Fiddle sticks... you beat me to it. I'll cut and paste mine to your comments section:
To Winnipeg Jets: Peter Budaj and Patrick Holland (Acquired from calgary in Cammallerri trade if I'm not mistaken)
To Habs: Evander Kane(Just Kidding Eric Tangradi
Tangradi was placed on waivers last week, so in essence, we gave up Budaj AND Holland for a guy we could have picked up for nothing. Not to mention he'a another 4th line guy.
Salary dump?? Maybe just not wanting to take up a roster spot with a third goalie?
Discuss!

So we acquired a forward who plays very little, puts up almost no points for a back-up goaltender and another forward I know nothing about. Was this just to clear bodies?

Can't say I'm thrilled about the return, but then the goalie market is rarely a good one. If nothing else this moves gives the team some flexibility. Clears up more cap space, and gives you a player in Tangradi who has already cleared waivers so he can bounce up and down as needed. He can't kill penalties like Travis Moen, but he is a 4th line option if and when injuries hit those guys. Plus, if you put a lot of faith in advanced stats he's a rock star. Nice preview on Tangradi from a Jets site: jetsnation.ca/2014/8/8/player-preview-eric-tangradi

Mb likes cap space and although im not sure what tangradi's cap hit is looks like mb just added at least 1 mill to available cap space

I'll miss Peter for his professionalism, team attitude, humour and his soccer goalkeeping games with Brandon Prust. If only he was a slightly better goaltender, I'd love him. Not that Tokarski isn't just as scary. Granted, he's younger and cheaper. Sometimes, watching Toker, I think he has a guardian angel near his water bottle, keeping the puck out.
My prediction, not that's it's rocket science by any means? Tokarski is not going to stick with us. I think Condon and Fucale will both move by him on the prospect ladder. Nothing's really changed...let's keep our fingers crossed that Price stays injury free.

Pretty terrible return on a good goalie. I guess the market just wasn't there. Beats losing him for nothing.

I'm glad Marc found Peter a home. Played the role of backup perfectly. There was never a controversy when he was around, unlike the Hackett/Theodore Theodore/Huet, Halak/Price years. He knew he was number 2 and was happy to be just that. Excellent professional. Good luck in Winnipeg.

Good move for both teams.... Winnipeg gives up nothing to get a backup goalie who might push the starter, Habs give up a goalie they would have had to put on waivers (and possibly be stuck with on the cap to some extent, plus it always looks bad having NHL vets get waived..... the piece of the puzzle I'm curious about is Holland - I know he's prospect who'd slipped with many other kids moving ahead of him on the depth chart... but there must be a reason Winnipeg wanted him....

Goalie market really does suck. Tangradi is a 4th liner at this point. He bounced up and down with the Pens. It's hard to say things about the Jets because much of his time was spent under Noel, and they were a mess under him.
Cap space, and a player that can be moved freely up and down, is two different types of flexibility.

6'4", 221. Only 25 years old.
And he seems willing and able to take care of at least his own matters, if necessary. Not a heavyweight...but you can't have enough big, strong bodies.
He might even catch some Weise-itis.
Nice moves on the lower lines, MB...even if Tangradi is just an option/safeguard.

Budaj turned in some memorable games ( some strong performances in Boston come to mind) but last year, after the Olympics , I felt he did not play well in Price's absence. Not surprised the return is low.

Every team has 2 Budaj's but not every team has 1 Price.
He dealt cap space away and got another bigger body. Good for MB.

Tangradi isn't a great addition and Bergevin wouldn't be heartbroken if they lost him on waivers at any point. If the Habs hadn't unloaded Budaj while adding Tangradi they would have worsened their cap situation without improving the team. They would have lost Budaj (or Tokarski) on waivers anyway or else carried three goaltenders at the expense of being one forward short.

You answered your own question. It was a convenient way out of a ticklish situation. Budaj's morale was hurt by the mere presence of Tokarski and he wanted out. Besides, the trade wasn't just bodies but also salary.

I just surprised Bergeron could move a back up goalie making$1.8 mil who lost confidence of management....... We finally have a real gm!! Would be nice if Tangradi can turn his career around....last chance for a NHL career..... I think he's KHL bound next summer Holland progression stalled ..... Last season was his turn to shine as a Bulldog.......1st line minutes were up for grabs and he sputtered all season long... I remember when we traded for him I thought we found a big 2 way forward to play on a shutdown line....... He was listed as 6'2" when we acquired him but lost 2" somehow .....was he part of the bourque/Cammalleri trade?

I like this trade. We got rid of a goalie who outlived his usefulness. Kept the better goalie. Got rid of a career minor leaguer who looked timid in his only call-up last year. We didn't get much back but we got size who can bounce back between AHL and NHL all season. And we got the all important room on the roster and cap. To me, we didn't really lose anything of value. If Tangradi does anything for us this season, it's a bonus. He can bring experience and leadership to Hamilton.
Oh yeah, remember this move if Bergevin trades for something good at the deadline. That cap room will come in handy then. Let's just hope it isn't used to sign Bouillon.

There's nothing to dislike in this trade if you ask me. Budaj was the consummate professional with us and well liked by the organization and his teammates. He did everything that was asked of him, worked and practiced hard with us, and put up very respectable numbers. This was a very classy move by MB not to put him on waivers in respect for all he has given us.
Two, in the process MB gained cap space and flexibilty with the roster. Tangradi might not be a sexy return, but he does play with heart all the time, he is in no way a floater and gives 100 percent every shift. He may not put up a lot of numbers, may never even be a full time NHL'er, but he has character, can play the PK has size and speed, and will stand up for his teammates. He will be great for the bulldogs as well as depth insurance for the habs in case of injuries. MB is all about character and Tangradi certainly fits the mold.
As for the return itself, not sure what you'd expect to get in return for a back up with a 1.8m cap hit in a saturated weakened goaltender market where a hall of famer like Brodeur doesn't even get a sniff at a contract offer. The writing was on the wall in last post season, Tokarski was the guy we were going with.
This deal makes sense on many levels, both business, organizational and cap wise. But more importantly on a class level.
Well done MB, and good luck Peter, thanks for your efforts here in Montreal.

My impression of Budaj was that he was a good fill in for a game or two but if he to play more than that his effectiveness declined. Since he was a class guy Bergevin got him to Winnipeg where apparently they are looking for a solution in goal so he has better prospects of playing a lot more there. Tangradi looks like good insurance against injuries on the 4th line and has size & speed which are important. As for Tokarski as 17 said the Habs have two good looking prospects in the mill and when one of them is ready Bergevin might be able to trade Tokarski - if he does well- for some small return. Small incremental improvements are not to be sneezed at; in today's NHL where you maybe have 3 or 4 difference makers per team they often make the difference between being a contender and winning a championship and not. Cheers

Guess it will be Tokarski. I like trade. Saves a million in salary, clears a roster spot and gives a little depth for Hamilton. Can see the end coming for Moen though. He's 13 or 14th forward at this point. A role a Tangardi can play

Well it was a salary dump...plus we found a home for a good guy who Still can play, so better then sticking him in the AHL. We freed up $1.4 mil in cap space..... Plus we freed up a contract spot if we needed to add an extra body during the season....So that's three birds with one stone. Clever move
