Many of those goalies have been hot at the right time. I've seen superb goaltending from all of them in these playoffs. Binnington's up for the Calder. And Bishop & Lehner are up for the Vezina. That still boggles my mind.

It's the Price one gets for being the perennial MVP...obvious both IN and OUT of the lineup. He was likely going to get a huge amount even if traded....but how could Berg let his meal ticket go? Too bad, for whatever reasons, that Berg has been unable in seven years to build/develop a winner during Price's prime.

Bob's gonna get that kind of money on the open market easily. Grubauer is playing other worldly at the moment. Bishop has had his ups and downs. Look at Murray in Pittsburgh. After stealing the net from MAF out of nowhere, he's now on thin ice. There are lots of goalies who have one good year here and there. Some only have the one good year. Price has been largely consistent in his stature within the league. That's why he's paid what he's paid.

I may be wrong, but I highly doubt Bobrovsky finds a payday of 10+. The roster architecture logic that predominates around of the league does not favour the Russian, no matter that his career numbers are Price-like and the two Vezinas and the outstanding playoff run he is on right now.
I know a guy through my son's hockey who worked for the Blue Jackets for 15 years and he remains close to a lot of people in that organization and he contends that Columbus would not go above a $50 million contract (they tried 5 x 9 and 6 x 8.5) for the star goalie and would not pay July 1 signing bonuses. Apparently the dialogue shut down almost immediately because Bobrovsky and his agent were furious. Well, I guess when the free agency period opens we will know la verdad de la milanesa so to speak.

I would have preferred an all Canadian final, (except that would involve the Leafs this year), just to spite Bettman. He is a truly evil person. The pushback on the concussion issue leaves no doubt he has no conscience. Instead of convincing the owners they should just pay up (which should be the cheaper solution in the long run), he's fighting it tooth and nail (perhaps on the direction of Jacobs et al). Nonetheless, I hope the courts grant the players a Billion dollar settlement and charge Jacobs with half of it. Gary Bettman is merely the front guy/talking head for the NHL Board of Governors ... from what I've read, they run the league, not Bettman ... if there are any changes to the league whatsoever, they have a say in it ... if it involves changing rules or standards I understand the NHLPA also has a say, too ... see " what does the NHLPA do?" (conditions of employment) ... if this is so, then I suspect both the NHL BoG and the NHLPA may be online with his comments ... Cheers. That's usually the case, Dis. The Commmish is the guy paid to take the heat for the owners' decisions. It still doesn't make Bettman any more likeable. I'd have great trouble acting against my conscience, but I guess if the alternative is losing your job and your $5MM salary (or whatever it is), I might grit my teeth and spout the party line too. After a year or two of that salary though, I'd be set and then, who cares?

Your guy has to get hot at the right time and unfortunately when there are 16 teams involved, there's a 100% chance that 2 or 3 goalies are going to get hot, but which ones? There was a really good statistical assessment of goaltending this past year, in the Athletic, I think. The considered not only GAA and save %, but shot quality, games played etc. Interesting that none of the goalies up for the Vezina finished in the top 3, though Vasilevsky might have been in the top 5. It was a coin flip between the top 5, I believe, but Price was one of them and considered to have had the best year. That surprised me, but when I think back on some of the saves he made in low scoring games, I may agree with that sentiment. And he certainly didn't have the support that other teams gave their goalies. .

I have the same viewpoint this guy you know has. I think teams are reluctant to pay that kind of money for a goalie. Berg didn't have any immediate replacements and he's infatuated with Carey, so opened the vault, but there was a lot of discussion on the board before that contract was signed and I don't thank anyone was in the $10.5MM range. Some of us, (like me) wouldn't pay more than $8MM I think, or whatever it is that Lundquist was earning. Maybe a bit more because the CAP had gone up, but ideally you want a replacement ready, so that you don't have that Damocles sword in play. Whatever. Can't turn the clock back and we're stuck with that contract. Price should provide some value for most of those years, though. Weber's contract worries me more than Price's because Price could be worth that in any given year, but I don't think Weber's worth $8MM right now and the end of last season didn't look promising.

