McShane with two goals and an assist. The Gens did lose 5-4 in a shootout though to Kingston.

A pair of goals for Hillis last night. He is normally the set up man for Gogalev, so nice to see him pot a pair.

At the start of the season, when Olofsson (the forward) was struggling yet again to get points, the questions about his offensive upside reared their ugly head again after last season in the SHL and even at the WJC against age peers. Fast forward to now, where his assist last night was his 9th point in his last 11 games. He was playing well in the offensive zone and creating chances, but was not able to generate points or score goals. The offensive confidence seems to be back and in great timing with him leaving soon to join the WJC team.

Not sure if Fonstad does anything well enough to carve out a decent NHL career, but he is playing well with Everett. He willing l be one of the guys the Habs will have to make a decision on this summer in terms of an ELC or not. With more prospects and only so many contracts, not everyone will get signed.

Hillis gets a hat trick...of assists. His bread and butter. Did I mention this guy is very defensively responsible?

This weekend there will be a number of prospects on TV, most of whom folks do not get to see a whole lot:
Friday December 13th 9:00pm ET Colorado College vs Denver (Stapley) TSN2
Saturday December 14th 2:00pm ET Dartmouth vs Northeastern (Harris, Struble) TSN3
Sunday December 15th TBA Team USA (Pitlick) at the WJAC - either 2:00pm ET Bronze game or 7:00pm ET Gold medal game - I will update a message on this thread once the semis are complete on Saturday and we know when the USA team is playing

Reminder that Struble and Harris are on TSN3 this afternoon.
The USA went undefeated in the round robin of the WJAC. Semis are today. Looks pretty good they will be playing for gold on Sunday at 7:00 pm, but will confirm by end of day. A chance to see speedy Pitlick, who has been a bit quiet offensively so far.
RHP had 2g 1a and Houde had a goal last night for Chicoutimi. They are already a top ranked team in the QMJHL, but they sent three huge signals to the league that they are going all-in this year. They acquired forwards Felix Bibeau (overager won the Memorial Cup with RHP last year), Rafael Lavoie (Habs were often linked to him in last year mock drafts), and Dawson Mercer (a kid I really like in the first round for 2020 draft). Trades will be finalized after the WJC. For a team who relied on RHP and Houde to carry their offence, their attack just got incredibly more dangerous and deep.
Hillis had two assists last night.
Fonstad assisted on one of Everett’s two goals last night.
Across the pond, Norlinder had an assist with Modo. He played over 23 minutes and led the team with 35 shifts. The coaches do have confidence in and like this young man. I am sure SHL teams will be lining up to sign him for next season. Playing in that top league would be great for his development. So would Laval, but no real need to rush him as he is still only 19 and getting good experience. I would say the same for Romanov, but he is playing a lot less ice time in the tougher KHL and some Russian players are notoriously hard to get over. Berg seems to be quite aggressive in trying to sign Romanov earlier than later. KHL will have a cap next year, so CSKA won’t have unlimited bucks to throw at a then 20 year old defender as they have lots of other profile guys who will eat that cap up.

Harris' last game before joining Team USA was on Saturday, and he netted two assists in the game. He is showing good vision in his passes to an awaiting teammate at the side of the net in both cases. He has now matched his last season's points total already.

It was a Habs' Prospect Derby last night as Guelph (Hillis) took on Oshawa (McShane). McShane got the last laugh on both fronts, as he went 1+1 on the night to Hillis' 1 assist, but more importantly, Oshawa won the game 5-2.
Here is McShane's goal and he scores and he flies across the ice. That is his 12th of the season.

Not sure what is cooler, McNiven leading the ECHL in goalie stats or his uniform. If not for a glut of goalies, he should be in the AHL.

Contract news about Norlinder, not WJC news. He needs to play in the SHL against top competition to help him grow and develop.

Ylonen with the shootout winner yesterday. Points have been hard to come by as he has moved down the lineup and his team is downright bad more often than not. It sure would be nice to see him moved to a contender.

He is quietly putting up nice points on the west coast. I will see him and Fairbrother live tomorrow afternoon. Hillis is also quietly having a nice bounce back season. Good to see some success from our second (or third based on your definition) tier prospects.

