That would make sense if, for example, it was in exchange for Sharp. We get a better scorer, Chicago get $1MM Cap relief. Is that about right dollar wise?

I figure that if there's any truth to all this, it's probably signed and sealed, but the NHL really frowns on trades and other action during the playoffs. They want the attention on the 4 remaining teams.
They must be ticked at the Babcock announcement, though in fairness coaches are in the process of moving around so it would come out regardless.

FWIW, Stubbs follows him/her/them. That further legitimizes them as something of a source. Could it be the team he's going to is still in the playoffs? Perhaps the leak comes from Montreal, but there's a 'gag order' because the receiving team is in the playoffs? Why would any team still in the playoffs risk their current Cup run by even discussing trading a player on their current roster? Can you imagine what that would do to the player and the room. I would be absolutely flabbergasted if the team is still in the race. But to be frank, I would be astonished if there was any truth to this story. Then again maybe Pleks is being traded for Sekac

Could just be somebody taking an educated guess and hoping to look good doing it. It's pretty clear that eventually something is going to have to be done with the center position, and with Plekanec having only one year left on his contract, and coming off a(nother?) bad playoff, and him representing the "old guard" in this the transition year, AND the fact that he's still productive... It's not a bad bet to make, that he is being shopped, or has been shopped. Having said that, if I'm not mistaken Plekanec has a no trade clause, so he'd have to be consulted on any final destination. And there is no way that he has been consulted yet, so there is no way the trade has been finalized. It would almost certainly be leaked by others by now if Plekanec has agreed to a trade. He'd tell his friends on the team, his wife, his parents, his kids' school, his real estate agent... and they'd tell two friends... and they'd tell two friends...

You'd think this story would be tops on Marinaro's show.
Hasn't even mentioned it today. (Perhaps he did yesterday.)
Top story was the Ducks-Hawks series. And that it's clear the Habs simply aren't in that class. "Perhaps everyone who said the Habs were mainly a goalie team were correct…."
Then John Tortorella saying that Babcock's deal was great for all coaches. He thinks coaches are disrespected in the league, as they work their a$$es off and are the first ones to blame….Marinaro agrees.
Now the Montreal Impact. Marinaro's a huge soccer fan, so that's understandable.
Still listening for this Pleks' rumour….
Next story. Breaking news: Montreal Alouette's sign Michael Sam. 2-year contract.

Plekanec and a first for Kessel with the Leafs taking a million or two per year in salary? Would you do that?

Would I do it if we had a coach that would let the boys 'run' a bit? I'd be a heck of a lot more inclined to do so. Phil isn't certainly not without baggage, but he can score. His contract goes to 2022 at $8 million per. If the Laffs ate $2 million each of the first 3 years, and half a million each of the last 4 I'd do that.

Kessel is 4 years younger and scores a heck of a lot more goals. But.....Plekanec is far and away the better all around player. You give up a guy that can play in all situations (offensive, defensive, PP & PK) for a one-dimensional player that can light it up. My only concern would be motivation - can you make Kessel a bit more responsible? Or can you put him on a line with Patches and rely on Patches' defensive strength to cover up for Kessel? At the end of the day I think I would do this deal. Bit of a risk, but then again Pleky isn't getting any younger. We gain 4 years. Need to lose some of Kessel's cap hit, I think, but could be an interesting proposition.

Is there any way the Kessel deal happens, and we're also able to keep Petry? We also have to qualify Galchenyuk. Seems like to would be difficult to manage with the cap. Still, it's nice to ponder...

I think you only have to worry about next year...After that, Parenteau comes off the books, so it is 5 + 4.5 in year 2. If you withhold 2 million the first year, it is 6 million vs 5 million. Again not too bad of a trade off. I look at it like the Vanek trade. You aren't bringing in the guy to play defence, but to improve the offence. Historically he has done that, and isn't too bad in the playoffs. High risk/High reward.

If the cap is set at $68 million, no. If it is set at $71.5 million, that gives Berg almost $13 million to play with. If Toronto eats a million a year, there's $12 million left. Hope to land Petry for $5 million a year. Qualify Beau and Galch to secure them. Sign Galch to the same deal Gallagher got, and you're down to $3.25 million. Wait a year to sign Beau to a big extension. Qualifying him likely brings you down to $2 million in space. Let Flynn walk. Sign Mitchell. You're almost maxed out, but if you buy out PAP you give yourself $2.6 million in space.

