Adam Plant is an undersized guy who finished his four years at Denver, a very good NCAA program, and he played his junior A hockey in the BCHL. He will be on an AHL contract next season, so does not count against the 50 NHL contract limit. Not impressed by his college stats and he turns 23 in May. Six and five for 11 points in 32 games. Not impressive for a senior. Must be a defensive type.

He can skate. He was on a winning team.
You want goals too?
I always worry about undersized D that don’t put up points. Mete is actually on the bubble for me. I know that may shock, but unless you have an NHL shot, you are still a bottom pairing guy no matter how well you skate. Especially if you are small. And I like the kid, but I still think some of our D prospects will be better for us.

Hershey doubles up on the Rocket 6-3.
Lindgren got an assist and Korostolev scored his first. That’s about it.

The Rocket add a couple of more OHLers to their ever-expanding list of amateur try-outs to end up the season. Here is Grant's take on the pair.

File this under the too little too late folder. The trio get another week of hockey under their belts on a last place team.

McCarron and Rychel are, I believe, waiver-eligible, but I expect we won't lose them to waivers and they'll be injury call-ups, at best. I don't see them as guys who stick in camp unless injuries have already hurt us. I wouldn't be surprised if McCarron were dealt for a 4th rounder or a non-waiver eligible prospect - that's the kind of asset management (mid-round picks and waiver-eligible guys and so on) that Bergevin is good at. He's just no good at the rest of his job. Lernout could still use some seasoning but he's an ok 3d pairing D right now, and I could see him completing a 2nd pairing with a smallish mobile guy like Mete one day.

Forgive my ignorance, but does the AHL provide any worst-team compensation?
The Rocket, at present, are at the bottom of the entire league with a .392 winning pct.

I am not sure if any of them are good enough to be on our roster next season if improvements are made to the team over the summer. That being said, there is the issue that all three have to clear waivers next year. I don't see Lernout getting claimed, but someone could possibly claim McCarron if they are still lured by his bulking size, rather than his skating agility. I think your prediction is right, he could very well get dealt on his own or part of a bigger deal over the summer. The team could also do what they did with DLR this past year. Hide him as a healthy scratch for long stretches until a spot opened up with the Pleks trade. That has worked out quite well for DLR, but can it repeat itself for both McCarron and Rychel? The challenge is you also have guys like Hudon, Scherbak and DLR who also are all waiver eligible. That is a very crowded house for bubble guys like Rychel and McCarron, although all teams have guys like them that get sent down at the beginning of the year due to the numbers game. As long as Claude does not continue his obsession with a guy like Froese (under contract for another year), who took a roster spot far more and longer than I ever expected to see as did Logan Shaw (RFA this summer, so the Habs still need to qualify him to keep his rights). I think there will be enough changes over the summer that some of these moves will be a little clearer by the fall.

I mostly assess these guys the same way. At this stage the only one that interests me from a developmental standpoint is Lernout. McCarron seems like a good teammate but he has really not improved enough to imagine him playing regularly in the NHL. Rychel is more involved on the ice than McCarron but the Habs are not really lacking left wings for the third or fourth lines.
I would like to see Carr stay with the Habs. Froese started of well but over longer periods of time (weeks, months) it becomes noticeable that he does not really do any one thing so exceptionally well that he objectively edges out other guys on the roster bubble, same for Logan Shaw. One thing that should be concerning to the club, in particular if Plekanec is not returning and Pacioretty is departing, is how bad the bottom six boys have been killing penalties. I do not mean criticize only them but, for example, Deslauriers and Logan Shaw are not good PKers. Frankly, virtually all of the roster bubble crew (McCarron, Rychel, Shaw, Froese, Carr) at forward offer nothing or too little to solving the the team's imperious need to improve the penalty kill.

If any of those guys are still on the roster, I expect another losing year. Rychel showed me is skating is not nearly good enough. L Shaw and Froese just don't have enough talent. McCarron has a 20% chance of getting better simply because big guys take longer, often till 25 years of age. He needs to get quicker and stronger. The bigger question is why are we even talking about these guys?
The fact they were on the roster for as long as they were is damning enough.

He's a massive improvement on Froese, who is clearly AHL material at best IMO. Too true. None of the guys you mentioned should be seen as more than waiver fodder in any case.

I mostly assess these guys the same way. I agree, Lernout seems like a steady, physical defenseman with an ok first pass. Kind of like Greg Pateryn, frankly, but with a steadier game at a younger age. I corrected that for you :-P

Logan Shaw impressed me as a passable 4th line, filler type of guy. He's a massive improvement on Froese, who is clearly AHL material at best IMO. Shaw has 6 points in 30 games and because of injuries has probably played more minuutes than he would normally get. That's just not good enough for me, not even for a 4th liner. I think we have to expect more if we want the team to be better. Any 4th liner has to get at least 20 points For example, Daniel Carr has 16 points in 38 games, or a prorated 34 points over 82 games. That's probably high for a 4th liner, but we know Carr is a pretty good scorer. That's more of what I'd like to have on the 4th line.

