On Hotstove last night they said Habs been calling around looking for d-man. But have put it on hold for now and go with young rookies. May look again later in year if rookis don't pan out.

Hotstove has a way of stating the obvious ....
What I fear is if we do manage to find a defenseman it will be at the expense of Tinordi. Bouillon is to the defense, as Desharnais is to the offense .... Screws everything up trying to fit them in.

Not sure how 'obvious' it is. It's something of a patchwork until Murray and Emelin are back. We'll be a lot different with them in. I'll reiterate that there were significant rumblings at the draft about Berg pursuing Edler. I read further rumours over the course of the Summer. It's hard to say what Berg might be most interested in getting.
Markov, Bouillon, Diaz and Emelin are all UFAs-to-be. Were it me, the only guaranteed returning player from that list would be Emelin. Diaz just isn't good enough offensively to make up for his lack of size, grit, and defensive zone inability. Bouillon is a warrior. It's hard not to like him based one what he's been able to accomplish. We need to be bigger and better on the back end though. To that end, it's time to say goodbye. Markov looks better playing with Subban. Who wouldn't? If Berg can pull off a deal for Edler, Markov becomes expendable.
Edler doesn't come cheap though. You're going to have to pay to get him. It would likely start with DD, Beaulieu and a high pick. I think the Canucks make sense as a trade partner. Kesler is always hurt, and after the Sedins there isn't a heck of a lot of offense. Edler gives the Habs a guy that can QB the powerplay. Can play anywhere in the top 4. Can take some pressure off Subban. He's not small either, at 6'3 and 215. Just entering his prime, he'd be a great fit and handle playing in the east well.
Subban-Gorges Edler-Emelin Tinordi-Pateryn Drewiske
That's not a small group, and they're all under 30.

I doubt very much you get Edler in any deal involving DD as a prime piece. I think you have to start with someone like Pleks. That's almost a straight up deal IMO, but d-men being a slightly scarcer commodity, there may have to be an additional piece. Beaulieu might be too much, but there are quite a few second tier guys who will very likely be NHL players who may fit the need. Guys like Dietz, Ellis, Thrower or Pateryn. Or maybe Louis Leblanc, to try and boost that weakness at centre that the Canucks have. One of these last 5 guys, plus Pleks, may be about right. And it would help both teams.
I'm also concerned about how effective Emelin will be on his return. Knee injuries play on the mind, so even if the knee is fully healed, Emelin may not work it as hard as he could, simply for fear of damaging it again. In time, those mental games play out, but it makes the recuperation process longer.

I tried to compensate for DD by offering up our best offensive D prospect. Canucks get some cap relief in the deal.
Emelin will have the second half of the season to try and show if he'll be his old self or not. The club will have to decide whether or not he's worth keeping. Emelin could also decide playing at home, tax free, is better.

Got that part about the combo of DD and Beaulieu, and I agree if replacing Edler was a key, including Beaulieu would be attractive to Vancouver. I think the Canucks are fixated on that centre spot as it's been an achilles heel the past two years with Kesler's injuries. They tried to address it with Derek Roy late last year, and that sort of worked out, but they couldn't afford to re-sign him. They really need someone with a different skill set than DD. They're looking for a #2 centre for the 3rd line who can easily move up if Kesler or Henrik are injured. DD is wanting on both counts, while Pleks fits that role to a T. Unless Desharnais picks up his game, he is untradeable.
