Like what I'm seeing from Romanov vs the Czechs tonight. It hasn't led to any points, but he makes the right choice a lot - even under pressure. Two very big hits. He hits like Emelin, but has Subban-like footwork. Ferraro singing his praises.

Sportsnet did during the CAN-RUS super series.

The cynic in me says that certain NHL coaches will coach that mentality out of him, but if he can play that way for the Russian team ... He's not currently getting first PP unit time either.

Don’t forget that Bragin tends to always favour 19 year olds on this team. Also, he made the top team in the KHL as an 18 year old. I like his predatory instinct in defending the zone. Watch him track a forward entering the zone. Fleury does that too. He has a good shot. I need to see a better first pass. He is very conservative on his boards dumps. Time can help. A lot of coaches love the safe play.

Poehling with a solid game tonight. 1+2 so far in the lopsided game.

Watching TSN and Bobby Mac talking about the Swiss game. Apparently, Coach Tim Hunter went around to every player and asked them how they thought they played and how they thought the team played. A real no nonsense guy. He also sat Veleno and Lafreniere for the whole third and they were barely cracked the TOI chart. I heard a previous interview with Tim where he really credits Dom (our assistant Dominic Ducharme) for teaching him patience and other attributes for the time as his Team Canada assistant. Josh Brook is in good hands with his club coach!!
Suzuki had a good game from my seat. He created chances almost every shift. He also took a lot of faceoffs. This team trusts him so far. I really value watching a player live. I watch his whole shift, not just when he is on camera. A much better picture of his play than just highlights.

He also clean won a draw back for the first USA goal.

He also clean won a draw back for the first USA goal. That was a text book faceoff win to set up a shot. A set play, executed to perfection.

Poehling came to play the third tonight. What a game.
Defensively sound the first two periods, then woke his team up offensively single handedly in the third.
Now tied for the WJC scoring lead.

This was just a nuts performance. His team was sleepwalking and down 4-0 in the third. Poehling scored three to tie it up. Sweden did prevail in OT, likely deservingly so. Nice two on one with a great finish by Boqvist.
Maybe the best Hab prospect WJC single game performance. Amazing. His St Cloud State coach wants him to shoot more. He needs to get a better shot for his NHL days, but it was clicking frickin ticketdy boo at the WJC level tonight.

Great performance by Poehling...but he got an assist on the 1st goal, then scored a natural trick.

Watching Can/Rus. I’m disappointed Hunter isn’t using Brook more. He’s been very strong. Bouchard and Dobson OTOH have left me wanting.
Brook’s transition game has been excellent. He’s impressing me a lot

Russia takes a 2-1 lead. Phillips, left D, didn’t read the speed well and played it badly. Reminded me of a Craig Rivet play against Sundin years ago. It was utterly predictable and the hockey sense wasn’t there.
This is perhaps where missing McIsaac has hurt Canada.
A turnover by Bouchard. Not pleased with him. Play Brook more, Hunter.

Once Mitchell was beaten wide, it was up to Bouchard or Glass to close on Shen. I do not like Bouchard’s play in his own zone.
Romanov with the only assist on that go ahead goal.

Don’t mind losing at all in the round robin. It always gives the team much more incentive in the knockout stage. When Canada has beaten the US in the early stage they’ve lost to them when it counted. Not having McIsaac might’ve thrown off the chemistry on a defense pair and McIsaac was playing well.
C’est la vie. Just don’t lose any more games, fellas.

Agree NWT. some of his exit passes have been just off, making it hard for the receiver to go with speed. Brook’s passes have been great. Hunter really should adjust the minutes. The 4th line didn’t get much ice, from what I saw. Is that right?

US Finland next! Go Jesse! Go Ryan!
Not sure which team matches up better for Canada. The US worries me more. Also we list to Finland in the Friendly, which gives us incentive.

Yup, second straight game with three prospects playing. Cayden Primeau getting the start in this big game.

The Swedish team is battling a bad bug right now. They played with only 10 forwards and five defensemen, including Olofsson playing some defence today due to their depleted lineup. Hopefully they get those guys back for the quarter final game.

Ylönen hit the post mid way through the third, then got a nice tip to get Finland’s only goal and break Primeau’s shutout bid. Poehling had a nice power drive to the net with 3 minutes to play that drew a penalty. He also managed a shot on net as he was flying through the air. He had a great preliminary round.
All three of our prospects (Ylönen, Poehling and Primeau) figured in the game tonight.
Canada plays Finland on Wednesday in the quarter finals.

Poehling’s goal last night against the Finns.
And Ylönen’s tip against Primeau and the Americans. He had some nice puck possession play earlier in the shift as the Finns did have a very good shift leading to the goal.
Primeau was very solid in net. I would think the Primeau versus Finland >> Keyser versus Sweden. I would expect that Primeau would get the start in the Quarters.

A pretty cool snapshot in time for a couple of our prospects who have really had a great preliminary round. Romanov also has not been on the ice for a goal against, all while playing on his off-side.