If there's any way to curb the reported attitude, Kessel would pay immediate dividends with the Habs.
Still have to find a suitable centre for Max before we go anywhere, though.

I think it would be worth it just to watch the sparks fly between Kessel and Therrien. I don't think Kessel is that bad defensively. He's not a good defensive player by any means, but aren't we sick and tired of defensive players? Don't we have bushels full of them? He's an acceptable trade-off. If it is indeed Kessel, and the fit seems about right, the man can score and he's a guy that is difficult to defend on the PP. He's good at passes through people and he can shoot, so you have to honour the shot. It's not like we're weakening ourselves a whole bunch at centre. Haven't we been saying Eller can replace Pleks defensively and needs the opportunity to get more ice time?
I'm kinda hoping this is a done deal for Kessel, but then again it is a rumour.

The more I look at what's out there, and what could be the following summer, the more I think Berg will go a year before externally addressing it.

well, since the Leafs are going to sign Stamkos in two years when he becomes UFA they won't need Kessel.
I just don't like the money. gotta say, though, I like the goals.

This smells of desperation .....
Sure we need goals, and I've been crying for them as much as anyone ... But Phil freaking Kessel??
What do we know about Kessel? He basically got a coach who had them in a playoff spot fired. Why? Because he refused to play left wing, and because he refused to be taken off the top line. So, where do we play him? With Pacioretty and DD?? I don't think that makes us any better. All our horses are on the top line and we have a weak second and third line (pluggers on them ... Prust, Weise, and/or DLR)

Sounds like a made up rumor to generate ad revenue on blogger website to me. Questionable sources aside, there are some pretty big holes in this rumor: - Toronto trades its highest value asset before getting its management team in place? And without consulting its new big name coaching hire, who supposedly will have input on roster decisions?
- Toronto trades its highest value asset without getting the word out and opening up the bidding - to maximize return? Deciding that soon to be 33, soon to be UFA, Plekanec is the best return that they can get for a six time 30 goal scorer still in his prime?
- Toronto, a team in full rebuild mode covets an aging diminishing asset to build around?
I'm not against going after Kessel, but this one doesn't add up on many levels. The only way Pleks is involved, is if he's a small part of a much bigger deal.

Gives us something to talk about other than that ex-Mg Gill guy.

Points 2 and 3 especially tell me this makes no sense. Shanahan has said they are rebuilding. Why take a 33 year old?. Bergevin , I thought , covets real character. Kessel has displayed many times that he doesn't have it. Claude Julien, Ron Wilson and Randy Carlyle( 2 Cup winners there) wanted no part of him. That says a lot.

I'll give you point 3, to an extent. Getting out from under that contract doesn't likely come with a huge return. I do think Stamkos is on their radar, and they'd gladly slide that contract to Steve.
Re point two, league people have known Kessel and Phaneuf have been available for a while. Neither player is a typical deadline deal, so they should have been able to get something of a sense of value.
As I said earlier in this thread, the person who reported this is followed on twitter by credible media people - Stubbs included. Stubbs isn't going to follow some random blogger. This person likely has legitimate sources, and not someone who knows the son of the equipment manager or travel coordinator.

I think I can provide some plausible possibilities to your 3 points.
Point 1. - Let's see. They've hired a stats guy, a talent development guy and an extremely high profile coach, all without having a 'management team' eg GM, in place. Sound like pretty well par for the course to me. In other words, Shanahan is the management team. If anyone actually accepts the GM job, they'll be the guy looking like a bobblehead doll.
Point 2. - We can't be sure that didn't happen. Kessel was on the market for a while, so his value is probably determined. We may be giving up Pleks, our first plus...(insert favourite sacrifice). There may be other parts to the deal. Point 3. - Just because they're in rebuilding mode doesn't mean they have to remove all talent. The important part to the trade for TO is the first rounder in a deep draft, plus whatever prospect may be included. The body, they probably have to take back for CAP reasons relating to the other team. You don't move $8MM without some salary coming back, but as we know, the Leafs don't care much about that. Besides, it's only one year, compared to Kessel's numerous years.
Somehow this deal smells right to me. I think Berg has been trying to move Pleks for some time (my opinion only), and though Kessel's not a centre, he is a scorer. Make that deal and no one can say Berg didn't get a scorer. My question is if he'll stay a scorer.
