Early bit of news that Joel Hanley has signed. I'm assuming it's a two-way contract. No word on specifics yet. He'll be a fixture in the "A".

This will help the IceCaps and he looked surprisingly okay in his late season call up...not that we would ever want to go that deep into the defensive depth chart again!!

Any chance Hudon goes the way of Morgan Ellis?

I think Hudon is a much better prospect than Ellis, but the team does seem to be taking their time with Hudon. He may end up being a victim of numbers more than anything as now that Lehkonen and Reway are both in the mix and at the main training camp, the competition for any forward ice time with the Habs is even tougher than it was last year when Hudon barely got three games in with the big club. He has not had to clear waivers yet (he won't have to until the 17-18 season), so there is no rush with him this season; however, the team needs to assess what they have in Hudon and if he can be a part of their (or another) NHL team beyond this season.

I'm hoping Charles Hudon doesn't get lost in the numbers; however, Lehkonen and Reway have developed well outside of the organization ... they've been playing against men most of the time and I think Hudon (and others) will have their work cut out for them ... very interested in seeing if Darren Dietz (Washington) and Morgan Ellis (St Louis) make their respective teams this year ... I thought Dietz had a shot, but both of these guys got lost in the numbers game ...
Cheers.

There was an interview with Habs last draftee from this year, Arvid Henrickson, about his experience at the development camp. He was asked who he was impressed with and he mentioned 4 guys. He said McCarron was good and that Sergachev was really good. Then he said the two guys with the most skill in camp were Reway and Hudon.
Now, Henrickson's an 18 year old kid, but he's also Swedish and they tend to be amazingly blunt in their assessments. I'd agree with him. I'm also disappointed that Hudon didn't get more opportunities last year, but it could simply have been a numbers game. They know what they have in Hudon, and they may not have been certain about Ghetto, or Carr or some of the other guys they brought up. Frankly, Hudon is head and shoulders above Matteau for example. Not the same kind of player, but Hudon will be much more productive. You could tell he was really nervous and not playing to his best during his 3 game call-up, but he still got 2 points and was +2. Matteau had one point in 12 games and was -4. Somehow, I'd make room for Charles. If they can move DD, he's the obvious replacement. Just as skilled, better shooter and better defensively.

I have always been of the opinion that your 3rd and 4th liners and 5 and 6th defenceman should come from your own organisation (Unless they are superiorly better in many categories). This way, you get cheap young players, and they get a chance to grow. Example: Hudon could of easily replaced Byron or Flynn, Matteau. It is the same for Ellis and Dietz over that guy we got from Nashville.

Interesting piece NWT. He's no doubt on the verge. The only thing I can figure is that they don't see him in a grinding role. Until they see a spot in the top six for him, or he takes one, he'll be on the outside. FWIW, 'ghetto puts up similar points per game at the AHL level, but I think the perception is that he plays with more jam.

It makes sense if you're planning on using Weber on the 3rd pairing. Dietz and Ellis were much cheaper. The 3rd line is not really a checking line anymore. It should be a decent 2 way line, which can chip in with a goal here and there, which means its a great spot to put your developing offensive players. Great spot for Hudon, either at centre or at one of the wing positions. Centre is kind of crowded right now and needs to be clarified. Danault is either a 4th or 3rd line centre depending on how his offensive game develops. Mitchell can play RW on the 4th line. Flynn is excess. Matteau is surplus. Competition is good, but too much muddies things up. We need to integrate some of our kids. Either that or trade them for more draft choices.

I know Flynn is a bit of a whipping boy in Habland, but he's one of our better (if not our best) faceoff guys, at close to 58%, and the fact that he is a righty to boot only makes it better. In fact, perhaps unbelievably, he is the ONLY forward to have a winning faceoff record while killing a penalty, with a 60% winning record. No other forward is above 48%. I get that this is a bit of a specialty stat, but still. It's not like he's completely worthless, in a Rene Bourque type of way. He wins faceoffs and kills penalties, where he wins even more faceoffs. For those that love puck possession that's kind of important, no?

Flynn has a lot of hidden tools that make him a valuable 4th liner, but was put in the unfortunate position of sometimes having even more TOI than Galchenyuk. It's gonna be really hard for him to win over the fans, but he's been a pretty good soldier for the Habs so far. Scored some pretty big goals in the playoffs too iirc.

Ice Cap lines:
Hudon - McCarron - Scherbak Matteau -Reway - Terry Del La Rose - Gregoire - Flynn Friberg - Audette - MacMillan
Samuelsson - Redmond Hanley - Lernout Parisi - Johnston
Condon Lindberg
Looks good on paper and a few names like Carr or Farnham could be sent down

Does indeed look good on paper. Let's hope it translates well into reality. Do you know who's coaching? (fingers crossed)

IceCaps lose 1-0 to Marlies in their first pre-season game. Typical outcome of another Levebvre coached team. Is it coincidence that are best young prospects come from teams not coached by him? (Sergachev and Lehkonen) Besides McCarron, I think all the others have halted in their progression. Scherbak, De La Rose, Hudon, Fucale, Audette should all be a lot closer to the big leagues than they are showing now.

I am about as far from being a fan of Lefebvre as you can get, but I will give the team a bit of a mulligan for laying a goose egg last night. They did rest a lot of their core guys as they played all the try-outs. They only have three pre-season games (all against the Marlies and in various Newfoundland communities) so they have to assess what to do with the guys not currently under contract or some of the bubble guys whom they may have to send to the ECHL. I agree that most of the prospects lack any "wow" factor at this point. If they aren't developing and the team isn't making the playoffs, how can you consider the coaching staff as being successful under any reasonable measure? I cannot at this point. Berg's blind spot for sure.

Berg's blind spot for sure. Well, you know my feelings about both Lefebvre and Therrien. In both cases, though, pre-season means nothing. The goal is to winnow out the guys who don't belong, so you're going to try out a lot of players who won't be there come crunch time. Let's wait till the season starts. I'd like to think Lefebvre is on thin ice this year, but I'd have let him fall through a couple of years ago. There's nothing in his resume that suggests he'll suddenly turn into a winner.

Friberg, Terry and Hudon with the goals. McC and Scherbak with nary a point. Fucale with 5 goals against.
Two more in two nights, all on the road and likely a lot of Fucale with Lindgren still back up with the boys.
