7 years and AAV of $4.25 million. Per Lebrun, deal is front loaded somewhat.

I haven't seen Abdelkader a whole bunch, but from what I have seen, he's a more defensive version of Dale Weise. Solid 3rd line guy. Scored a career high 23 goals in 71 games last year or .32 goals per game. Before that and this year, he averaged .116 goals per game. Detroit is obviously banking on Abdelkader being the guy from 2014/15 and not the guy from the previous 5 seasons. This year, he's averaging .266 goals per game. As a comparison, Weise, before this year, average .09 goals per game. This year, it's .47 goals per game, so far.
Big risk IMO. Would you trade Gallagher for Abdelkader? Gallagher has averaged .29 goals per game, but has done it at a much younger age than Abdelkader and is only getting paid 3.75MM a year. This year, Gally is averaging .41 goals per game. Not to mention the intangibles he brings. Abdelkader is a fine player, but I think Holland is overpaying in this case. Was he going to be a UFA next year? Can't see any other reason for this contract. It could come back to bite them in the CAP.

I think they view him as a potential captain. It's over payment in cash and term imo as well, but they're investing in a core guy they think is going to lead them.
