Canada now ahead of Slovakia 5-0. Nothing for Fucale to do. What I'm finding impressive about this years team is their offense, and their ability to play at a high pace and take away space and time. We'll see if they can do that against the better teams, but they're doing it now without a contribution from McDavid. Domi, Fabbri, Vertanen.and a lot of others are making a difference. Their defense looks much better this year.
Reway is one of the few Slovaks who can play at that pace but he'son his own.

8-0 final, Fucale gets a hometown shutout in front of family. Very dominating performance, even though McDavid and Lazar were quiet. The speed and skill of this team will be hard to contain. Reway gets player of the game in a losing cause.
DLR had a nice goal in the big Swedish win today. Lehkonen was part of Finland's best line in a 2-1 SO loss to the Americans.

Cheers.

Reway with two helpers in a 2-1 upset over Finland.
Canada getting jammed up hard by a tenacious German team. The lads have forgotten their work boots tonight and getting caught with international reffing. 2-0 good guys after two, but outshot 10-6 in the second rather surprisingly.

This was Germany's first game and between Canada taking them lightly and unrested legs, we didn't have the same jump as yesterday. Germany worked very hard and we didn't have yesterday's pace to create more chances.

Interesting dilemma for Coach Benoit Groulx: who do you anoint as your number one goalie. Including the last pre tourney game, Canada has three straight shutouts, but neither goalie has been overly tested in those games. Fucale has the edge on international experience, but Comrie has been really good this year. Right now, I think Comrie is a little better technical goalie. Zachary sometimes over slides and needs to improve the glove hand a bit. Both are coachable, but this is a short tourney and eventually you have to go with one guy until he falters or wins you gold. Nic Petan with another three point night. Watched a lot of Portland games and he is always involved. He is very small though, so interesting to see how his game translates when he turns pro. Good to see McDavid and Lazar get on the scoreboard, now TSN will need new material tomorrow. DLR's three points vs Denmark yesterday. m.youtube.com/watch?v=-yUHvxQNwI0

There's some criticism of Groulx's choice for tomorrow, by Arpon Basu and Jack Todd. They think you choose a guy by now and go with him. In other words, they've picked Fucale because he had a good game yesterday. Personally, I agree with Groulx. Fucale had a good game, but not a great game. I also think they like Comrie's calmness and cool (as I do). In fact, I think they're hoping Comrie has a really good game, so they can go with him the rest of the way without any pushback from anyone. Again, I agree. There's something about Fucale that doesn't comfort me. Perhaps it's that calmness that Comrie has and Fucale hasn't (yet). Should be a good game. Early start tomorrow, 5 Eastern, 2 Pacific, so the kids can go out and get hammered later for New Year's .

Canada's game today is one hour earlier: 4 Eastern, 1 Pacific, and 2 Mountain for us folks. Brett Lernout is here tonight too against the Oil Kings, wonder if Mrs NWT is up for back to back hockey for New Year's Eve...hmmm, probably not.

5-3 final for Canada. Some let up at the end to give the Americans chances to get back into it. Reinhart is so smart. Killed the US hopes at the end, twice.
I'm of two minds with the win. I almost prefer Canada losing, to give them incentive for the next time they play, since the US will certainly be pumped against us if we meet up again. Despite that, we had more good scoring chances than the US and I still don't think we're at our best. McDavid had one assist, but he hasn't been the game breaker he can be. Maybe he's still getting there after the injury. If he does crank it up one more notch, this WJC is over.
Demko had to be very good to keep the goals down, so can he do it twice? In any case, the US is playing with fire since if Russia loses to the Czechs, they would play the US and Russia is a Jekyll and Hyde team. It's not out of the question for them to play like crap when it doesn't matter and then turn it on for when it does matter. They could be playing possum today.
Weird, hearing the "Domi" chants before the stars of the game were announced. Who'd a thunk it? A Domi chant in Montreal? Phoenix has themselves a good one, though. Great chemistry with Reinhart. He has a sense of humour, that boy. Doing the Captain Morgan thing for the bench glove tapping after his goal was entertaining.
I don't think the goalie issue has been resolved yet. Comrie looked really good up until the 3rd and then his positioning on the Larkin goal with a minute to go, wasn't good and he let in a shot that should never go in from that angle. Poor Groulx.

