Canada with the defensive smothering of Slovakia only allowing 6 shots last night, and at least one of those was a generous count. Juulsen very calm back there, playing mainly a second pairing defensive role. His poise and controlled zone exits are there, but he is not being asked to show much on offence. Chabot has been that go-to guy for Canada. He looks good. So do Barzal and Jost (picked right after Sergachev).

Sergachev's possession numbers (according to Mitch Brown who follows Habs prospects closely) have been excellent in the last couple of weeks. Never below 50% and a more telling stat is that his defense partner, Sean Day a 3rd round Ranger pick who had been highly touted 2 years ago) has a Corsi of over 50% when playing with Sergachev and 37% when he's not. Kinda like a Markov/Komi pairing. It says a ton about Sergachev's game. Nice to see Fucale improving as well. Nothing wrong with playing in the ECHL. DD did it and Halak did (along with probably quite a few others..oh yeah Michael Ryder too). It's not a graveyard for some young players. I was starting to write-off Fucale, but maybe he can turn it around. It's true that tons of guys have gone to the ECHL and made it later on, moreso since the IHL is gone and the ECHL has gone up a notch in terms of talent. I didn't know that Fucale was in the ECHL. Brampton is only about 35 minutes away for me. Will have to try and get to a game or two.

Russia clobbers Latvia 9-1, although Sergachev was without a point. I don't mind it when 'our' guy doesn't get points in a blow-out. I like it when he gets points when they're needed. His goal vs Canada was a good one and an important one from Russian's POV. Probably the only deserved one.

They showed the hit from several angles and the Russian player was already into the check when the player turned so it wasn't a dirty hit. There was no way the Russian could have stopped his momentum at that point so just glad Juulsen was not hurt Fully agree and also wonder what Juulsen was thinking?!

Sergachev, 26 for Russia, on ice for 2 goals against so far as they trail usa 3-1. He's been quiet, but these goals can be attributed to others he was on the ice with. He got next to no time on the Russian PP that preceded the 3-1 goal. Russians constantly a half step behind the play. Mikhail appears to be a second pair guy.

Hard to understand the coaching, but it's very likely a political thing. Similar to how the US views players who go to the CHL rather than college. Debrincat, who is as talented a pure scorer as Clayton Keller (at least at this age level) gets cut. Duh.

Fucale and Canada win 5-1 at the Spengler today, booking a spot in the semis. Only goal against was 5 on 3.

Good night for our OHL guys last night. Mete had four assists, McNiven had a shutout, Addison potted two goals, and Bitten bulged the twine once.

Russia is , perhaps more, famous for favoring players that play at home. He's got a bomb from the point and for perhaps the first time ever the team is using 4 forwards on power plays. Coincidence?

Don't look now, Fucale and Canada just beat Dynamo Minsk to advance to tomorrow's final in the Spengler Cup. Young Zachary likes playing hockey this time of year. Two years ago he was bacstopping Team Canada to WJC gold.

I hope he plays better tomorrow than he did in the WJC final. Good to see his game improving. That is good competition at the Spengler, so he's earning his stripes.

Fucale has been pretty solid in the ECHL leading up to the Spengler. If he can ever get those rebounds better under control, get a bit further out in his crease, and play a bit bigger...who knows.
McNiven turns pro next season, so the internal competition ramps up again. Lindgren has already established himself with his good play in his rookie season on a pretty mediocre IceCaps team. The Habs need to sign a goalie for next year to have an exposed guy for the expansion draft, as Lindgren, Fucale and McNiven will all be exempt.

Fucale in net as the final is on right now on TSN3. Cool to see Max Lapierre playing for Lugano.

5-2 Canada, so Fucale adds the Spengler Cup to his WJC and Memorial Cup resumes. Kid seems to be in the right place at the right time for championship teams. He played a key role in the Mem Cup win and not so key a role in the WJC. Don't know how he did in the Spengler yet. (I PVR'd it. No way I was getting up at 3 a.m.)

Took over the starting job when Drew MacIntyre and the boys lost 7-4 against Minsk in the first game and then he ran the table. There is a nice interview with him after the win, and he talks about how the heavy schedule was tiring for them all but he learnt a lot about himself. Lots of Habs connections at the tourney. Lapierre and James Wisniewski played for Lugano, Scrivens was in net for Minsk, and an old draft pick Mark Flood also played for Canada...just to name a few I noticed. The final was a good game. Lots more hockey today with the WJC and the Habs to wrap it up.

Zach still moves a little too much, but he had a very good tournament. It should be a great confidence boost for the second half of the year.

Sure, there's a step down in talent, but supreme talent doesn't mean supreme games. These games are always entertaining. The fans are as engaged as anywhere. They feed off the action and the teams feed off them. It would be a great experience even as a fan.

Some big Friday night performances from a few of our boys.
McNiven had a shutout, USHL defender Casey Staum had three helpers, and Matt Bradley had a monster night with two goals and three assists.

Canada lost to USA 3-1. Fell behind early. Two penalties, two goals against. Canada doesn't have a natural qb. IMO, Juulsen is the closest, but he's getting second pair minutes and little PP time. His shot is his weakness as far as I can tell. Little to know sustained offensive pressure at any point in game. Canada had two 5-on-3 opportunities. They barely took advantage of the second for their lone goal. If they play that way against Sweden, they get smoked.

Since being cut from the WJC team, McNiven has played three games, has three wins, has given up just one goal, has made 73 saves on the 74 shots faced, and has two shutouts.
Since being cut, Victor Mete has had a 4 assist game, a 1 goal game, and was shutout last night even though his team won.

Il timed slide by Juulsen when Bean made a really bad pinch. 2-2 now. Ingram has 2 gaa on five shots. That is a .600 save %.

Original ticket prices were really high for games not featuring Canada. Resellers were putting them up for sub $20 at the last minute. I don't know how many people living in Montreal use resellers to buy tickets. Seeing how much the face value of tickets was going in, even for games not featuring Canada, I can see why some might have stayed away. Here's another Toronto-Montreal WJC, Montreal gets the pool that doesn't feature team Canada, and ticket prices are at an NHL level - as are concessions.

Juulsen makes some solid break-out passes... but unfortunately he's getting a mediocre mark on the "eye test" from me. I haven't been all that impressed, to be honest with you. If he has time he can make a really nice pass, but if he's pressured he tends to make some... "interesting" decisions with the puck. Just my opinion.

Sergachev has his best game of the tournament (especially the third) in a losing effort. About as even a game as you could ask for between Russia and the USA. Both goalies made great saves. Guryanov was likely Russia's best forward. Boy can he shoot. Terry with THREE goals in shoot out, all through 5 hole with the game winner being a smooth back-hander.