The Rocket finish out their miserable season this weekend with B2B games against the Toronto Marlies. It is a tale of two franchises, as the Rocket currently sit 30th of 30 teams and the Marlies are atop the entire league. The Rocket recently had McCarron, Rychel and Lernout returned to them, so they will have something to play for as the season wraps up. This will also be the 11th and 12th regular season games between the two teams. I am sure the Rocket have helped the Marlies to their lofty record and vice versa.
If you are in the mood to get one last dose of televised Rocket hockey, TSN2 and RDS have Friday night's game on at 7:30 EDT.
Will it be the swansong for the coaching staff, or will they be spared from the chopping block? I am sure there will be a lot of folks watching to see what Berg does with his AHL coaching staff once the season is done this weekend. I think my vote is well documented!!

The article doesn't get into the details of coaching, or else it might have regressed. He had a difficult year, given the injuries to both teams and the subsequent call-ups, but as has been mentioned before, a guy like Trent Cull of Utica had the same issues and he led his team to a playoff spot. Utica is Vancouver's farm team, so it's not as if they had a plethora of prospects playing for them yet (that will change as soon as these playoffs and next year). Either Benning did a better job of stocking Utica (questionable) or Cull did a much better job coaching a similar team. Sly made the playoffs once in his 5 seasons. Once. And that once was helped along by a rule change. FRom the comments of journalists, Lefebvre is a decent guy and I'll take their word for it. He a decent guy doing a very poor job of coaching a hockey team. Sigh.
PS. Had to add this point. Lefebvre makes a legitimate point about losing his captain (Byron Froese) to the Habs and the inference is that it was a huge loss to the Rocket. I think he's right. So with that in mind...look at the pros and cons of elevating Froese to the Habs. Benefit to the Habs....nothing. He's not good enough nor is he young enough to expect an improvement in play at the NHL level. Maybe he would be safer than playing a guy who fits that other description...a prospect, but the prospect would gain some valuable experience. Froese may get a higher salary, but you can fix that at the AHL level as well if that's the issue. Benefit to the Rocket? Lots. He's the captain. He provides leadership, ability, scoring and improves the chances of the team making the playoffs.
Why on earth did they bring him up? It's yet another puzzling decision in a slew of cases where one questions Bergevin's (and correspondingly Lefebvre's) judgment.

9 shots between the two teams in the first. Zzzzz Marlies up 1-0 early in the second. Planet did not have his guy at the side of the net, and it is in the back of the net. If Gregoire had any hands, it would be tied. Lindgren robs Bracco. A doozie save. Marlies go up 2-0 on their PP, Rocket get booed on theirs. Tale of two franchises. A two on oh, with Petti and Boucher, and not a shot on net. 4-0 with 11 left in the third. Time to switch full time to the Jets game. Marlies will go 11-1 against the Rocket, including 6-0 in Laval. Laval will end the season with just 10 home wins. The fans are still showing up, but for how much longer next year if this continues? If the Habs do promote Sly to assistant coach with the Habs, we will have a good shot at Jack Hughes.

De la Rose is not an exciting prospect but at least he is a prospect. De la Rose could have played an extra 20 games if the organisation's hockey braintrust could recognize that 27 year olds who never showed NHL quality during their auditions in the league do not suddenly transform into viable NHL players. It would not surprise me if Bergevin in September is fretting in camp about the prospect of losing Froese on waivers and thus elects to keep him in Montreal.

Only a few positives out of the Rocket season as they lost both games this past weekend to the Marlies. Terry won the scoring title and Lindgren gets an invite by the US to the Worlds.

Despite the bad season, both Carriers and Lefebvre were their usual delusional foxhole selves at their interviews with the media.
Sly talked about having to use 51 players during the season, and then blamed the callups, injuries and character for their results. He also said he hopes to be back next season. Sorry Sly, I am hoping for the opposite.
Carriere also referenced the 51 players (their party line no doubt) and was happy with how the callups did in Montreal. What? He also thinks the team has a great future and he was happy with how the coaching staff did. Huh? They were bottom of the league, how can the future be so bright Larry???

If our players could deflect as well as our suits, we'd have scored 300 goals this year. Anyway, it's reassuring to know that our organization values accountability....

Thanks goodness the solution to this whole mess throughout the organization's pro hockey ranks is attitude (or the slightly dated version of "character" if you are Sly). Yup, all is fine with the amateur and pro scouting, the player development, the coaching, and the overall team architecture. (in what world? ) If this is Molson's new era of transparency, then nothing will change with the current crew in place. They may change up the players, but when they underperform they will no doubt get the same "thrown under the bus" treatment. This is not just an embarrassment to the pride of this historic franchise, but this is just antiquated management practices. Forget the lofty goal of expecting an ounce of leadership out of this crew...that seems like a pipe dream. Chuck the lot of them.
