Some of that lack of PK success was a result of the debacle that was game 2, but it did drop. I think that can be addressed by having a competent top 4 defenders that includes Petry. That allows you to take some of the harder minutes away from Subban and especially Markov. Keeps them fresher longer.

In game two, two of those goals game in the final minute of the 1st & 2nd periods. Last night, it came with just over a minute to go in the second. It's hugely deflating to give up those late goals.

Post Mortem: We need goals. DEFENSE can't win if you only score 1 goal in the majority of your playoff games. We're more competitive in playoff games and aren't pushed around as much. This is good. We're still lacking the grit needed to take the pucks to the net. This is bad. Get rid of our smaller forwards. I still believe we need to get rid of either Desharnais or Plekanec. After watching the series, if I had to choose, I'd say Plekanec is the one to go. I found his play soft at times with key giveaways that led directly to goals against. He only has a year left on his deal so Bergevin has some thinking to do. He's 32, still a useful player. Does he extend him or move him?

As much as it would have been fun, going down 3-0 was just a death knell for the season. And frankly speaking, we didn't really deserve to be down 3-0, but that's the way the puck bounces sometimes. But you knew we weren't going to outplay them EVERY game, as they're still a pretty good team, and last night they showed it. That was just a stiffling, insanely effective "Guy Boucher" trap that they threw up out there last night. They made no mistakes, aside from perhaps letting Dale Weise of all people get a break-away. Other than that though, they were almost flawless. A great game for Tampa, and full credit should be given to them. They were the better team last night, not because I thought we played bad (though some players certainly did), but because they were just the better team. When you're down 3-0 all you have to do is be the better team one more time, and last night was that night. Kudos to them.

Listened to a comment by Therrien on the way into work ... he said the team was physically and mentally exhausted last night ... they sure looked it ... perfect game plan by Tampa ...
Cheers.

Was listening to Habs breakfast on the way into work ... the guy I was listening to (sorry, don't know their names) suggested that Plekanec, Desharnais and Eller are all 3rd-line centres ... he said he'd have taken Joe Thornton in a flash ... not sure who I'd target, but I'm not so sure we've had a bonafide no.1 centre since Vinny Damphousse left ... and we keep talking about it again and again, and ... Cheers.

Tampa locked it down when they got the lead and we just had no life.
I thought the sequence late in the 2nd was almost poetic. We get a PP to try and cut the lead to 2-1 and looked miserable. Then Tampa gets a PP and scores like 5 seconds into it on some pretty puck movement. 3-0, game over, series over.
The PP was a real problem in the regular season and it killed us in the playoffs.

Fittingly, that excuse is just as feeble. Halfway through the playoffs….and that's what he pulls out? Up until the 55-minute mark we had something like 17 shots on Bishop. That was a regular-season passenger game for too many of our players. And there is NO EXCUSE for that. You could see the team deflate after Kucherov scored to make it 1-0.

I'd actually give some credit to Tampa, buds ... they played a perfect game last night ... right from the opening faceoff they were a step faster and they were hitting everything ... that equated to momentum that lasted throughout the game ... our defence corps were continually chasing the puck and the Tampa forwards were relentless ... now, don't get me wrong, Tampa won the series and they played a great game last night, but I really have a hard time believing they were the better team in the series ... no way, man ... no way ... Cheers.

Of course Tampa gets credit.
I do think they're better overall. They have more natural finish. No question in my mind. They play a style of game I'd love to see the Habs play.
We threw a defensive shell at them--the only option Therrien seems to have--and it worked for a while.

To me the team looked like it just ran out of gas. They gave everything they had the last two games and ran the tank empty. It was an embarrassing way to end the series!!

There were two days rest between Games 5 and 6. No excuse to be out of gas halfway through the playoffs. How about this quote from Therrien after Game 5…. "I see a team really excited, I see a team full of energy," coach Michel Therrien said Monday. "I think the excitement brings that energy to our team. I feel a team that can't wait to play tomorrow."And now….it's "we were mentally and physically drained"…… ?

We threw a defensive shell at them--the only option Therrien seems to have--and it worked for a while. Ever since Franko told me he could pick up TSN690 around this area, I've been trying to tune it when I can (depends where car is at any given time) ... they did a rundown on how Steve Yzerman built Tampa ... there was a reason he built two Olympic winners and he took that expertise to Tampa ... they're a great mix of draft picks, FA signings and trade(s) (Bishop) ... it's not an excuse, but this is only one of the hockey men Marc Bergevin is competing with ... as for the game, Jim Hughson said last night that the Tampa game plan was a defensive gem ... it that was their system throughout the series, then it was hugely successful in two games ... last night they clogged up the neutral zone and they were relentless on the forecheck ... I honestly don't know what system Michel Therrien used (I'm not always accurate when I try to identify the system in a game) but if his system was defensive in nature, then it was a pretty successful one despite losing series ... with the exception of two games, the Habs pretty much dictated the play ... and they did ... as for running out of gas, well, I wasn't on the ice ... if they were exhausted it's because they gave their all ... no shame in that ... there's work to do and I'm hoping Bergevin has either the dance partners for a trade, or he drafts a gem, or both ... and, yes, my expectations for next year include a Cup ... some may say that's not realistic, but that's the goal now that organization is competing for it again ... Cheers.

Hey Dis...they looked like they were using a left wing trap until Tampa scored. After that, I'm not sure what they were doing....kinda looked like a dump and chase but they weren't very successful implementing that system.

Thanks Reap ... honestly, I wouldn't know what to look for in something like that ... I think the TB played the neutral zone trap (was it 1-3-1) to perfection ... that and Stamkos decides to lead from the front for the first time in the series ... Cheers.

Dis...The left wing trap is just when the right winger and center create the forecheck while the left winger plays a more responsible role. When the opposition start breaking out of their zone, the Left winger joins the defencemen while the Center and Right Winger remain in the upper defensive zone.

Not quite that there were passengers, but that in order to win in the playoffs, everyone has to give it everything and that didn't happen in last night's game. True, though he may wish to take that back. No doubt it was emotion speaking.

I heard Subban's quote, and part of it said, "you have to give it all you've got, physically….you can't afford to have passengers…", but he didn't follow it by actually saying they had too many passengers.
But it could definitely be inferred.

We landed up where we should be. A one and a half dimension team that did not have the scoring to be a cup contender. Period.
Without Price, we were nothing special and would of fought for 8th place. With Price, we fought through most games with one goal wins and losses.
Maybe next year...or the year after that....or after that....or....

Not sure it was quite along the lines of Crosby saying once upon a time, "It was time for a change," when the coach got canned, but perhaps not the best thing to say after a loss.

Put this here, Beaulieu was not concussed from the Karlsson hit according to release from team. It was a fractured sternum and the visor was just a ploy.

IIRC, The media thought the team was hiding the fact it was a concussion by not saying he had a concussion so as to avoid the protocol. They let the media believe he was concussed instead of exposing his injury. Very smart of the team to do this. They protected their player upon his return to action.
