After all the hoopla surrounding Poehling and Ikonen at the Summer Junior Showcase, this camp and tourney will be a little lacking in star power and offensive excitement. Although, it will be great to see how far Martin Reway's recovery has come and how he looks on the ice. No real new invitees except a goalie, so Maxime Fortier and perhaps Goulet will be hoping to get even a minor league deal out of this for the fall. For those in the GTA, the rookies will play against Leaf and Sens rookies at Ricoh on September 8 and 9.
Poehling is missing due to NCAA commitments and Ikonen is already playing with KalPa back home in Finland. I will look forward to hear how some of the newbie defenders like Brook, Fluery and Walford perform.
I would expect that guys like McNiven, Mete, Juulsen and Bitten should be noticeable out there.
The games might be on Leafs tv for those living behind enemy lines.

While it would be nice to have two of our best sub 20 prospects at this mini tournament, their obligations are understandable. Wonder if the Habs leave Poehling at St. Cloud.

I wouldn't think there's any doubt Poehling is staying at St. Cloud State. One more year for sure and if his coach had any say, it would be for 2 more years. He feels Poehling would be more mature physically and more ready to enter the NHL than he would after his sophomore season. Needs must. If he keeps improving (he's already 6' 2" and 195 pounds) and we're still weak at centre, I can see Bergevin making a push to sign him. I would.
I desperately hope Reway stands out big time at this camp. He's older than most of the guys and definitely has had more experience against men. I'd really want to see his speed relative to others and his strength. I don't question his hockey IQ. The same season that Reway only played 19 games in the Swiss A league, Auston Matthews had 1.28 points per game for Zurich. Reway had 21 points in 19 games or 1.11 ppg. Reway is not Matthews, but his offensive game is pretty good. Fribourg-Gotteron was hardly an offensive juggernaut either. Reway was obviously their best offensive threat. That may have been the year he moved back to the Czech Republic because of family issues. He played 14 games and score 15 points in the Czech league.
Don't know if you can tell, but I consider him quite a potential surprise.

Yeah, to me this camp and those two games are all about the Reway watch.
What do we still have with him?

I wouldn't expect Poehling to leave for Montreal. I was just wondering about his CHL rights and if Montreal might try to get him to leave.

On a Lefebvre coached team, that is pretty well the season. What a shame.

Nice feed by Poehling in last night's exhibition game against U of Regina.

Jake Evans, the 21 year old centre playing in his fourth and last NCAA season with Notre Dame kicked off his season on the right foot last night. He had two goals and a helper. He was just a tick over a point a game player last season and just under the year before. This young centre is doing all the right things to get a contract at the end of this year. A few prospect followers actually wondered if the Habs would do it this past summer and get him out early. Regardless, he is more than holding his own for an obscure seventh round pick.

Evans with two more assists tonight. Great opening weekend for him.
Bitten with an assist in a 3-2 shootout loss. He has 5 points in his first 5 games.
Cayden Primeau with a shutout win, his first of both in the NCAA.

Jarret Tyszka, our fifth rounder this past draft, is off to a decent offensive start for a defender. He plays on Seattle, who really bombed in last year's Memorial Cup appearance. He had two more assists tonight, which gives him 7 helpers in 6 games. In fact, all of his points have been from his last four games. Of our four WHL blue liners picked in June, he seems to be the one that gets the least hype. He seemed quite raw, so it will be interesting to see how his Draft+1 year goes, as with all of those four defenders. They are all decent sized guys who are mobile and can move the puck. We need more of those in the system as we seem to be lacking good ones in the pro ranks.
Edit: There are definitely some questions about his defensive traits. Still lots of work to do.

Vejdemo with the lovely tip in front for the GWG today. This is his second goal and fourth point in 7 SEL games, so starting to get his offence back on track after a tough year last season.

