Bob McKenzie tweeted that Buffalo is OUT on Babcock. Aaron Ward tweets that Babcock will not return to Detroit. He might just end up with the Leafs…. San Jose or St. Louis maybe? Interesting times. Darren Dreger tweeted a little while ago that both the Sabres and Leafs were were in a bidding war over over Mike Babcock ... for all I know the Leafs are doing what they did with Brian Burke ... just name your price, kind of thing ... dunno ... Detroit's final offer is 5 years @ $4 million per ... I can't repost the tweet ... I'm unable to access Twitter here at the office ... Cheers.

he'd be silly to turn that down PIC OF MR. SILLY Ha! Right franko! Not so silly if he's going to get more than $5 million per season. And it appears he either will….or get a longer term elsewhere. I can see the Leafs upping both the money and term. EDIT: Dreger tweeted that Babcock said NO to the Blues two days ago. Looks more and more like Toronto. And aren't the Leafs still looking for a GM? Both hats? Can you imagine the hype coming out of Leaf Nation?

Just heard a Detroit fan call in to TSN690.
Paraphrased:
It's getting to the point where Babcock will not only be over-paid….but also over-rated in terms of that money.
Sure he won a Cup in Detroit….but Sutter has won 2 Cups….and Quenneville has won 2. So, he's not alone there.
RE: Team Canada. Pat Quinn won a gold with Canada's best, too.
================================
Leave it to the Leafs to go nuts and break the bank. It's not against the cap….so why not?
================================
Pierre Lebrun tweeted that San Jose is OUT.
That leaves only the Leafs, no?
Unless Bergevin is sitting deep in the weeds, I'd say Babcock is Toronto-bound.

Howard Berger tweeted that a Detroit radio station said the Leafs have offered Babcock $8 million.
Ha!
Howard Berger @berger_BYTES Detroit radio station is reporting #Leafs have offered Babcock $8 million a year! MLSE can afford it. But, wowser.

But, wowser.If that's true & he goes there than I call BS on all his talk about wanting to win. He's just going to the highest bidder, no matter how bad they are. The Leafs are so desparate that they will go as high as that for a coach?? Pathetic. Even their fans must think it's crazy.

Leafs have to overpay for everything, players, management, now coaches. Just because you can afford to pay doesn't mean you should.....I wonder what the other team owners are thinking about this.

About a month ago I laughed when I heard Bill Watters say that the only way Toronto lands him is with a 10 year deal. That's nuts I thought at the time.

Yeah and to a guy that's 6 years & counting from the Cup. Other owners are probably royally PO'd. When coaches that have actually won something recently come looking for 6 million + they will be cursing Shanahan. MLSE never learns, doesn't matter what the sport is.

Making more than all of his players except for Kessel ($10 million) and Phaneuf ($8 million). Do I smell a Bab's Burgers concession at the ACC? Perhaps get H. Jon Benjamin to voice some promo? He came for the money….end of story. Once in a lifetime opportunity….can't say as I blame him. $50 million guaranteed….plus whatever endorsements he gets. And he'll get them in Leaf land.

Just heard Toronto is also talking with Guy Boucher….assistant coach? But that would be up to Babcock, no?
Maybe that was also part of the deal.
Let the hype ramp up to an unbelievable level.
I feel a tinge of compassion for Tim Murray in Buffalo.

He went for the $$$$ ......and the extra 2 months vacations... That was hilarious!!! Not a bad grab for the Leafs but shouldn't a GM make that decision..... And even before you go out and pay top dollar for a GM, how about stealing a good proven amateur scout or two. I mean they got no one in their prospect pool lol I think drafting is the biggest key to a great franchise they obviously got the cash to do it

Just heard on Sportsnet that the Sabres are livid ... they were convinced they had landed Mike Babcock and expected to announce his signing via press conference on Monday ... guess $50 million makes that kind of moot now ... they'll have to improve on their drafting ... they really don't have a lot of talent in the system ... I suspect they'll have to give Babcock total control not only of the parent club, but their AHL affiliate, too ... he won't coach there, but I think he might have an idea how he wants it run ... Detroit's AHL affiliate, Grand Rapids, plays the exact-same system as the Red Wings ... I also heard on the way home (TSN690) that he'll have a say in who comes in as GM ... as an aside, I wonder if Dion Phaneuf and/or Phil Kessel are looking over their shoulders right now ...
Cheers.

Leafs definitely swoop in at the last minute with a yacht load of cash. Absurd sum; $6.25 million a year. That's a million more than the talking heads more or less expected based on the Detroit offer.

Deal is front loaded.
Babcock went to the Shanahan/Hull school of negotiating. Bid up the suitors till you get what you want from the team you really want.

More control than Burke. The coach picks the GM? I mean "yes man" in this case. I heard Dreger say today that Babcock has a huge ego. Good fit. It's not as if Mike Ilitch doesn't have the money. Detroit doesn't think he's worth that much…obviously. Their offer was $20 million over 5 years, right? They were still willing to double his salary. But the Leafs more than tripled it. And if the Leafs get rid of Kessel and Phaneuf….that would make the coach the highest paid person on the bench. Only in Toronto. Let's not forget that when Babcock won the Cup in Detroit, he had Datsyuk and Zetterberg in their primes….as well as Lidstrom anchoring the D.

According to TSN part of the negotiation was that Babcock was guaranteed he wouldn't get canned part way through the deal. He's prepared to ride out 3-4 years of tanking. He wanted assurances that he wouldn't get dumped, and be a lame duck coach.
TSN also saying that part of the decision was based on wanting to be the man behind the bench when the Leafs win another cup. Buffalo and Edmonton are a lot closer to that. So, he bilks 3-4 years of losing and getting $8 million a year to do it.
I think Rogers customers can expect a price hike soon ...

Yahoo SportsAlmost half his contract in the first 3 years @ $8 million per. A couple of other interesting lines from the article: And what a day for Babcock, who has more confidence (and ego) than a human being should be able to possess.The notion that Babcock would attract free agents, in players and management, to Toronto who otherwise wouldn’t flock there isn’t outlandish.Here we go...
