I thought I was out...but they keep pullin' me back in.... Yesterday, Ron MacLean referred to Bobby Orr as "Don Cherry's star pupil." Yep, after winning the Calder, 7 Norris, 3 Hart, 1 Art Ross, and 2 Conn Smythe trophies, Orr sure learned a lot during his final 93 games as a Bruin.

Watching full highlights now. Mrazek leaving huge rebounds; didn't do himself any favours. Don't know why he was left in after the second period.

Could be Carolina’s “mrazek” has worn off? Wonder if they’ll go to McElhinney for Game 3.

Many narratives have a way of dismissing/omitting/twisting/denying facts that would harm them, if admitted. They can't stop now. Cherry's playoff record with Bobby? 0 wins. 3 losses. 1st round exit vs. Chicago. I wonder who he blames for that?

I guess sometimes ya just gotta accept reality.
and that when you make your SC predictions let reality rule rather than just picking against the team you don't like because you don't want them to win.

They looked to be in control in Game 1, and because of that missed opportunity...there's this. Kind of like Tampa's missed opportunity in Game 1 against the Blue Jackets. What a wild playoffs.

You're right. In my experience, hoping for a team to lose isn't really cheering. It's negative cheering. There's no elation as when a team you support wins. It's just relief & there's not much enjoyment in that.

Rask shut the door in the first period. Some say he’s in the running for the Smythe. Boston weathered that storm and methodically played their game for the last 40 minutes—repelling several Carolina PPs along the way. Aggressive PK.
The hurricane has pretty much dissipated.

This is what happens. Eventually the cream rises to the top. People always spout the theory that "just make the playoffs and anything can happen" as if that's a plausible path to a Cup. It's not and never has been. You get years like this where the "best" team like Tampa gets bounced, upsets all over the place, but at the end of the day the winner is usually one of the best regular season teams. Nobody remembers or cares who comes in 2nd, much less who made it to the conference finals.
When it comes to who wins the Cup, the regular season matters. It always has.

TSN talking about how Williams isn't "looking like himself." I don't know. If you've lost your cool for consecutive games, at what point is it no longer uncharacteristic and instead what happens when you face adversity?

Last night it just looked like Williams was trying to hard to be physical. I have no idea but I kind of doubt that Krug was chirping him. It seems like all of those Williams-Krug run-ins were more circumstantial than anything. Boston's d-men have had success in the series transitioning the puck quickly so Carolina must have wanted to be faster and harder on the forecheck but Williams is not fast and he forgot that Krug is like 175 cm.

Sharks get another play going their way. There was a hand pass that wasn't called that lead to Karlsson's OT winner...
Could that play not be reviewed? There was no coach's challenge.

From what the announcers said, it's probable that none of the refs saw it and that kind of play is not reviewable. The mistake the refs made in the Sharks/Vegas series, where they made a call without seeing what actually happened, continues to haunt these playoffs. Can't blame them, but that's twice the Sharks have had that sort of help, from opposite sides of the same coin.

From Sportsnet.
=====================================================
Erik Karlsson scored 5:23 into overtime after receiving a pass from Gustav Nyquist. The only problem is Nyquist only had the puck because he was the recipient of a blatant hand pass from Timo Meier — both players were awarded assists on the goal.
All four officials missed the call and since it’s not a reviewable or challengeable play, the Sharks left the ice with the 5-4 victory.
Goalie Jordan Binnington knew right away it was a hand pass, as did the other Blues on the ice. The officials convened by the penalty boxes to discuss what had just occurred but since there was nothing within the rulebook that could overturn the goal, it stood and the game ended.
Blues players yelled and slammed their sticks against the boards and glass, while fans rained down boos and debris as the referees and linesmen were escorted off the ice.
“I didn’t really get an explanation other than I guess there’s a different set of rules for two different teams so I’m sure they’ll lose some sleep tonight after looking at it,” Blues captain Alex Pietrangelo told reporters at Enterprise Center.
======================================================
If the NHL wants the integrity of getting goals "right", then the hand pass MUST be included as a reviewable/challengeable element, to go along with a stick above the crossbar, offsides, kicking motion, etc.
As it is now, such a goal could win the Cup and sour an entire season. No excuse for playoff blindness from the officials. They have the tech...use it!

Doesn't really get more blatant. It even looks like Nyquist hesitates before playing the puck, because he knows it's a hand pass.

The only explanation I can think of is that they thought it went off the Blues player before the Sharks played the puck.

How Marchand keeps getting away with the crap he does, without season long suspensions, fits right in with the management of the NHL. If they had competition of any kind, they'd become extinct.

The only explanation I can think of is that they thought it went off the Blues player before the Sharks played the puck. That wouldn't matter. 79.1 Hand Pass - A player shall be permitted to stop or “bat” a puck in the air with his open hand, or push it along the ice with his hand, and the play shall not be stopped unless, in the opinion of the on-ice officials, he has directed the puck to a teammate, or has allowed his team to gain an advantage, and subsequently possession and control of the puck is obtained by a player of the offending team, either directly or deflected off any player or official.

After watching the video, it looked less like a hand or shovel pass and more of an attempt by Meier to knock the puck down with his hands to keep it alive. Nyquist isn't even in the picture when Meier bats the puck down and I don't think he was trying to make a direct pass as much as he was trying to keep the puck in play in front of the net. Nyquist just happened to be in the right spot to jump on the loose puck and make the pass to Karlsson.
Still, the refs should have whistled the play dead. Meier clearly used his hands to make a play with the puck and he was in no position to play it to himself at that point.
Of course Blues fans are pissed, but it wasn't so blatant.

Yep. Intent doesn't matter on a gloved puck. Players don't "intend" to go offside--many times they're trying to stay ONside--yet they review it to the millimetre to overturn an ensuing goal.
Like an offside, a gloved puck to a teammate outside of the defensive zone is supposed to blow the play dead. Same with a puck high-sticked to yourself or a teammate. Both should be added to the Review/Challenge list.

I’m shocked Carolina got as far as they did with Peter Mrazek and Curtis McElhinney in goal.
