They trade Frattin and Scrivens and conditional 2nd for Bernier. link

A good deal for TO, I think. They haven't given up too much, and shore up an area of uncertainty, despite the Reimer fans out there. Bernier should turn into a solid NHL goaltender.

A back-up, fringe NHLer in Scrivens, an average young player and a 2nd rounder. Imo, not much to give away for a potential franchise goalie who was selected 11th overall in 2006.

I thought Frattin looked pretty good for the Leafs, like he might develop nicely. Scrivens is a pure back up. What are the conditions on the 2nd?

Great deal for LA, I think. Frattin was clutch for the Leafs this season. I'm not sad to see him leave the Division. And Bernier wasn't about to get his big shot with Quick being the man.
And hey...so much for Reimer's confidence. I guess that 4-goal Bruins' finish was too much....even though it was all Reimer in Games 5 and 6.
Leafs' fans will spin it into: "Now we've got 1A and 1B in goal."
Not so sure about that.
At least Nonis is addressing a problem....and wasn't scared to throw a promising young player into the mix.

Looks like TO also keeps 500K of the cap hit in this deal.
I think the fact that LA is a team in the middle of a Cup-winning window means that to them getting 2 cheap players and getting some extra cap room from TO means that they are thinking short-term (ie, keeping their current team together) rather than getting full long-term value. Also, the 2nd round pick is conditional in terms of years (2014 or 2015) but whether or not a pick is dealt doesn't appear to be in question.
In short, cap room is an asset: LA got a lot of it back in this deal.

Wonder if Gillis is kicking himself for not getting the Luongo deal done. Leafs seemed to be the only really interested team. Any perceived value on Gillis' part just took an even bigger hit.

I was sort of hoping that he'd land Luongo. It probably would have cost him a lot more and it would have possibly put holes in the core of their team. We'll never know, though. Bernier? Well, I thought the Leafs got the better on the deal. Kind of reminds me of Ottawa signing Damien Rhodes a while back. TO kept Felix Potvin and LA held onto Jonathan Quick. Rhodes did well. Cheers.

I thought NJ might be in on this or is Lamoriello just going to keep re-signing Brodeur until he has to be helped onto the ice. They desperately need to move forward in goal & LL ignores it - the same way he ignores his pending UFAs.

From an LA point of view i think its a good return for a goalie that was stuck behind Quick. Frattin i think will fit in nicely there...Scrivens is a serviceable backup goalie and a 2nd is always nice. TO gets the best asset in the deal and solidifies the goaltending. Never like seeing a rival improve their club.

Not sure what happens to Reimer. Is Bernier really any better? Save percentage is a wash. Goals against is close. Reimer has twice as many starts. Reimer has played for the lesser team, and didn't get to play against lesser teams like Bernier would have as back up. We'll see what Bernier does with the #1 spot, but he wouldn't be the first to reveal warts hidden as a back up getting to start one in ten games.

I thought the Isles would of made a better fit. Maybe they can rework those Luongo for Dipietro trade offer.
