The early nominee for prospect of the night is Cam Hillis, who followed up last night’s 4 point game with a 3 assist game tonight.

Stapley, another one of those seventh rounders, got an assist in each of his games with Denver this weekend. That kept his point per game production going. He also scored in the shootout for the “extra” point his conference gives after a tie game.
It was a battle of the titans this weekend between perennial contender Denver and two time defending champs UMD (Minnesota Duluth). Friday’s tie and Saturday’s loss were the first blemishes on a perfect top-ranked Denver season so far. I am sure that will change some of the rankings for next week.

Here is Stapley’s goal from last night. Not great video, but he digs the puck from the corner, goes to the net, and shows great eye hand coordination to swat the puck mid-air (and legal height) into the net.

Hillis started really slowly this season. Guelph looked really terrible at the same time too. Fast forward, and he now has 24 points in his last 10 games. The captain is on a tear.

Earlier today, Romanov recorded an assist as he helped Russia beat the Czechs 5-2 in U20 4 Nations tournament action. I believe he was also wearing on of the “A’s” for this team. Russia’s WJC team will come from a mix of the guys at this tournament and some of the players currently in Canada playing in the CAN RUS super series. I would suggest that Romanov is as close to a lock as you get after last year.

The way you talk our farm system sounds stacked. I hope you are right. As we all know, there is a big jump from ripping it up in the CHL in your 19/20 year old season to carving out an NHL career. What I like is many of our most recent picks show more skill and promise than we have seen in a while. They will not all make it, but it is great to see some of these second tier prospects enjoying some success in their current environment. The difference I see with our farm system from before is the depth is much greater now and the team definitely does draft more for skill and/or mobility than before. As a result, we are seeing and will see prospects not getting ELCs just because there are not enough contracts left under the 50 limit rather than dishing them out to prospects that likely had little to no chance to make it. Back to Hillis, he had a rough year last year with some brutal injuries. His numbers were not impressive for a guy in his D+1 year. He started this year with a whimper, so it is great to see his current production take off. Guelph lost a ton of talent to graduation. They had gone all in for last year and had loaded up for one year. They are a much weaker team this year, so to see Hillis do well with a pretty weak lineup is great.

I don't have the time to follow the prospects myself. So, I rely on people like you. I hope we deal some of our depth for that star player to put us over the top. Right now I am debating are we better off adding the star forward, like a Hall. Or a #1 LD, like a Fowler. I watched Black Hawks the other night, Duncan Keith looks like he still has something left to offer a cup contender.

You are now responsible and liable for causing too much optimism in our farm system. My problem is that we have quantity, but nothing identifiable as sure fire top 3 or top 2. Caufield and Romanov are "suppose" to be that, yet, they both have a question mark until proven otherwise. What I mam really afraid off is that we become a farm system of DLR's for the NHL. Let's hope it's a stream of Danaults....

Olofsson missed the U20 4 Nations tourney due to illness, but he looks like he is feeling much better now in men’s play. Nice anticipation to pick off the pass, and nice finish. He has been getting some good assists prior to his missing a few games, so his offensive confidence may be growing. He needs this, as this season was an offensive black hole to start.

Olofsson scores again today, his second straight game with a goal (ironically his last game was two days ago in the Champions League against fellow SHL team Djurgardens).

I went to my first Salmon Arm Silverbacks game of the season on Wednesday. This would be unremarkable if not for the fact that Kieran Ruscheinski, our 7th round pick last season was playing. I didn't 'scout' him because that's too much work and I went to enjoy a hockey game, but there are always observations.
A) He didn't do much B) He's on the 3rd pairing defense on a BCHL team, albeit one in the top 3 in the league c) He's tall d) He's a good skater e) he's obviously a project because he's still in the gangly awkward stage?
In any case, I wouldn't say he's progressing in the same manner as our last two 7th round picks, Stapley and Primeau. I hope that toward the end of the season he's improved. He didn't actually touch the puck much, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad one.

I have met a lot of hockey fans, very few if any have the same like for prospects like NWT. Really good work he does

Northeastern win big 7-3 tonight, with both our guys contributing. Harris scored in his second straight game and also picked up an assist, and Struble got his first NCAA point with an assist.

Dis, you just beat me to it!! It is nice to see Pitlick getting on the WJAC team. I expect the USA team will be in the hunt for the gold as usual, so he should even get on TSN and they usually broadcast the medal games. Once I confirm the TV schedule, will post a reminder closer to the action.

Speaking of prospects on TV, here are a few games from the NCAA and CHL that feature our kids over this season that I could find:
NCAA on TSN
Friday November 29 Northeastern (Harris, Struble) vs New Hampshire 10:00am ET Friday December 13 Colorado College vs Denver (Stapley) 9:00pm ET Saturday December 14 Dartmouth vs Northeastern (Harris, Struble) 4:00pm ET
CHL on Sportsnet
Sunday November 24 Sudbury @ Oshawa (McShane) 2:00pm ET Saturday January 25 Kingston @ Oshawa (McShane) 2:00pm ET Saturday February 22 Oshawa (McShane) @ Hamilton 4:00pm ET Saturday March 14 SSM (LeGuerrier) @ London 4:00pm ET
I should also note that TSN shows lots of other NCAA games on their app and webstreaming service. You have to sign in using your cable provider sign-in to watch those games (if you have TSN as part of your cable package). They have both of Wisconsin (Caufield, Gorniak) games on Friday and Saturday night this upcoming weekend for example.

Really good work he does Thanks! I just enjoy coming here and sharing info and generating discussions about our prospects (and my views on upcoming drafts!). I have always enjoyed following junior hockey, but it definitely increased in those years/decades of mediocre Habs hockey and missed playoffs.

I think the three WJC locks are:
RUS Romanov USA Caufield SWE Olofsson
Ylonen has aged out, as he turns 20 before December 31.
Got a chance and will be guys on the bubble:
USA Harris SWE Norlinder
I expect to see Struble next year, not this year yet. The US have too much depth still on D. He is still too raw and unproven.
Dichow will play for DEN in Division 1, to try and get back up to the main event next year.
Slim to nil:
USA Pitlick - way too much better depth at forward CAN McShane and Hillis - too many other forwards for CAN that will get picked ahead

A few of our European prospects had assists today: Ylonen and Norlinder. The scariest bit of news was Norlinder getting run into the stanchion reminiscent of the Max Pacioretty hit. The good news is he got up under his own steam and also returned to the game. Tough kid, but still you never like to see anything like this.
