The inaugural season is almost upon them. New digs, new unis, some new and exciting faces, and the same old stale coaches.
RDS has announced it will broadcast 16 games including the home opener. Given the location of the franchise, I was selfishly hoping for more!

Some main camp cuts made, with six heading to the Rocket training camp next.
In other news, Maxine Fortier has been sent back to juniors as a 20 year old rather than being invited to the AHL camp. Maybe he did ride on that Nico kid's coat tails a bit. I figured he would do enough to get a good looksie. Guess not.

I figured he would do enough to get a good looksie. Guess not. I wouldn't say that's the case. He had 77 points the prior season. Timo Meier had been traded halfway through the season. Somppi was a raw rookie that looks like he's plateaued. Not only did he lead the team in points, but he did in goals as well. He's 5'10 and 175lb give or take. Might be that the club thinks they have enough of that type of player. He's a late 97 bday, which allows him to play this season in Halifax. He's not slow. He's got a game that should get him a pro contract somewhere. It might not be the NHL, but he's too good to fizzle out after junior.

Juulsen suffered a fractured foot on the 18th in Quebec City; he is expected to miss six weeks. Guess his pro season debut is delayed.
Was hoping to see another few pre-season games with him playing. Oh well.

I know blny just posted this news in the GDT, but I will add the list here for those tracking the names headed to the AHL camp. Four of these guys are on AHL deals anyway.

Eisenscmid and McNiven cut from camp and sent to the AHL camp. Redmond was put on waivers today, and will head to the Laval camp when he clears.

Wasn't he an option for #6 dman at one time? Another undiscovered gem? Can't you tell I'm tired of all these fringe guys we pick up? We have, what, 3 or 4 more vying for a spot right now? I'd just as soon give it to Mete and clear up the excess.

I'd just as soon give it to Mete and clear up the excess. I think that was the idea, or at least what they thought he could maybe achieve. They saw a fair bit of him as he was in St John's while property of the Avs. Given that he signed for a fair bit less than his previous contract, I think it fair to say third pair was max and a good chance he'd be logging a lot of air miles.

A little surprised to see Lernout go, but it was going to happen. Thought he might get a game with a "real" lineup.
Mete is still around. He is headed back to juniors, but nice to see him get some more exposure. Of course, they played him with Weber...does not hurt.

Three guys who don't need to clear waivers headed to Laval. I expect we see a few names on waivers today too.

I doubt any of the 'depth' players signed have any trouble clearing waivers.

They also recalled Scherbak for likely one of the last two preseason games. He can move up and down without any waiver implications.
Fucale is also back with the big club since both Lindgren and Montoya are day to day.

I doubt any of the 'depth' players signed have any trouble clearing waivers. Unlikely. Terry is a career minor leaguer. No one takes him unless they want veteran scoring for their farm team. Given that his contract is one way at 650k I don't expect a lot of interest. Few will want that price tag.

McCarron and Jerabek assigned to Laval. Carr and Holland on waivers first.
Jerabek was better than both Davidson and Morrow, but does not have to clear waivers. He gets the short end of the stick IMO.
Froese and Martinsen are still around up front. Weird. Holland was better than both.
Streit, Morrow and Davidson still there on D. Gelinas still there on his PTO. None have done anything much.
More cuts to come before the roster deadline on Tuesday.

Rocket lost 3-1 yesterday, but did not dress the vets (Redmond, Taormina, Terry, etc.). Lernout with the goal, McNiven gave up two goals as the third was into an empty cage.
Both Carr and Holland cleared and have been assigned to Laval.

I thought Holland looked pretty good too. Little surprised. Martinsen has done his job too. My expectation, and I'm sure his, is that he'll be the 13th forward.

Looks like the goalie decision has been made for the Rocket. Lindgren and Fucale will mind the nets in the AHL, and McNiven will get to play lots in Brampton in the ECHL.

Welcome to the Twilight zone, namely, Sylvain Lefebvre's house of worship. There is an AHL rule regarding a maximum number of NHL veterans one can dress for a game, 5. It seems KHL players are equated with NHL players and both Jerabek and Gelinas fit the category. So does Taormina, of the defensemen. I can see dressing Taormina, who is an excellent AHL defenseman. So, then it comes down to choosing between Gelinas and Jerabek.
Gelinas - big shot, great skater, Hockey IQ of a lawn sprinkler, entirely unlikely to ever make the Habs.
Jerabek - Good skater and puck mover, needs to learn to play on smaller ice surface, development crucial to Habs.
So, naturally, Lefebvre picks Gelinas. No, you are not hallucinating. There is no logical reason for that decision. I still have no freaking idea why Bergevin would even offer him an extension. I seriously wonder, despite the big improvement in talent on the roster, if this team can make the playoffs with Lefebvre as coach. He will find some way to derail the train.
