Gustav Olofsson, it was nice to know you. He had surgery for his latest shoulder injury and will be out six months. The Rocket did get two games (well part of the second game, as he did leave it after he was injured) in that trade this season. He is an RFA at the end of this season, so the team still holds his rights if they chose to do so. Just when you might think we're passed bad pro scouting and the trades it leads to ... There wasn't one guy in the department that saw red flags on this one? All I had to do, post-trade, was go on HF and there were a plethora of Wild fans discussing is oft injured shoulder(s). Trade Bitten if you must, but this trade belongs in the loss column.

The prospect pool has improved considerably, but there is still not much in the way of goal scoring in Laval or anywhere else for that matter. For this reason alone, management needs to be careful about dispensing with Scherbak too soon.

The Rocket take their woeful 11.6% PP efficiency against Belleville tonight. That has to get better.
The Place Bell is full of pro scouts. Scherbak’s first pro game of the year. Coincidence? I think not.

Same old, same old last night in Laval. They could not score and they PP had another "0 fer" night (it is now down to just 10.6% efficiency...brutal).
The Rocket outshot the Senators 18-0 in the third period alone and could only muster one goal, this nice snipe from Jake Evans - his second of the year. Either they are really poor shooters or they are consistently running up against Patrick Roy every night. Hmmmmm.
This is not the happy teenager we all remember from draft day. Hope he can get back in the lineup soon and earn a spot. It sucks to see him wasting away.

To put this bad start by the Rocket into perspective. are you telling me that Lefebvre and co were better coaches than what we have now? say it isn't so!

are you telling me that Lefebvre and co were better coaches than what we have now? say it isn't so! This team is playing much better hockey than under Lefebvre, but its scoring/shooting percentage, PP and save percentage are all rock bottom right now. They actually deserve a better record than they have, but they really need to fix that deadly trio of stats pronto. Is it lack of talent, poor coaching or just bad puck luck? Whatever it is, they need to turn it around soon. They are playing a very important string of about 9 games straight within their division. This is when they need to turn it around and get points, because these are critical games against divisional rivals.

Jeremiah Addison missed most of his first pro year to injury last year, and has yet to get a game in this season with the Rocket. Is he injured? Is he a healthy scratch? It sure has been fuzzy on that front. The team just assigned him to the Brampton Beast of the ECHL and now have put him on unconditional waivers. I guess that means an intent to terminate his contract.
His big highlight was being the co-captain of Windsor and hoisting the Memorial Cup alongside teammate and fellow prospect Sergachev. Things changed quickly in less than two years. 7th rounders are always a crap-shoot, but this is a strange ending.

A little bit more on the Addison situation. Obviously, something went seriously south this season.

The Rocket won in OT yesterday against Utica to get the weekend split, and more importantly, snap their losing streak. They lost on Friday night in what most Rocket watchers called their worst performance of the year. They have lost a lot of games, but have been the “better” team except for that silly scoreboard thingie. Yesterday, Jake Evans won it in OT and McNiven shone in net. A big relief for the team, no doubt. McCarron was missing due to injury and Scherbak left the game due to illness, so they moved a few guys up into bigger roles like Evans.

Addison's development was uneven and injuries have no doubt played a role.
There are certainly guys who played in the ECHL and ultimately made it. But it probably takes an individual with a great work ethic. I have no idea what Addison is like. Also, he might have looked at the situation in Brampton being one where a Habs prospect is not a priority and he would rather move on.
Again, I hate to belabor this point but it does not reflect well on ownership or management that the Montreal Canadiens organisation fell behind the curve and lacks its own ECHL affiliate.

The Rocket won 4-3 in Utica tonight. 2 in a row. Goals by Chaput, Audette, Alain (his first AHL goal) and Grenier. Rocket fight back from being down 2-0 after one. They scored the next three. Then when Utica tied it up, Bouchard pulled McNiven and brought in Lindgren. Charlie shut out Utica the rest of the way and Evans got an assist on Chaput’s winning goal. That was the 5th point for Evans in his last five games. Fleury also has a good game, and was on the top pairing with Kulak.
Scherbak did not get any points, but was creating chances for his line and folks that watched said he was implicated and played well.
The Rocket are briefly back in a playoff spot. The Marlies have games in hand, so they will leapfrog likely, but it shows that these division matchups are key wins for the Rocket.

Now we are talking. Three in a row, including a great 5-1 show against second place Cleveland in their division. Lindgren with 31 saves on 32 shots. Goals by Alain, Evans (2), Scherbak and Vejdemo. The young prospects were getting it tonight.
Sweet mitts Scherbak.

Highlights of last night’s big 5-1 win. Nice to see all five goals come from prospects 22 years old and younger.

A big 6-2 win against the rival Marlies last night. Vejdemo had two goals in the win: one was jamming it in from the crease, and the second was a nice snipe after a steal in the Marlies end. Have a peek:

You might have noticed me posting a few things/highlights involving both Evans and Vejdemo lately. Both young centres are getting some extra ice time due to injuries and call-ups, so they are getting a bit more opportunities. Both are taking advantage of it in their rookie seasons, under the watchful and intense eye of coach Joel Bouchard.
Evans has a nice run going with 8 points (4g 4a) in his last eight games.
Vejdemo has a nice four game points streak going with 6 points (3g 3a) in his last four games.
When you also look at the decent start that Fleury has had (although he is out with a minor injury right now), the three young prospects seem to be the three to watch in Laval right now. I wish I could also include McCarron in that bunch, but he needs to get some more points going again or else he could end up just fading off in the distance. I don't see either forward being a big impactful guy in the NHL, but at least they are trending in the direction that should get them some NHL games in at some point and likely some decent auditions. They are both young and still adapting to their first (North American) pro season.

I would also like to see Sherbak become the second coming of Ovechkin. I would also like a date with Tina Fey. Not gonna happen!

It is nice to see Evans and Vejdemo starting to figure things out. They may still be long shots ever to make a regular mark in the NHL but they are prospects of interest, whereas the Rocket like every team in the AHL have plenty of guys that are not actually NHL prospects.

Marc Dumont had a good article in the Athletic on this, but at the heart of the story was how the Rocket have been leading the AHL in shot differential but just not getting the results until recently.

Laval’s lineup has been gutted a fair bit right now.
Agostino, Chaput and Kulak are all called up. They were all top line or top pairing guys. Fleury is injured, but should return soonish. Olofsson is done for a long time. They have been calling up a number of the guys that were in the ECHL to replace the holes.
Good luck Bouchard in the short term! That is not a pretty lineup right now.

The Rocket, with their depleted lineup, lost a pair this weekend to Charlotte. 4-2 on Saturday and 3-1 yesterday. McCarron scored the only goal yesterday, only his third of the season. It was a good effort though.

It is too bad for Bouchard and the boys that so many important guys from the Rocket have been called up. It looks like it will be an uphill struggle for Laval to stay within striking distance in the playoff hunt.