Year of the wild cards. Carolina Colorado Columbus Dallas all making strong showings. It'll just reinforce Bergs view that all you have to do is eke into the playoffs and anything can happen. Habs finished with more points than Colorado and Dallas i believe

What is it with Carolina and winning in the playoffs? They don't get there often, but when they do...

For a city/state that does not seem to support the team all that well unless they are in the playoffs and making a run, it is ironic that the Canes have had more success in the 21st century than the Montreal Canadiens.

Justin Williams won't make the Hall of Fame numbers-wise, but he's had his share of being playoff-clutch.

Justin Williams won't make the Hall of Fame numbers-wise, but he's had his share of being playoff-clutch. I'd like to throw a clutch at his stupid face. Just our luck that all 4 officials missed that high stick on Koivu. At the very least, we would've had a 4:00 PP. Not sure of the score at that time, but it occurred with 15:06 left in the second period of Game 3. We lost 2-1 in OT....and would score only 4 more goals in losing the next 3 games. ---------------- Looking back at that 2005-06 season, Carolina WAS the better regular season team, finishing with 112 pts....19 more than the Habs. They had a +34 goal-differential....while we were -3. Our top 4 point producers were Kovalev (65 pts.), Koivu (62), Ryder (55), and Ribeiro (51)...whereas the Canes' top 4 were Staal (100), Williams (76), Stillman (76), Brind'Amour (70). We were clear underdogs heading into that series. Game 1. Gerber was brutal. 6-1 final. Game 2. Another brutal beginning from Gerber. I think it was 3-0 early. Enter rookie, Cam Ward, and we needed double OT before Ryder ended it 6-5. We had outscored them 12-6 in bringing a 2-0 lead back to Montreal. No doubt Koivu would've made a difference. Huet played very well, too....but only 5 goals in 4 games will do ANY team in. Ward was on his way to the Conn Smythe.

His save % for those playoffs was .882. That's not great, even at a higher scoring time. Despite what you say, the fact was we were up 2 games with the next two at home. Koivu would have proven problematic for the Canes. Matchups became much easier with him out. The Canes were also fortunate that an Oiler team which had come together lost their goaltender Roloson, just before playing the Canes. Carolina had a very large inventory of horse shoes that season.

I'll bet his save pct. against us in Games 3, 4, 5, and 6 was higher than that. The Canes also got breaks vs. the Sabres in Round 3. Buffalo's blue line was decimated by injuries...and they still took Carolina to 7 games, only to have a puck-over-the-glass penalty bite them. Carolina had a lot of "anything can happen" work their way, for sure.

McAvoy rises up into a blindside hit...and gets Anderson in the jaw with his shoulder. Anderson stayed down for a bit, no doubt stunned.....
Sutherland's call: 2:00 for an illegal check to the head.
Only for the Bruins....
They HAVE to go to video review for those calls. Something like that should not equate to a petty trip.
EDIT--2nd Intermission.
HRUDEY: McAvoy will likely be suspended.

Sutherland shouldn't get another game in the playoffs.

Don't say that, BC. It would be nauseating, for sure.
Credit where credit is due. I have never rated Rask very much in clutch situations and probably said so. But this season the very well-rested Finn has really stood tall in the playoffs. It could certainly be argued that Toronto was the better team five on five by a decent margin and Rask was making the harder saves in that series. Likewise, Columbus has probably carried the play in this series by a margin and Rask is playing elite.
How about the Bruins potentially catching another disciplinary break on that McAvoy hit? It looked like he kept the elbow down but the shoulder caught Anderson's head and it did not really look like Anderson lowered his head after McAvoy committed to the hit. Basically, I think what is damning about it is that the Bruin cannot say well todo pasa I wasn't even looking for that guy, a hockey play gone wrong just fell in my lap. McAvoy is going to be suspended (or at least should be) because he was like a heat seeking missile looking for (potential) trouble there and he found it.

If the Bruins close it out tonight, I wonder if the NHL officials will have to issue another "apology"....
A 5:00 major, down 1-0, would've done wonders to start the third period.
Anderson wasn't bleeding....and he skated off under his own steam. If that outcome influenced the call, it shouldn't have.
It was a hit to the head....Anderson could still be concussed or whiplashed.
