Year 1: 1st - Hall Year 2: 1st - Nugent-Hopkins Year 3: 1st - Yakupov Year 4: 7th - Nurse Year 5: 3rd - Draisaitl Year 6: 1st - McDavid Ridiculous. The problem isn't talent, it's a lack of leadership and it starts at the top ... MacT knows the business a lot more than I do, but the Oilers are missing character (unless they play us) ... we talked about this before but guys like Gionta and Gorges would have helped them out, I'm sure ... at least they'd have some options for captain other than Brad Ferrence ... imagine what Boychuk could have done for their blue line corps ... Cheers.

Agreed dis. The oilers haven't drafted poorly in the early picks. It's later picks, the lack of character, and leadership. None of us can say whether there's accountability within the locker room. It may be a country club, it may not. What we can see is that there's consistently been a lack of veteran leadership. Gio and Gorges would have helped. They need guys who've won. Guys who'll take charge, lead, mentor, and teach. They need to surround and support that very young nucleus of considerable talent. On that front, they've failed dramatically.

The leadership is an issue, no doubt. I think they over estimated the talent of their young guys. Dubnyk took a lot of heat for their lack of success. If I remember correctly, someone in management threw him under the bus. He was hung out to dry constantly, and put up pretty good stats for how the team played in front of him, until he imploded. Gives a clue to the mindset of the people in charge. They play favourites and don't really see what's going on.
It's talent too though. The picks after the no-brainers have been awful. They pay too much for filler types and then guys like Petry are let go. He's one of the few non-first rounders that actually turned out.

Just to clarify….I'm not saying the players they selected with their top picks are ridiculous….I'm saying that the system that allows such a thing to happen is ridiculous.
FOUR 1st overall picks and a 3rd overall in 6 years SHOULD NOT be permitted.
