Watching the Expos tribute ... Tim Raines about to be introduced ... huge ovation ... hoping they bring out Felipe Alou ... lots of empty seats in the Big Oh ... is the interest in baseball there ...
Cheers.

Cheers. One of the stadiums main problems is that it's just too big Dis. Well, that and large pieces of it occasionally fall off, but that's another problem. But the size is really not conducive to a baseball atmosphere. They had over 50,000 for each game, but the stadium capacity is over 66,000. So even if you get 50,000 to the game, which is a huge number for any city, you're still going to have over 15,000 empty seats. To say nothing of the "dead areas" where there are no seats, like in center field, or around the scoreboards. So even though you have a massive crowd, it looks like 25% of the place is empty. But over 100,000 people for two exhibition games would seem to be a pretty strong indication that there is interest in baseball here.

But over 100,000 people for two exhibition games would seem to be a pretty strong indication that there is interest in baseball here. I really should have looked over the attendance figures, because those empty seats were misleading to me ... I've seen games in both Parc Jarry and the Big Oh, and of the two, Parc Jarry was a much better venue ... now, I don't know if this makes any sense, but while you can see the game from any seat in the Olympic Stadium, I found it's not all that good a venue to watch a game ... the structure, itself, is a concern, but I found I was just too far away from the field ... I was talking with Jack Todd on Twitter and I asked him if there was any place downtown that could accommodate a state-of-the-art facility ... he mentioned there was talk about putting a stadium in an area not far from the Bell Centre, but David Samson sold that space ... I asked him if this was the area Bill Lee was talking about putting a stadium that was in the mold of Ebbets Field and that was it ... the other place he mentioned was "maybe near Bridge St" ... are there any Montrealers who know this area ... would a ballpark fit down there ... I guess all they'll need after that would be corporate sponsorship ... that said, while I'd love to see the Expos return to Montreal, their still a little ways away from making it happen ... Cheers.

The Expos had a section of land given to them by the government just south of the Bell Center (across the street from the arena actually), but when things went south Samson and Loria did sell the land. There are now condos there, so that's no longer an option.
There are two spots being mentioned at the moment; the Peel Basin (Bridge Street), which is right down by the water, and the old Blue Bonnets site. Neither is particularly accessible by car, and the Peel Basin site would require a lot of demolition to clear some room. Doable, but not cheap. Blue Bonnets has more room, but it's farther away from the Downtown core. Not within walking distance, though there are a couple of Metro stops.
No doubt the stadium issue is going to be the biggest problem. Expect it to cost about a billion dollars when all is said and done. Loria and Samson really did have the best spot. Alas…

Going from the back of the picture to the front. Jeff Reardon, someone we can't see, Scott Sanderson, Terry Francona, Ron Howard, and I think Dan Norman. That would make this around 1982

So what's the story behind Ron Howard hanging out with the club?
My friends and I attended a LOT of games at the Big O. It would cost maybe $20 including Metro and food. We'd basically end up right at field level all the time despite our cheap nosebleed tickets. It was good times. But even then we knew it couldn't last. The place was a ghost town most of the time.

I think this was a game against Los Angeles, May 3, 1982 (they are wearing the road colours). The year prior to this, Rick Monday, rip the heart out of Montreal. And the Expos had the All-star game in 1982(?). So I'd say it was a promotional stunt

I remember a few of us discussing the Expos back in the day ... I mean way back in the day ... it was hard being an Expos fan in the years leading up to the end ... it ended up being a feeder team for the majors but it had its glory years, too ... Bill Lee detailed a lot of his experiences in Montreal on You Tube ... Cheers.
