Eller was -2 as well despite having a favorable even-strength Corsi rating of 64% (14 shot attemts for, 8 shot attempts allowed). He played better than his -2 suggests, although I'm sure that's all Therrien will see. Actually Therrien mentioned that he was satisfied with Eller and Bourque efforts tonight. I didn't hear that! Good to know.

I also keep seeing comments about Emelin putting himself in a vulnerable position, which is garbage. He'd just recognized a giant screw-up on his part and was trying to stop and go back the other way to help out Tinordi and Burrows hit him. Emelin was off balance because he was trying to recover from his faux-pas. The hit was late and I can't tell if Burrows meant to just finish his check, which is ok, or do worse. But it was a head shot (Burrows could have eased up and still taken Emelin out of the play) and it was definitely late. I'd say 2 games because he has a reputation and the refs don't like him. The really criminal officiating error was not calling the pick on Malhotra when you'd just called it on Gilbert. There's no Sedin goal if that gets called.
I'm still annoyed at Pleks for gambling deep. Geezes, it's OT, late in the penalty, on a 4 on 3, with your team good at the shoot out, and you gamble and allow a 3 on 2, with the Sedins. Really dumb.
GAlchy's getting even more confident (between the legs chip at Miller from behind the net) and I love that not all his goals are 'pretty'. He's going to dirty areas, getting deflections, winning battles and scoring. We have ourselves something special. Now if only Therrien would start using him more.
I also chuckled at Mitch Melnick's blog today. He gives MT a "good" for changing up the lines with 5 minutes to go and playing Galchenyuk more late in the game. Duh. We've been clamoring for both those things and yesterday it was at least at the mid point of the game, not waiting till there's 5 minutes to go and the game is desperate. I'd have given him a "bad" for taking so long to adjust. Cripes, its not rocket science. If a guy's having a good game, reward him with more ice time...and do it quickly.
I thought Brandon Prust had a really good game, but his name wasn't mentioned much. Tinordi, as stated above, was also good. I really enjoy seeing players bounce off him. Almost Chara like and it took Chara until he went to Boston to really show his stuff. As we've said, Big guys take longer to mature. Tinordi almost got his stick to the first goal on the return pass, but his lack of coordination held him up a split second. I'm still not sure how Daigneault has his dmen playing 2 on 1's. Can anyone enlighten me? I don't think it's working as we've given up more goals than I think we should on those.

...I kinda think they ran a good cop/bad cop routine on Eller...
Bad Therrien: puts Eller as a spare in practice
Good Bergevin: comes to speak to him after practice
...they put some heat under his butt and it worked.

The problem is, Doc, that Eller's not a criminal. They don't ship him off to jail after he 'confesses'. He's playing a role on this team and they have to try other methods than psychological waterboarding. Especially if you want long term results with him. I've not seen anything to indicate Eller has a low IQ. He's a reasonably smart guy. He may still be immature (some of his comments, while honest, can give opponents incentive), but he's not stupid. They should be able to talk to him and coach him in a normal way. If not, its not Eller's problem. It's a fact that Eller (and Bourque) both play against the tougher opponents and both start out in the defensive zone more often than any line except Malhotra's. the 4th line doesn't get a lot of ice time, so Eller and Bourque (am I really adding Rene to this?) face tougher circumstances than any other line. DD and Patches start way more than their share in teh offensive zone, which makes sense for your best scorers. But if they're not scoring we have a right to criticize their performance. If Eller and Bourque aren't scoring, there may be other reasons than talent. To balance thigns out, neither of those guys as played all that well in the offensive zone either and they should have more points. I don't know if you have to be a manipulative, scheming bastard to be an NHL head coach, but I sure wouldn't like having that kind of boss. It would not motivate me.

When a player gets suspended, the team still has to pay for the games missed by the suspended player, the money goes into the players emergency assistance fund. I was not aware of that.

