hmmmm.... that reminds me of someone ... I hope it doesn't get coached out of him. Juulsen is not a flashy defender. He plays top situational defense for one of, if not the most, defensively-aware coach in the CHL in Kevin Constantine. Shame he won't have Kevin coaching him at the next level. I think he likely develops into a Bouwmeester type. Smooth skater, gets the puck out of trouble, doesn't make many mistakes, doesn't get a lot of points. He might have a little more offense in him than Jay was able to develop.

Agree, he doesn't show flash for attention or to look good, does it only when needed.

Team Canada announced its selection camp roster for the upcoming WJC, and three Habs' prospects earned an invite. Defender Noah Juulsen is not a surprise in the least. His name pops up on most projected lineups given that he was the last cut last season and has really upped his game in many ways this season, and also dons the Captain's "C" in Everett. Rearguard Victor Mete is a bit of a surprise given Canada's depth in this position, but he is being rewarded for a very good year in London, on a very good team. Team Canada does tend to favour 19 year olds on defense, so he is likely in pretty tough. Even if he does not make the team this year, it could position him nicely for an even better shot at a roster spot on next year's team. Goalie Michael McNiven continues his solid play and keeps getting noticed. He had a very good outing in his start against the Russians on Team OHL earlier this month, with all of the Team Canada selection brass watching closely. He has been putting up great numbers in Owen Sound this year. He is one of three goalies getting an invite. Everett starter Carter Hart has to be as close as you can get as a lock for the Team Canada starter position, but McNiven has a decent shot at the back up role against Ingram from the Kamloops Blazers. www.hockeycanada.ca/en-ca/Team-Canada/Men/Junior/2016-17/Selection-Camp/Stats/team-rosters?teamid=128

The tournament is in Canada, he was a top ten pick, so I would expect him to get selected. But, the Russians do funny things sometimes.

A couple of good head to head prospect battles in the CHL last night. On Sportsnet, McNiven was tending the cage for Owen Sound against high flying London and smooth skating Victor Mete. McNiven got the W in a tight 3-2 SO battle, but Mete did get two apples on the Knights two goals. Steady eddy Juulsen was held off the scoresheet but was on the winning side of a 4-3 WHL battle with Medicine Hat. Bradley, who was back in the lineup and has been producing very well of late, had two helpers in the losing cause.

Six Lightning prospects made the team.
It seems the word "responsible' played a big role. I get kind of tired of that. You need responsibility yes, but there should always be a spot for an irresponsible, gifted offensive player. When the team has been unsuccessful, it's often been because they weren't able to score enough. That and goaltending at the other end, of course.
This year, the question marks for me are Sam Steel (who's killing the WHL) and Sam Girard. Little guy on defense, but has 35 points in 23 games for Shawinigan. That's incredible. Both were cut. In fairness, I don't know the guys who were kept instead. As always, we'll question the choices, until they win a gold.

Cart and Ingram were brick walls in camp. It was always going to be an uphill battle for McNiven, but getting the invite and having a great year is a fabulous story so far for an undrafted guy. Mete was cut too, but he was even more of a long shot and will likely be in the mix next year if he keeps his good play up. Hopefully Bitten will get a look next year too.
Good for Juulsen, as he should see a big role this year after being the last cut last year.

Juulsen among those selected to the final roster for u20 tournament. McNiven was among the last 5 cut. I follow young McNiven on Twitter and he was pretty jacked going into his final night ... wanted to prove his detractors wrong ... just being selected for the camp has to mean something ... he's still very young and there's time for development ... if Price re-signs of course ... Cheers.

Fucale starting to find his game in the ECHL these days. He got his first SO of the season last night, and has 6 wins in his last 7 starts. His only blemish was getting pulled after one on Friday night, but he did play Thursday, one period on Friday, and bounced back with the shutout last night. Pretty good run and he is getting in lots of hockey. His 11-3 overall record is a pretty good sign too.
Sergachev is also finding his offensive game of late, with six points in his last three games. He is also playing a key role in Windsor's stingy defence. After a slow and uninspired return after being cut by the Habs, he has been finding his form in time for the WJC.
The next guy who seems to be getting his game back on mark is Will Bitten, who has 8 points in his last 7 games. A small speedy guy who can put up points is much better than a small speedy guy who can't.

Sergachev's possession numbers (according to Mitch Brown who follows Habs prospects closely) have been excellent in the last couple of weeks. Never below 50% and a more telling stat is that his defense partner, Sean Day a 3rd round Ranger pick who had been highly touted 2 years ago) has a Corsi of over 50% when playing with Sergachev and 37% when he's not. Kinda like a Markov/Komi pairing. It says a ton about Sergachev's game.
Nice to see Fucale improving as well. Nothing wrong with playing in the ECHL. DD did it and Halak did (along with probably quite a few others..oh yeah Michael Ryder too). It's not a graveyard for some young players.

I was starting to write-off Fucale, but maybe he can turn it around. It's true that tons of guys have gone to the ECHL and made it later on, moreso since the IHL is gone and the ECHL has gone up a notch in terms of talent.

Never really know with goalies, but one thing I've noticed is that the ones who don't take up a lot of the net just don't get the high save percentages, it's just geometry really. Devan Dubnyk wasn't that special in juniors, but once he figured out how to use his massive frame to his advantage suddenly he's a vezina trophy candidate. With fucale I see another MA Fleury, a skinny kid from quebec that needs to come out a lot and challenge instead of taking up a lot of the net in his crease, that doesn't work very well anymore. Not sold on him every making it as a result.

I was thinking maybe it was because he didn't have a good team in front of him, but I started getting skeptical about two years ago ... he came up with some stellar performances but once he started letting them in, the floodgates would open ... now he's in Brampton and I think it will be very tough for him to get back to the AHL, let alone the NHL ... that's just my opinion, anyway ... Cheers.

For the advanced stats folks, here is a look at the ever improving impressive work that Sergachev is doing in Windsor these days. Corsi For % is a substitute for puck possession and control by taking the # of corsi events (shots on net, blocked shots, shot attempts) as a percentage of total corsi events for both team. Any percentage over 50 means your team should be dominating puck possession and play when you are on the ice. Getting over 70% means you are totally controlling play when you are on the ice.

just wondering . . . do you think he was at fault for the hit he took -- did he turn into the boards -- or should (the Russian player) have held up more?

Post by seventeen on Dec 27, 2016 15:19:30 GMT -5
I don't know. It would have been hard for the Russian to stop at that point, and to his (Guryanov's?) credit, he didn't follow through into the boards. I don't like blaming victims, either. Tough call.

They showed the hit from several angles and the Russian player was already into the check when the player turned so it wasn't a dirty hit. There was no way the Russian could have stopped his momentum at that point so just glad Juulsen was not hurt

Russia clobbers Latvia 9-1, although Sergachev was without a point.
Canada up shortly. Go Juulsen, Go Canada!
Major upset as Denmark just held off defending champs Finland 3-2. Finland is already 0-2 and in a heap of trouble.

Fucale got the win and made 33 saves doing so against HC Davos in the Spengler Cup action yesterday. TSN is showing the games, buried back on TSN 5 or so but lots of WJC games on TSN so I did not watch Fucale's game. He has been getting good results lately though.
