Delightful vintage photographs! For the first time since the 1980s the Islanders have to be taken very seriously. We were making fun of them for their bizarre trade with the Sabres but they seem to be enjoying the last laugh.

Those hockey cards are awesome Rick. What a find! I just had a flashback to my youth. The All Star cards definately have a '70's Disco' feel to them

Did he skate so fast that the wind eventually took it away? He wasn't called Le Démon Blond for nothing. (Note: as you can see from my profile picture, he didn't have much hair as a pee wee player).

And to think we could've had Mike Bossy. Claude Ruel really pushed Pollock to select him…but the rest of the scouts thought Bossy was too soft. I read somewhere that Ruel said Bossy was the first player he'd seen since Lafleur who brought people out of their seats. So we picked Mark Napier at #10, who was a solid player…..but nothing like Bossy would turn out to be. Toronto bypassed Bossy twice by selecting Marlie boys John Anderson and Trevor Johansen at #11 and #12 respectively. 1977 Entry Draft

I've tried finding the reference but I can't ... Napier and Keith Acton were eventually traded to Minnesota for Bobby Smith ... Serge Savard recognized the need for a big no.1 centre and he traded just about all of our offence to bring Smith in ... Cheers.

Great move by Serge!
You need a true stud #1 C and Bobby Smith gave us that. He could also be quite ornery. He fought his own battles and instigated his share, IIRC.
Look at Galchenyuk already since he's received the nod….and he won't be 21 until this coming February.
And one has to admire DD…performing very well in his new assignment. Not playing against the opposition's #1 checkers opens up room for his vision/playmaking. Best use of the personnel we have.

And to think we could've had Mike Bossy. A rare miss by Sam Pollock. Bossy was probably the best pure sniper I ever saw. Check his goal totals from 1977-78 to 1986-87: 53, 69, 51, 68, 64, 60, 51, 58, 61. That's 9 STRAIGHT YEARS with AT LEAST 50 goals. Guy Lafleur never did that, Wayne Gretzky never did that, Mario Lemieux never did that. Unbelievable. I'm happy to see the Islanders relevant again and those hockey cards posted by Dis are amazing. I have vivid memories of their first Cup in 1980. It was a Saturday afternoon game. My buddies and I waited in line for hours at Place du Canada movie theatre to see "The Empire Strikes Back" and then went back to watch Bob Nystrom score the OT winner.

Wow can you imagine if we had grabbed Bossy? The ridiculousness of riches this team has had over the years is mindboggling when you think about it. Should have picked Savard as well over Wickenheiser, if we had both these guys we could have competed for more cups in the 80's, instead of just the two in 86' and 89' respectively. Both these guys would have looked great in "la sainte flanelle", especially Savard. (in his prime) He was such a wizard with his skating and hands, so fun to watch. I still have a bad taste in my mouth losing to Calgary on home ice in 89'. Sigh, C'est la vie.

Ya the Savard pick was a huge miss would have replaced Lemaire in a big way as the Flowers centre and would have guaranteed he stayed a Habs for life and probably another cup opportunity ....Savard was an instant star on his own imagine the Flower on his wing....sigh of greed

The Isles, like the Leafs, have always given us trouble.
Little worried about Tavares going Stamkos on us...which is more of a commentary about our D.
With last change, Tavares will be seeing a lot of our weakest links.

Gonna be a long night....I think.
1-0
Andrighetto didn't finish his check on Tavares....and a 2-on-1 developed.
Tavares to Okposo for the open net.
Shots are 11-0 Isles over 12:00 in.
Absolutely no excuse for that.

shots 11-0, and the Islanders just scored.
Lousy opening periods continue.

Andrghetto was very lazy on that play. Emelin might get the blame for a pick , but if Andrighetto actually takes the body and not fish for the puck, that never happens

I recall Bobby Smith as a tough customer when he had to be. And he didn't avoid the tough areas, either.

The two on one occurred because Andrighetto did not take check Tavares along the boards, but simply put his stick out and with his head down zigged around Emelin instead of zagging.
