Bruins will make the playoffs, barring a complete meltdown. Not only is Chara out, but so is Krejci. If they started today, the Bruins would be a wildcard team. I expect them to bounce back.

You'd think so, blny. I would be surprised if they didn't make the playoffs, but it's not a slam dunk anymore. I was never sold on Rask being an elite goalie and I'm still not. Chara, well, this could be the first of several injuries. He is older, and his luck has been pretty good in the past few years...so maybe time for the pendulum to swing back? I just wouldn't be shocked, is all.

Hard to believe this is Julien's 8th season in Boston. With Trotz having been fired from the Preds, this has to make Clod one of the longest serving coaches currently.

At this point, would anyone put money on the Bruins making the playoffs? are you kidding? this isn't the leafs. this is a team with their big man out and the rest of them playing like crap. and a GM who isn't afraid to make a move. and a coach who isn't afraid to mix lines up that aren't working. they'll be in the mix, for sure. Being in the mix doesn't mean I would put money on it. Their flaws far exceeds them missing Chara. Their currant climb in the satnding was done without him, they had a horrible beginning of the season and their defense is very suspect. Victims of the Cap. Chara: Injured Boychuck: Traded Ryder: gone Seguin: Traded Iginla: Gone Horton: Gone Ferrence: gone Thomas: Gone Granted Iginla only played one season, but that is 30 Goals they have not replaced. These aren't the same Bruins that terrorized the leaugue. Claude Julien is doing his best with the players he has, but he hardly has a top line anymore. No top D pairing. Their hopes were on Rask and he's having an average year so far. Chiarreli has to do something or their team is a Bubble team at best

Here, Lucic showed poise. Nice legal hit on Sekac, drew a penalty, taking MTL star defensman off the ice as well. funny, Knuckles said basically the same thing. that even if Lucy had wanted to go, he didn't have an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other, he had Nealy in one ear and Chiarelli in the other saying "don't you do it". and for once he controlled himself. but the coffee is still good, Reap. Yes, the coffee was delicious. So was the ironing www.youtube.com/watch?v=npn0dyhSyr0

But funny thing happened on the way to the Forum (now Bell Centre), they ran into their nemesis. And that was it. In my view their window is now closed. Iginla gone, Chara old and injured, Reilly not playing over his head... Ironically, they almost didn't win the cup in 2011 again because of their nemesis but somehow flaked out a very close series. If i was a B's fan I would despise the Habs as we've ruined so many parties. Never gets old for me!

If I reviewed the Bruins recent history, I'm not so sure I'd be very complimentary of Chiarelli. Most of the pieces were in place when he took over in May 2006. That was an outstanding draft for Boston with Kessel, Lucic and Marchand in the first 3 rounds. I seriously doubt Chiarelli had much to do with that since he would just have come on board and most of the work would have been done by then. Since 2006, Boston's drafting has probably been lower than average, when they were picking in 'normal' spots. The other key happening in Chiarelli's time would have been the Kessel trade. It's still one sided in Boston's favour, but less so than before and frankly, Chiarelli was really helped along by a totally unforeseen horrible year that gave TO the 2nd overall pick (Seguin) in 2010. Let's say the Leafs drafted instead from 5th to 15th. The guys picked in those spots were: Neiderreiter, Connolly, Skinner, Burmistrov, Granlund, Dylan McIlrath, Jack Campbell, Cam Fowler, Brandon Gormley, Jaden Schwartz and Derek Forbort. Vlad Tarasenko was at #16, but really, when you look at those names, there's a few decent players in there, but no one with the trade value or potential of Tyler Seguin, certainly not at the time he was traded to Dallas. Hamilton should not have dropped to #8 the following year either, so it seems to me that Chiarelli's greatest attribute is some old fashioned luck combined with a foolish trading partner in Toronto. The Rask/Raycroft trade was another bad one for TO. Chiarelli's first round picks from 07 on, excluding Hamilton and Seguin, have been: Zach Hamill, Joe Colborne, and Jordan Caron. Too new to really rate are Malcolm Subban and dAvid Pastrnak, though Pastrnak is scoring reasonably well at the AHL level for an 18 year old.
All of Boston's success has come from the players on the team from 06 and back. Chara, and Bergeron being the key guys. The trend has been down for the Bruins and there's no reason to think that won't continue. Not only has Chiarelli's asset management not been great, he's put the Bruins in CAP trouble and gave up a number of draft choices for short term help, so they haven't had as many picks as other teams. You can really see the difference when Chara is out of the line-up. I hope the Bruins keep Chiarelli on for a long time.

As I recall the fans and the media were calling for Chiarelli's head the Spring they won the Cup. Had we beat them in our 7 game series (lost all 4 games by one goal, 3 in OT - without Max) Chiarelli would have been fired. It also helped to catch lightning in a bottle with an AHL veteran in goal who won the Conn Smyth and has never played that well in his life, And Chiarelli then signed him to a ridiculous contract. But now Chiarreli's a legend for bringing the Cup after 40 years to Beantown. All about luck.