Exhibit A for either a Coach's Challenge or automatic review called down by a video official.
Instead of being down 1-0 (and perhaps gaining 0 points), we should've been on a 5:00 major, and a great chance at 2 pts (our PP notwithstanding).
This league is beyond stubborn in this regard. There is no such thing as infallibility. Accept that fact...and let's focus on fairness and getting it right!
Much more respect (and less complaining) comes from that approach. Just look at the NFL and MLB.

Something had to be done. If starting play in your own zone when you’re a bottom 6 player throws your game off, than something’s wrong because that’s what you’ll get. My own opinion is Eller tends to see himself as a player he is not. He wants to be the guy who can carry the puck, hold on to it and do fancy stuff that works… He said it himself last summer, he wants to be a top 6 player… But what he is, as Bergevin put it, is a physical player with some talent… People might feel DD has it easier, but his burden is to make his line produce offensively. His line is a combined +20 right now. Best on the team. Last year DD had a horrible start, line wasn’t working and yes Therrien eventually put him in the press box. It’s about Role. Knowing what yours is, accepting it, and wanting to be the best at it. That said, the best 3rd line center on this team, the only one who can make the best out of playing with duds and get 20gs/40pts out of it while being close to perfect defensively is... Plekanec... ...So trying Eller on the RW of the DD line or on the LW of a Galchenyuk line could be a way for Eller to make his way into the top6.

A lot of posters upset with Habs play against Van. I thought it was their best game of the trip and if not for dreadful reffing, they're getting a W.
Two goals were a direct result of the refs. Instead of 1-0 Canucks we should have been on a 5 min pp. The non call on the picks in OT led to the winner. And the first star of the game was Ryan Miller. So even with the bad calls the Canucks had to rely on their goalie to pull put a win at home in OT after being up 2-0.
We've got a lot of talent on this team which seems to be sufficient to get points even if we're not quite on. But if we get on then look out. I'm not waiting for MT to figure out the combos as that ain't ring to happen. The players will work it out on their own through skill and determination.
Still can't figure out why Sekac isn't playing?

Why do people expect immediate results from Eller on a third line after a benching? And why does Eller get benched prior to the 10th game (I believe he was benched early last season too , game 4 or 5 ) .... Not quite the same treatment if you ask me.

But you take away the TB blowout and all of a sudden the GF GA differential is not that different then other top teams. Add a PP that's working and we're dominating. I'd much rather have a team that can comeback in games and never quits then a team that has a good goal differential.

Listening to the Vancouver media they are completely sold on the Habs being one of the elite teams. They are measuring the Canucks on how they play against the Habs and the 3 California teams. And many are saying the Canucks/Habs game was the most entertaining game they've seen in the last few years. Habs are bringing fire wagon hockey with their skill and speed! Maybe because of the drought, many Habs fans are in denial or afraid to have high expectations. But the facts speak for themselves. Made it to the semis last year. Off to a great start. And be any measure the best young players on any roster: Price, Subban, Max, and the Gals. All of whom have yet to reach their prime. We could be scary good! May not happen this year but it will only be injuries to key players that will prevent us from hoisting a Cup in the next 3 years.

Bournival is a two way player who is going to be absolutely key to our success in years to come. I really see him as a Carbonneau type player because he has the smarts and enough offensive skill. Moen and Bourque are also keeping Sekac from developing as well. I really liked what I saw from him early on. He has really good defensive awareness, not something you expect in such a young player, and then he has good speed and hands and he's not shy of making a body check either. We just can't keep those two kids in the freezer for much longer. Especially when you consider the contribution Bourque and Moen have made. I give Moen a bit of a pass because he's done a great job on the PK and we don't expect a lot of offense from him. A goal here and there would be nice, though, but at least he protects his teammates. Im trying not to be too critical of Bourque, but that's proving difficult. From him we expect more offense. Even a goal or two that bounces in off his butt. It's not happening though. Sure hope we can move one or both of them soon. That should give a good boost to the team's balance and deadliness not to mention more CAP space. Galchy's development and PK's further maturing will make the biggest differences, though. Price is already there. Nice to think Vancouver's media has us in that top group of teams, but I think we have to prove it still. That stinker against Tampa didn't help and we'll have to succeed against the top Western teams before I start greasing the float wheels.

