I'm very surprised that we went 7 rounds today without picking up a Dman. Afterall, defense is our weakest position both quantity-wise and quality-wise. Also, Gainey has always been a defense first kind of guy. I guess they really did go with who they considered the best player available throughout the day. I am however somewhat concerned about our lack of depth at maybe hockey's most important position.

I noticed some teams were taking defensemen earlier than they were slated to be. For example Tampa took that 6'7 monster (I wouldn't have minded Montreal taking him in the 2nd round, especially if Latrendresse hadn't been available) and I don't think there were many available. For the most part I like our picks despite there not being a d-man. Price is a fairly good pick-up and I didn't want the Habs to take Brule anyway, Latrendresse could be a huge steal, the guys in the 4th, 5th and 6th round seem decent and I hope the Habs stole something with Siarhei Kostitsyn in the 7th.

Here's the guy the Habs had their eye on:
Round 7/229 Philippe Paquet, D
HT WT Team 6-3 200 Salisbury (USHSE)
2004-05 Stats GP G A Pts PIM +/- 26 1 4 5 10 -
Scouting Report: Not to be confused with QMJHL defenseman Jean-Philippe Paquet (also a 2005 draft-eligible defenseman), Philippe Paquet has chosen the college hockey route and will join Clarkson College in 2005-06; owns excellent size for the defense position and above-average mobility for a 6-3, 200 pounder; passes the puck with aplomb and owns a wealth of offensive upside; must prove he can compete at a higher level; will need to show more physical toughness as a pro.

A little patience is all we need.
Bet he makes the Habs before Hiansey. ;D

Not a bad "longshot" prospect to "trade" Langdon for.
