Two assists for Norlinder today. On the second one, he draws a few defenders to him and finds his open man. #6.

Thanks WD. I think it's fair to say the piece highlights more than just Cole. The amateur scouting staff - lead by Timmins and Churla - have done an excellent job in the last 3 drafts.

Just some fun facts about a couple of my favourite prospects:
Norlinder has 6 goals, which leads the Allsvenskan in goals by a defender.
Caufield’s 7 goals leads the NCAA.

Cole Caufield and Roman Ahcan Facilitate Fast Start for WisconsinWisconsin, it would appear, is finally back. After losing seasons in four of the last five years, the Badgers once again appear to be one of the top teams in the country, currently ranked 7th in national polls. This wasn’t unexpected, as their stockpile of blue chip NHL prospects finally began to matriculate to campus, but after facing a tough early-season non-conference schedule and coming out the other side with a 4-2-0 record, Wisconsin comes into Big Ten conference play this week with the on-ice product matching their hype.
Within that good start for the Badgers, there are pair of performances that I found particularly noteworthy from a statistical standpoint.
The first is of no surprise. Cole Caufield came to Madison with sky-high expectations. Caufield set a National Team Development Program record by scoring 72 goals last season, breaking the previous record of 55 goals set by Auston Matthews, before being selected 15th overall in the NHL Draft last summer. Thanks, BC. Caufield's start to the season is extremely promising. And it bears keeping in mind that NCAA hockey is not as high scoring as Canadian Junior. These are in large part young men who are physically and mentally ready to implement coaches' systems and there are not tonnes of breakdowns.
I guess that time will soon say whether Caufield makes his stay at university a short one or longer one.

Wisconsin is playing right now against Penn State. PSU is a strong, senior laden team and they jumped out to a 2-0 lead early. Caufield just helped the Badgers climb back into the game with a nice snipe where he came off the left half wall with the puck and I think the goalie thought he was eyeing the far post but the kid stopped suddenly and had his hands ready and wired it high near post.
I have not really noticed Gorniak. I think he's on the fourth line.

Olofsson with two apples today. Gaining confidence in the offensive zone.
He was also 66% on face offs. He has good numbers this year.

Really good news for the hot-hand Samuel Houde, as he is named as an injury replacement for team QMJHL for the Super Series against Russia that starts on Monday. I will post the Sportsnet broadcast schedule this weekend, closer to the start of the series. Houde has 23 points in 15 games played so far. He has been held pointless in only 1 of those 15 games.
Habs will now have one player in each of the leagues: Houde (QMJHL), McShane (OHL), and Fonstad (WHL).

I strongly suspect Timmins and Co. have added something to their scouting methodology that is working. While one can't really judge the last 2 draft years yet, Montreal's scouting seems to have hit on more guys improving better and faster since drafted than one would expect. Caufield is not one of the guys I'm using as an example. He should have been drafted higher, but others had different priorities. He wasn't exactly a difficult pick. It was either him or Krebs for me and I leaned toward Caufield because the Habs really need an elite scorer. But outside of him, the 2017 draft with Primeau and Fleury, the 2018 draft with Romanov for sure and a well progressing Ylonen, and longer shots (but all improving and impressing to some extent) Hillis, Harris, McShane, Fonstad and Stapley. Then in this last draft which is still really early, we can look at Norlinder, Fairbrother and Leguerrier. Struble hasn't played enough to get a handle on. But still, to have 3 guys besides your top pick looking like they're improving rather than stagnating, is really strong drafting. I know they added some psycho babble questionnaire in the recent past, but I don't know exactly when. There was an article on it, from an interview with Timmins. If anyone can find that, it was a good article and it may tie in the time line. If they started using it seriously after 2016, that says something. Anyway, the results the last 3 years are good and can't be attributed simply to luck, which happens to all scouting teams some year. Edit: Dr. David Scott of the University of New Brunswick. He was working for the Habs as early as February 2012 but I haven't found yet when he started with the Scouting department. There's an article from June 2018 montrealgazette.com/sports/hockey/nhl/hockey-inside-out/canadiens-refining-tools-they-use-to-assess-nhl-prospectswhich indicates prospects were completing an on line questionnaire the previous season (2017-18), so it was in use for the 2018 and 2019 drafts at least. It could even have been in use earlier, (iin 2016 Habs took Sergachev early and Mete at 100) but Habs didn't have as many picks in 2016 and 2015 as their 2nd round picks had been traded.

Struble has been quiet as he adapts to the big jump to NCAA hockey. Here is a rare highlight.
For those interested, I understand that Northeastern does stream its home games for free. Also, TSN should be releasing its NCAA tv schedule soon (if it renews - it has shown games for a number of years now) and Northeastern tends to get good airtime (TSN always seems to show the Beanpot tournament).

NOBODY took the body. What are coaches teaching? Drinking and partying? That is why I don't put much credence in these leagues.

Good little run by McNiven in the ECHL lately. If not for the logjam in Laval (Lindgren and Primeau), I expect he would look just fine being the #2 in Laval right now. It makes us wonder if the Habs will move Lindgren at some point, although the return would not likely be much at all.

It’s a sad situation when fans are more excited about prospects and the upcoming draft than about the team and current roster. I like the hard working lunchpail team. They need to constantly overachieve because of the absence of elite skill and finishers. Overachieving is not sustainable for 82 games or a 7 game series if we ever get there. Molson is hockey operations president in name only. He inherited the job. No other team would ever hire him. Good condo salesman though!

The U20 4 Nations Tournament starts in Helsinki today. 3 prospects were to take part: Olofsson and Norlinder for SWE and Romanov for RUS. Unfortunately, Olofsson has been sent home due to illness. He was practicing as the team's #1 centre prior to this.
