Leafs down 5-1 late in the third in Winnipeg.
Time for Carlyle to be the scapegoat?

If Gallagher does what Sutter just did....i.e. snowing Price....he'd have been called for it....even though it wasn't intentional.

This has been a great road game by Montreal. I think one of their most complete games this year.

As dominate a game as we've seen all season....one of those games you can look back on come playoff time and know you can play with the top teams in the East. Long way to go but this latest run has them top of the conference and no one can say they don't deserve it....now imagine if they had a PP???
what a Christmas week

We all on the Emelin bandwagon again? He needed a good game if anyone did.

Glad the Habs didn't go into their holiday swoon as they always seem to do around this time.

I don't get chance to watch many games lately, but where it was Pitt went out of my way to watch this game. Impressed! This may be the game team matures into cup contender from good team. I thought last season the Ottawa comeback in final three minutes really changed that team. This game was impressive also. Pens are top team, dominating them them on back-to-back games says a lot. Canadiens sound defensively. Gonchar seems to done wonders for Beaulieu. For Beaulieu is playing with confidence, positioned well, different guy than I seen in November. Not first time I've seen young d-man benefit like this. The old guys learns them the finer points of the game. I've read a lot of books by ex-NHLers. A high number of them credit developing into the defenseman they did being paired with seasoned veterans. Robinson credits Noel Price, Langway from Senator, Bourque from Park, Chelios from Robinson. A part of player development that has been lost in recent decades, good to see it being used again. Subban better player than he was in first 2 months. Dominate force out there. Gallagher real smart player, does little things...motivates his team, block shots, energy player. As I watch the Habs now it occurs to me major part of team improvements are not done thru trades or head coaching changes. Things that fans, and often other teams are quick to suggest/do. But instead thru defensive pairings, line matchups, adding specialty coaching. Getting the most out of talent we have. Not only was Beaulieu major improvement but thought Eller had real strong game tonight. Diffent guy than I seen early in season, when he was with Bourque and Prust. Help keep Malkin and Crosby quiet. Bournival also, way better player, all over ice tonight, appears better as 3rd liner. Price much better positoned under Waite, most of his over sliding going side to side been erased.Tokarski numbers are solid also, he appears to be starting caliber but likely never get chance here. Another was DD,who had good game, robbed of goal in 3rd period. Different guy than early in year when he was listless back then. He is better away from Patches. Even Galchenyuk move to center seems to give team another dimension. He made some dumb moves but is explosive at times.
On Pitt side, thought Sutter played well, what a trade that was for them. Sutter and a high first pick and dumped too big a contract in what I think was over rated player in Staal. Perron looked good, had a few scoring chances. He will score a bunch for Pitt. Can see it coming. Fleury seemed to be playing better this year, made a couple big saves to keep team close.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think he's a top 4 our anything, but for a guy who was supposed to be a power-play specialist only he seems to have taken on a much larger role. I think he's been playing better than Emelin, to be honest with you, and if he has a calming influence on Beaulieu then all the better. As for Subban, I think he is quietly having the best year of his career. Statistically I believe he is on pace for that anyways, while averaging the highest minutes per game of his career, in all game situations. He is a legitimate #1 defenseman, no doubt about it. Even if he doesn't look as flashy as he has in the past. I think we need another real top 4 guy though for a solid Cup run. Emelin and Gilbert were supposed to be those guys, but I don't have much confidence in either one of them. Beaulieu might be one by playoff time, but I would still rather have another one. A really good veteran guy to eat up some minutes. That and maybe a top 6 winger and I like our chances against anyone.

Well, to be honest, right now Gonchar is top-4: to me our second pairing is Beaulieu and Gonchar, which says a lot about Emelin and Gilbert, who were supposed to round out the top 4. The fact it took us till the midpoint to have a stable 2nd pairing is surprising, since it means we should be better in the second half, when really in my mind we're far ahead of expectations. I was surprised at how many points Subban has put up, honestly. I think his game is under more control, and being paired with Markov forces him to think the game more, since he's not automatically "the guy" to carry the puck, make passes or take risks, on his pairing. I'm wondering who'd be more useful: a top-4, or a winger for the 2nd line ? I'm unhappy with Desharnais and Parenteau there, too little grit for the playoffs (I'm assuming Prust and Sekac stick on the 3d line).
