The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people. - Dwight D Eisenhower

A screenshot from the last known footage of Laurel and Hardy….taken in 1956 at Stan's residence. Stan had suffered a stroke in 1955. Ollie had recently dropped a lot of weight, finally taking care of himself after a heart attack. But in September of that year, Hardy suffered a major stroke which left him bed-ridden…..after two more strokes in 1957, he slipped into a coma and died on August 7 at the age of 65. Stan was too ill to go to the funeral, according to Wikipedia. He would pass away in 1965 at age 74. According to their legendary producer, Hal Roach….both were "freight train smokers". (Don't know the identity of the young man between them.)
