang and Orpik isn't getting any younger, and at a first.

Figures Dreger got the ball rolling....trying to get Leaf nation excited lol.
The cost is going to be high to land him, I would jump all over Galchenyuk, Tinordi and a 1st for him!!

All it'd do is help the Pens out like the Leafs helped the Bruins out. Or like the Habs helped the Rags out lo those many years ago.

I'd do Gallagher, Tinordi and a first. Or 2 firsts and Tinordi. He only has one year left on the contract and they aren't getting chucky.

Assuming that we can sign Malkin long term, my proposal for a talent like him would be Price + Eller or Pacciorety + 1st this year + 1st next year or the year after. They would probably want to get rid of Fleury and I'd be willing to take his contract for the one year he has left. So in the end, the deal could look like this:
Price Eller Pacciorety 1st (2013) 1st (2014 or 2015)
For
Malkin Fleury

We are giving them a signed long term goalie. To keep Malkin beyond next year, we'd have to pony up 8-9 million. That money and cap space is an asset.

It's fun to dream, but realistically, he isn't going anywhere.

I can't see the Penguins moving Malkin, but if they were to my money would be on him going to Colorado. Something like the 1st overall and Ryan O'Reilly for Malkin. Penguins would then be free to either take Crosby's Brother From Another Mother Mackinnon, or Jones the defenseman.
But like I said, I don't see it happening. And I really don't see us being involved.

Can't see Montreal making a deal here Well, if they traded Gretzky ... even given that, I still have a hard time visualizing how that deal with Montreal would go down. There's not a lot of high-end talent left in Hamilton, at least not with the forwards. That's going to change once last year's draft picks get there, but as it is now I just don't feel Montreal has too much Pittsburgh could use ... unless we're talking about the current lineup, and that work-in-progress would be stagnated if we moved anyone out. Cheers.

At the risk of sounding like Cherry, a player who takes $8 million hurts the team. Lecevalier was released for cap reasons, not production. Gallagher, Tinordi and a first have much less cap implications than Malkin will and will continue to do so for years to come. A hard working lunch pail team beats a collection of stars interspersed with AHLers.
