Bernier allows the first shot again...although it was an off-the-post rebound. 1-0 Wings on the PP.
EDIT: Abdelkader has his second of the night on the 3rd Wings' shot.
Greg Millen said Bernier had no chance. I think he did. But Millen's always quick to find excuses for Leaf goalies.
Bad angle...1st shot of the second period....Larkin gets his first NHL goal. Bernier out....Reimer in.
3-0 Wings....on 9 shots.
Abdelkader breaks in on a 2-on-1 and gets his hat-trick. 4-0. 2nd shot on Reimer. Short-side and smelly.
The Toronto crew is going to have a long year trying to stay positive. You can hear Healy already starting his snide remarks.

He has a history of allowing very stoppable shots past him. They've invested in a guy who is never going to bb better than average.

Cue up the season long excuses for the Sportsnet/CBC crews. The Babcock era is off and running!

Cue up the season long excuses for the Sportsnet/CBC crews. The Babcock era is off and running! Last night's spin-doctoring from the crew (paraphrased sentiment): Toronto is now following the Detroit model. Most of these Red Wings have been drafted and developed under their system, and look how great they are. Now, we have one of those architects (Babcock). So, the Leafs' future great players are now in the minors…and the process will continue…."Right. As if the Leafs haven't been drafting along with everybody else in the league all these years. Until then, a steady diet of "patience, rebuild, promise"…with Babcock as the face you can trust. Greg Millen said Howard "earned the shutout" last night. What a laugh...he maybe had 3 good saves to make. Everything else was routine. The Leafs generated nothing. Protect that asset, boys. They have one goal so far this season, and that was a double-deflected puck (not off sticks) past Price. The Sens should embarrass them tonight.

I think Detroit is getting more credit than they should as well. For all the "keeping players in the minors until they're ready" one could also say "They weren't good enough to crack the line-up until they were older". That puts a different spin on the scouting and the development. None of Datsyuk, Lidstrom or Zetterberg spent any time in the AHL. They did play in Europe until they were 21-22, which is a normal age for guys to break into the NHL on a regular basis, but once here, they played full time. Unless Datsyuk and Zetterberg have terrific years and stay healthy, I think Detroit may be in a dog fight for a playoff spot. Don't expect Abdelkader to score a hat trick every night. Wow, are the Leafs bad or what? They'll get better when Babcock has them playing his system properly, but it's still a bad team and needs Nylander, Brown, Marner etc to develop quickly.

... and the Wings haven't drafted THAT well. They hit two home runs with late picks on Datsyuk and Zetterberg. If not for those two players, they'd have been a bottom feeder the moment Lidstrom retired.

Right on, guys…and even Lidstrom was a late pick. Round 3, 53rd overall.
It's just a transparent PR spin by the Leafers. i.e. Shanahan (who wasn't drafted by the Wings) won 3 Cups in Detroit (not under Babcock)….and Babcock won a Cup in Detroit (8 years ago)…therefore, the Leafs will follow that model.
Last night, they also had a feature on how great Babcock is: interviewing Crosby, Toews, Tavares, and Bergeron on his work for Team Canada. Of course, they're going to say great things about him. They won gold medals.
Babcock's a great coach, no question…but he's not a miracle worker.

Sens prevail in the shootout despite PAP getting the first goal in the SO (do they ignore his first 65 mins yet?). Cue the excuses TO media, one loser point does not a Babcock win make.

Anybody see the Nashville/EDM game? Who in Nashville decided yellow helmets was a goos idea? Ugliest uniform combo in the league I think.

Reading through the box scores, I noticed an interesting fact. Tampa has scored 9 goals in 2 and a third games. D-men have points in 8 of those 9 goals. So important to have your forwards back check religiously vs those guys. I think if you do that well and transition well, you may get some good matchups against a forward playing defense or an odd man rush.

Rask with another weak outing, though he didn't get much help. Tampa beats Bruins 6-3.

OVECHKINJust heard on TSN690 that it wasn't personal reasons. He slept in and was either late for or missed the morning meeting/skate/practice. Ovie told the media today that he set his alarm for 8:30 PM instead of AM. Trotz scratched him. Caps lost 5-0 at home to the Sharks. Ovie's a temperamental guy…..wonder who'll win that battle, if there's one brewing. Chris Nilan said, "Let's face it. He goes through coaches like a bag of Lay's potato chips…"

Ovie told the media today that he set his alarm for 8:30 PM instead of AM. I did that once. It was at Whistler during a business convention and I missed a ride up the gondola, breakfast, and the meeting itself. My roommate and I took a lot of ribbing for that, but it was totally genuine. We had never missed any meetings before and we weren't hung over or anything. Just a silly mistake, so I can identify with Ovie, if he's indeed telling the truth.

I don't care what the reason Ovie missed a meeting. I haven't heard any rumblings that Ovechkin missing such things is the norm in Washington, ..., you do not bench your best player, a player who is top 5 in the league and arguably the best at what he does. What would us fans think if Therrien benched Price over something so trivial , worse yet, what if we miss the playoffs or home ice or whatever by 2 points.
Trotz is trying to prove a point, but Ovechkin is not the one to prove it on.
As for Nilan, Ovechkin scores goals like he ...fill in your blank .. Cause there are plenty of jokes to put in there if Nilan is poking fun at Ovechkin's work out ethic, or what have you

But, considering it came from an experienced, well-respected coach like Trotz, I'd hazard a guess that there's more to it that isn't public knowledge.

Trots said he believes it was an honest mistake, that the team didn't want to make a big deal about it. Huh? So you bench the best goal scorer in the world, and you think that's not a big deal?? He further stated that the message of team unity, that no one is above the team rules, was more important than the practice or Ovechkin playing. I wonder if the team felt the same as San Jose was walking all over them.... If I chastised my best Engineer for an honest mistake, he'd be pissed, and I'm sure I'd regret it ... The fact is, your valued employees ARE treated differently. To think you can treat them all the same is kinda laughable.

Thanks for that, Skilly.
You'd think a first-time warning would be warranted in that case. Unless Trotz is keeping a lid on it.
Very odd.

Chicago with just 4 points after 5 games. Are they going to be a surprise like LA was last year? Not enough depth, key players being worn out? It's still early, but they have little on their bottom 6 and even their top 6 is thinner than usual. I've never been a fan of their goalies either.

Wow. Is Boudreau on thin ice? Anaheim loses again, 5-1 to Nashville. The only bright spot? Sekac got his first goal.