Pitlick with two apples in his USHL game last night. He has 6 points in his 6 games since his trade to Muskegon. A bit of an odd move as it was a trade between two teams that were not in a playoff position. Muskegon has been able to move up to 6th spot in their conference, so that would be the last playoff spot. They still are a team playing below 500 hockey though. It is always hard to get a read on prospects playing on poor teams. It will be much more telling once he moves to the NCAA next season. The good news was that he was picked to be part of Team USA at the World Junior A Challenge, albeit in a bottom six role.
Just sprinkling in some news on a lesser known guy. Nice give and go in the video, although at higher levels of hockey most guys in the puck carrier position would likely shoot. The kid started looking pass and the goalie adjusted, which made the give and go the right and best option once Pitlick got the puck.

Fonstad came into yesterday afternoon's game against the Oil Kings leading the WHL in assists, and all he did was add to his totals with two more in the game. It was my first time seeing him live with his new team and my first time seeing Fairbrother live.
It is always hard to properly scout players when you are also invested in watching the game. It was a battle between the #1 and #3 teams in the WHL, so it was a good game on paper. It did not disappoint on the ice either. A bit of a back and forth game, with lots of shots and chances (45-37 shots in favour of Edmonton). In the end, regulation settled nothing. Neither did overtime, although the Oil Kings did have a goal called back for a high stick. The Oil Kings prevailed in the shootout with two beauty goals to one.
Fonstad is the Silvertips top line LW. He plays in all situations, 5 on 5, top PP unit, and also on the PK. He and his line did seem to generate a fair bit all game. They were quite engaged and effective. He is a playmaker first, as he does have a pretty good vision and hockey sense. He did manage to have a season high 6 shots on net yesterday, although I am not sure I would categorize any as dangerous shots. For all his good traits of generating play and being an effective player in both ends of the ice, he does have his flaws (fifth rounder after all). He is small, and does get knocked off the puck quite easily. He does not have a big frame, so this issue will be around for a while. He also is an average skater in keeping up with the play, but he definitely does not have separation speed. When you combine this with him being undersized, this still keeps him a bubble player to get signed to his ELC by the summer. The number of other prospects up for ELCs does not help either. I like Fonstad, he is a smart player. I still just wonder about his NHL upside.
On to Fairbrother. Unlike Fonstad whom I have seen a lot more, this is/was my only viewing of Fairbrother. So I take a one game sample with a huge shovel of salt. He plays on the second pairing, and also sees time on the PK and the second PP unit. He played both sides during the game, and even swapped up mid shift depending on the shift change by his partner and who came on the ice. He is definitely a defensive first guy, although he does have reasonable mobility. He battles on the boards and closes the gap. His transition play is definitely from pass first or a chip play rather than carrying the puck. I did see some plays of his in the offensive zone, but mainly just some quick wrister on net rather than his patented big slapper. He ended up the game without any points. He seems "fine" enough, but he has a late birthday and could play in the AHL next season. I am not sure I see a guy ready to make the jump quite yet. I compare to Fleury (also a late birthday and a third round pick), and Fleury was more developed at the same point in his WHL career once he moved to Regina.
Last June I wanted Dorofeyev with this pick...I still feel the same way. Fairbrother is definitely a defensively-sound guy right now, it is a matter of how he develops other parts of his game as to what his upside eventually looks like.

A bunch of guys with single points last night, but the following had multiple point nights:
Fonstad 2 assists (yawn) RHP 1 goal one assist Ylönen 2 goals (his team had an offensive explosion of 4 goals) Hillis 2 goals 2 assists
On Ylönen’s goal, where was the second D?

Ylönen added a nice assist today, for his third point in his last two games. Good puck possession, followed by a shot on net that was tipped for the goal.

A few guys with multiple point nights last night:
Both Stapley and Pitlick had two assists.
Fonstad added to his league leading assist total with an assist and also added the GWG.
Also, Hillis had one assist, but left the game early after an early second period slashing major and game misconduct. The league could very well add some supplemental discipline and give him a few nights off. That would be a big loss for Guelph as Hillis and Gogolev drive that team’s offence.
RHP had the GWG in his game.

Khisamutdinov scores his first KHL goal today, on the PP. Big body in front of the net. He has done well at the VHL level and looks too good to stay in the second league, so nice to see him pot a goal in the KHL as he has been looking for that first of the season for a while now.
