He started his pre-draft year with Modo' U18 team and then played the bulk of the season with their J20 team, but only as a #4/5 defender. He also had not played on any of the national teams, so he did not have any of that exposure that a lot of his age peers did. He really had not got his whole game together and was undersized physically. His game really took off last year, and he split it between Modo's mens' team in the Allsvenskan and then he returned to his J20 team for the playoffs and was the league playoff MVP. His skating really hit a new level. He also had a later growth spurt, but he still needs to grow into his body to handle the physical rigours of defending against men. His skating, vision and hockey IQ are top notch. That is why I was very high on him even though he had passed through one draft. And all I was going on was scouting reports and highlights, but he sounded like exactly the right type of LHD that we should be drafting. Hi, Any idea why we traded out 2nd second rounder for a 3rd and 5th? Was it really worth it to have another 5th round pick and trading down x number of spots? MB seems to like to trade down to accumulate more picks. This year, at 50, there were some good and talented players left. Time will tell if our two players are better than say a Nick Robertson or one of the talented defenders still available. In the post-draft interview, you could tell that TT was not enamoured at moving that pick down (when asked about it, he said "you have to ask Marc about that"). Berg has done this a number of times over the last number of drafts. With 12 stinking picks next year in Montreal, I sure hope he reverses his trend and bundles some to try and move up. We only have 50 contracts and now have lots of guys drafted due to all the picks over the last few years. I love following the progress of our prospects, so it is awesome as there are some good players amongst them. But, I would rather have a couple fewer picks and get guys with much higher chances of being a successful NHLer.

Was that 3 round pick Norlinder? That may even be who Timmins wanted earlier anyway and if so, dodged a bullet there. You’d hope Berg would only trade down if there were a lot of guys left in that tier. I prefer quality over quantity if I can’t gave both. Beg really does like quantity. No elites on the Habs but plenty of solid players.

If you were drafting where Timmins selected, who were your picks in this past draft? Trying to follow my list and who would have been available, it might have looked something like this. R1-15: Cole Caufield. My two BPAs here were Caufield and Krebs. The elite goal scoring wins out. R2-46: Vladislav Kolyachonok. LD Flint/Belarus. An established LD, and I wanted a LD here. I had Struble on my list, but much lower due to rawness and weaker competition. R2-50: I would have been miffed too trading here. There were great options left. R3-64: Pavel Dorofeyev or Norlinder (I had Norlinder on my list for 77 when we only had one 3rd round pick). R3-77: Dorofeyev for sure. Too much talent at this point of the draft. Maybe Mikko Kokkonen if I wanted another LD or Alex Beaucage if I wanted a solid local pick. R5-126/131/138: Three of these guys on my list. Patrick Moynihan RW, Rhett Pitlick LW, Amy Raty RW, Albert Lychkasen RD. I also wanted a goalie this draft, so maybe a proven guy like Taylor Gauthier here too. And so on... Right on, Caufield would been mine. Struble also. The further down we go that less I speculated as no time to follow prospects. Norlinder seemed to be the guy Timmins wanted. Fairbrother also. I hope he knows what he is doing because we passed on considerable talent.

Another goal for Ylonen today. His third of the season. He also had a 1+1 game yesterday.

Nifty back hand pass by McShane. Three apples last night. He now has 10 points and is 12th in OHL scoring.

Samuel Houde is a prospect that I don’t pay much attention to, but he already has 4 goals and 7 points after 6 games. This is a really nice goal. He also wears on of the A’s for his team, supporting his captain and fellow Habs prospect Rafaël Harvey-Pinard.

Leguerrie, Fairbrother and McShane all with an assist on Sunday Funday. Good news is Fairbrother is cleared to play after missing some rookie camp and the start of the season.

Another goal from Norlinder. With his smooth skating, he is not afraid to jump into the play.
Ylönen also scored in his Champions League match.

Okay, M. Houde, you are making me pay attention. I guess I should watch a Chicoutimi game or two...the bonus being that team has two of our prospects.
Houde is #88. RHP is #11.

Another goal from Norlinder. With his smooth skating, he is not afraid to jump into the play. Ylönen also scored in his Champions League match. It can be such a simple game at times. If you watch Norlinder as he enters the zone, he simply skates into open ice and begorrah!, the puck ends up there. Open space tends to be where the opposing team should have been (which is why it's open....duh).

Here is Caufield’s first NCAA goal. Ironically against his ex teammate Spencer Knight who knew what was coming. Just not good enough!

5 points in two games for Caufield this weekend. Not to be outdone, 6 points in two games for Fonzie, Cole Fonstad.
In other news, Struble still not playing due to lingering groin injury.

Another 2 goals and an assist for Caufield. Good opening weekend for the kid. Slick hands on that one. Those moves made me think of Joe Mullen. Going to be big part of our future

Fonstad traded and joins fellow prospect Gianni. A bit surprised by this move.

Caufield leaving a pretty good first impression with his opening weekend at Wisconsin. Now if Struble can just get that groin sorted so he can make his college debut as well.

Habs EOTP caught up with Norlinder’s defensive partner recently, NHL veteran Tobias Enstrom, who had this to say about the 19 year old Habs’ prospect.

Be very interesting to see if they can get Romanov over for next year and whether Caufield stays at Wisconsin.

Be very interesting to see if they can get Romanov over for next year and whether Caufield stays at Wisconsin. Lots of social media buzz about Romanov and what could happen next season. Heck, it even made it on Hockey Insider on TSN. CSKA can definitely win the money war compare to an NHL ELC.

This sounds ominous to me. You'd have to think that through regular contact with the player they'd have a good idea of what his intentions are. If Bergevin feels the need to personally fly over there to give him some re-aassurances then you would have to think Romanov is seriously considering staying in Russia. I don't think it's a question of playing hard-to-get, as the CBA pretty much defines the max Bergevin can give him anyways. So they can't just outbid the KHL for him.

After Caufield's exciting stats line in his opening weekend, it is easy to forget that he is still just an 18 year old with lots to learn in the NCAA, let alone in pro hockey. It is great that he is with a top-notch coach in Tony Granato in Wisconsin (he was also the USA Olympic head coach in 2018). Good observation here by Habs' prospect watcher and writer, David St Louis.

Another piece on Norlinder, including his WJC aspirations. I would imagine that he really needs to see himself on the roster for that Four Nations Tournament on November 8-10.