I think that Larkin snipe was pretty stellar. Comrie might have been down a tad early, but we shouldn't take away from that shot. That corner was properly picked.
I have faith in Fucale. He's been through as much as any goalie his age can be. He'll rely more on athleticism than the bigger goalies who use angles. I think that smaller goalie moving around thing, like all goalies used to, gets misinterpreted as nerves. I don't think Comrie is anymore relaxed in net than Zach.

I've seen Fucale listed as tall as 6'2". Which is dubious, but also he's usually shown as taller than Comrie. Sure doesn't look as big. He has a narrower stance, makes him look smaller.

The first star...the Captain Morgan move.
Czechs just beat Russia, making this win far bigger. Who knows which Russian team will show up, but the Americans can't help but think a bit of déjà vue on this match up.
Comrie or Fucale? Groulx has a tough choice. We are in a better place than the last few years though.

Re Fucale, I've never seen him as taller than MacKinnon. 6' tops imo.

Midway through the first and Russia leads US 1-0. That's not a good start for the US. You don't want to give the European opposition some kind of life, such as an early lead. It gives them more added impetus than it does to a North American team.

2-0 Russia now. US hearts must be fluttering at this point, even with 44 minutes left in the game.

Fifth PP for Russia in the first period. Larkin gets a marginal one for trying to jump over a defender in the blue paint and catching the goalie in the process. No wonder the Russians are up. U.S. kill it. Still 2-0, one minute left in first.
From the highlights of the penalties in the first, the US is just being undisciplined. Two high sticking penalties especially, were foolish. If they can tone it down, they can still win this game.

3-1 for Russia now with 14 minutes left in regulation. Russia just killed off about 90 seconds of five on three. The US couldn't get any shots through and the puck was skipping a lot, which usually means your hands are too tight and not letting the puck settle softly. That was a huge opportunity for the US. A one goal difference feels a lot better for them with time winding down, but they couldn't get it there....yet.

Yeah...Russia survived all that....then the U.S. scored on a harmless-looking wrister from well out.
3-2 with about 10:00 to go.
U.S. is outshooting Russia 15-2 so far in the third.
Now Russia gets called for a "Don Cherry 1979".

3-2 final for Russia. Wow. Eichel, Hannifan, Matthews and that whole slew of very good forwards and the US doesn't get past the quarterfinals. I've always felt a key part of a coach's job was getting their teams up for games, but to the point of relaxed alertness and not much beyond that. Being relaxed enough in key games and key situations is so important as was proved again by a US team that was simply too high for the game. Too much adrenaline or testosterone or whatever. You're not at your best when you're that keyed up. That 'high' led the US to too many penalties and three PP goals against. Simple as that.

Agree....the winning goal was scored on Russia's 8th PP....and I can't say that any of the calls were chintzy. The U.S. had their chance, though. After the Americans scored their second goal....Russia got called for too-many-men. Before play resumed, the Russian coach got up on the boards and walked in front of his team. The camera didn't pick him up saying/doing anything demonstratively, but it must've meant something. That's a rare thing for a coach to do.

Sweden-Finland.
Under a minute left in the second period, 3-3.
Finland gets a high-sticking call.
On the ensuing faceoff, Finnish defender Honka gets his helmet knocked off and stays on the ice because the puck stayed in the zone and he didn't want to desert his post down low. Ref has no choice but to call it. What a weird rule. You have to leave the ice immediately after losing your lid.
Finland down 2 men for 1:49 to start the third.
EDIT: Sweden goes ahead 4-3 on the PP.
Finland with a 4:00 PP with about 11:30 to go.
EDIT: The Finns get only 2 SOG in the 4:00.
EDIT: Insurance and an empty-netter. 6-3. Swedes will face the Russians in one semi-final.