It's still early in the season so elite team might be pushing it a little, imo. I think they still rely far too much on Price and the special teams are not all that special. In my mind, they are still one scoring winger and a top 4 defenseman away from reaching that status. Now, if only Bourque could wake up and play like he did last playoff...

Elite? Near elite? Somewhat elite? A hint of elite with a side of mash potatoes?
Can someone please point at a 60 minute game where we looked elite?
Our PP is at 26th.
Leading after the 1st. 0
Leading after the 2nd. 3
Trailing after the 1st. 4
Trailing after the 2nd. 3
Score 1st and win. 2
The ONLY shinning statistic is that we won 6 times after trailing the 1st.
This is so anomalous that either we are beyond elite and we want to play fair by giving the other team a chance.....or an above average team that is very lucky.
I'm happy.....very happy we are 8-3....but not impressed, even a bit concerned.

Move Bourque and Moen and replace with Sekac and Bournival. Now MB would have to pick up a top RW to take Gallaghers spot on the #1 line. As for Defense, I don't expect much there, I think MB and MT are hoping that, in Gilberts 2 yrs, Tinner or Beaulieu fill that spot. I can live with that. As for the RW spot, million dollar questions: - Who is it that's on the market ou would want as a goal scoring threat?
- Who are you willing to give up for said player (you can involve a combination of Bourque/Moen or draft picks acquired from said playersbeing traded)?
- Will having acquired this player make it hard for MB to iron out decent contract for BG, AG, JT and NB (given they are still part of the team after the trade)?
Keep in mind, every bad thing we say about Moen, Boiurque and Eller are the same things pro scouts see in them. Although, MB has a weird way of swinging trades that favor the #habs (Brière for P.A. Parenteau AND a draft pick)

I'd be very surprised if we get any return for the present roster if we trade Moen and/or Bourque. They will ultimately be salary dumps (which I'm certain will improve our team) which might fetch a late draft selection.

My only contention is, that while not asking you to grease the float wheels, for you to say we earned an undeserved point in the Vancouver game was unwarranted. I can appreciate we all hold our team to a higher standard than others, especially being hab fans, the bar has been set high. I just think we can sometimes let this cloud our judgment and our expectations and or reactions are sometimes unreasonable. All part of being a fan I suppose.

My own opinion is Eller tends to see himself as a player he is not. He wants to be the guy who can carry the puck, hold on to it and do fancy stuff that works… He said it himself last summer, he wants to be a top 6 player… But what he is, as Bergevin put it, is a physical player with some talent… I think that sums it up. If Eller has success will depend on if he keeps on trying to be a top-6 forward and playing as such, and probably failing most of the time, or if he can accept a different role and fill it well. Being a reliable 3d liner can be a terrific career, but being a bad 2nd liner means that you can get passed by very quickly. In short, Eller is this teams Jan Bulis - a guy who needs to be a 3d liner and needs to stop trying to be the star, 'cause he just hasn't got what it takes to fill that role.

I always wonder why people think that Lars Eller isn't top 6 material, and assume he should just know his role. Usually those that hold this opinion, are trying to justify David Deharnais' position on the team. Is David Desharnais top six material? He has played almost his entire 268 game career on the top 2 lines and has managed 51 goals and 169 points. Lars Eller has played the vast majority of his 297 game career on the third line and has 46 goals and 105 points. Lars is 3 yrs younger than Desharnais, as well. I sometimes wonder if people are afraid to put Lars with better wingers because then Desharnais has no spot on the team. When given decent wingers Eller has always produced, and produced well ... They invariably always move those wingers off his line to get another Center going (last year) and expect Lars to keep on ticking.
Between Desharnais and Eller, I'd take Eller

Lars can handle being put with sub-par line mates, I don't think DD can. DD is top 6 or bust.