Lots of our CHL and NCAA kids were in action last night.
Will Bitten kept on his point a game pace with his second goal last night. He has 7 points in 7 games.
Ryan Poehling had a couple of assists. He now has 3 points in his first two games. He had 13 points in total last season, so he is well on his way.
Jake Evans had a goal last night as his team battled #1 Denver. He has 6 points in his first three games.
Scott Walford, one of our WHL D draftees this summer had an assist in his fourth straight game with Victoria. I am hoping to see him next week when the Royals are in town.

Ryan Poehling got his first goal of the year and 4th point in three games.
Evans had two assists in Notre Dame's 4-2 loss last night against top ranked Denver. 8 points in 4 games.
McNiven gave up 5 goals in Brampton's 5-4 home opener loss.
Bitten with his third goal and the shootout winner.
Lukas Vejdemo had a good night with a 1+1 game. He has 6 points in 9 SEL games. He has found his game back after an off year. Interesting to see if they bring the 21 year old Swede over to the AHL next year. He might earn a deal if he keeps this up. They have two years to sign him and make a decision.
Walford with another assist, Primeau gave up 3 goals in a 3-3 tie, Pezzetta had an assist as did long-forgotten defender Koberstein with U of Alaska Fairbanks.

Good stuff NWT. If there was ever such a title, you would be the Habsrus director of amateur scouting!

Ryan Poehling had two assists last night as St Cloud State topped Boston College 5-2. 6 points in 4 games, so a nice start for Ryan on the scoresheet.
A surprisingly good start for 19year old Michael Pezzetta this season, after coming off last year best known for bad penalties, suspensions galore, and injuries. He had two points last night and now has 11 points in 11 games. He was all but a write off for me last year and figured there was no way they would even consider giving him a deal after this season. Now, who knows. I have not seen him play as the only televised Sudbury game last season ended up being rescheduled due to weather, so the broadcast was cancelled. He was a sixth rounder in 2016, so he was/is always going to be a long shot.

Definitely seems to have gone into the season in the right frame of mind. 8 points in his first five games, including a point in every game. Pretty good start for an 18 year old in the NCAA. This could be a big year for Ryan. His team is highly ranked in the NCAA (currently third, but they could move up as top Denver had a tie this weekend), and he figures to play a key role on the USA world junior team. It is early going yet, but always nice to see progression from a prospect. Remember too he was the youngest player in the NCAA last year. It is easy to overhype a young prospect, but Ryan does tick off a lot of boxes so far.

Not to take anything away from Poehling, but is it possible that you're thinking of Boston University rather than Boston College? BU is always a real powerhouse. Regardless, Poehling is producing the type of offense that we all probably feared he didn't have and/or wouldn't develop. I came across the highlights from his game against Alaska. It shows some creativity on top of a 200 ft game, as an 18 year old to boot. Feeling pretty good about this pick.

One guy who is off to a rough start in his early pro debut is Michael McNiven. He is playing with Brampton in the ECHL as Fucale earned the backup AHL job, but McNiven’s stats to date have been very un-McNiven like.
He is 0-2-1 in his three starts with a .864 save percentage and 4.59 gaa.
Brampton as a team is off to a very tough start. They have one point from their OTL in four games.

BC does have strong teams in most years, but BU has been a beast of late. They had 6 guys on the US gold medal world junior team last year. BU and BC were ranked 7 and 13 in the USCHO poll heading into action this weekend. St Cloud State (Ryan’s team) is ranked at or near the top in all the polls/rankings so far. Hope he keeps it going.

No confusion here. BC is a perennial team. They're not BU, but they play in perhaps the toughest NCAA division - Hockey East - and do very well. If they're not a powerhouse they're certainly closer than St. Cloud, historically speaking.

Thanks, NWT. He certainly covers a lot of ice and clearly has tons of smarts and a great work ethic. I guess I understand why scouts labeled him as a 3rd line center, since it would be tempting to use him in a shutdown role given how great he looks defensively. Thankfully, there looks to be more offense there than the scouts claimed. Maybe he can be a Ryan Kesler type in that he could bring elite defense along with top 6 production. Granted, these videos are probably never going to show his mistakes and bad reads, but I his highlights are very encouraging.
