The Habs announced that 40 players will be attending their annual development camp this week. 8 of the 10 guys drafted this past weekend will be in attendance. Only Norlinder (injury) and Khisamutdinov won't be attending. Some interesting invites. I will dig a bit and get some info on them. For comparison purposes, the Habs signed Alexandre Alain after their 2017 camp and Joel Teasdale out of their 2018 camp. They also recently signed Finnish defender Otto Leskinen who attended the 2018 development camp as well. So, it is not outside the realm of possibility to see one or two guys getting a serious look for a contract if they perform admirably. www.nhl.com/canadiens/news/canadiens-will-hold-their-annual-development-camp-from-june-26-28/c-308030850

A few notable absentees, and for very different reasons. Ikonen is to allow him to continue his training and recovery from his latest injury at the end of last season. Romanov is actually in Montreal to meet folks and soak in the atmosphere, but because he is under contract with his KHL team he cannot participate on the ice or in training sessions.

The Habs have invited 11 try-outs to their development camp. Here are the guys with a few notes on some of the more interesting guys:
Forwards
Nicolas Guay, 20, RW, Drummondville (QMJHL) - 87 points in 64 games. I was toying with adding him to my late round draft list, but just hoped he might get an invite instead rather than drafting an over-ager (which TT did a few times anyway).
Liam Hawel, 20, C, Guelph (OHL) - 78 points in 66 games. Played at the Memorial Cup this year with Suzuki and friends. Was drafted 101th overall by Dallas in 2017, but was not signed.
Vincent Marleau, 19 (20 next month), Rouyn-Noranda (QMJHL)
Yevgeni Oksentyuk, 18, RW, Soligorsk (Belarus) - officially the most interesting guy for me. He is fast, shifty and skilled. But he is small (CC small). He led the surprise Belarussian U18 team in scoring in April and also played on their U20 team last year in the Division 1 WJC. He was just passed over this draft in his first year of eligibility.
Matthew Struthers, 19 (20 in December), C, North Bay (OHL) - passed over twice now and in his fourth year in the OHL. 81 points in 61 games. The Habs also signed him to an ATO in March and he played 5 games for the Rocket. A big centre, but a below average skater.
Defensemen
Christopher Merisier-Ortiz, 18, LD, Baie-Comeau (QMJHL)
Dylan Plouffe, 20, LD, Vancouver (WHL)
Jack York, 18 (19 in Sept), RD, Barrie/Kitchener (OHL) - passed over in the draft in his first year of eligibility (he has a late 2000 birthday). Son of Jason York.
Goalies
Gabriel Mollot-Hill, 21 (22 in August), Providence (Hockey East)
Vincent Purpura, 20, Omaha/Youngstown (USHL) and Boston Univ (Hockey East)
Alexis Shank, 19, Chicoutimi (QMJHL)

A few years ago, it was the year of the Attitude (and Berg’s presser was full of it...see what I did there?). The Habs even put “attitude” on their development camp shirts.
What is on this year’s shirts, you ask?
EARNED not entitled
Now you know lol.

I'd be thrilled of these kids understand the legacy they represent. If their teeth clench, their blood boils and their pride makes them seeth at every loss...we're in good hands.

Tons of caveats. It is June. It is summer camp. It is shinny hockey. But, big Ryan Poehling came to play. He is #25 in red and I expect he will cause some vets some fits in the fall, because he will be trying to take one of their jobs.

A glimpse into why I like Pitlick. His speed is going to cause defenders fits. He is #48 in white. He rushes up the ice, gets up and goes to the net. Struble moves the puck along the wall to Ylönen, who makes a nifty little pass out to Pitlick who buries it.
He may end up just another Will Bitten, but he was still worth a swing when TT picked him.

If you have never seen Harris play, this young man can skate and has decent hockey iq. Check out some Northeastern games on TSN next season, although that team has lost its top goalie (thanks Laval!!) and its top defender. Hopefully, Struble will be playing there as well, learning how to develop his raw skills that typically go unchecked in unstructured high school hockey. Once Struble gets some structure to his game, I think folks will start to take notice.

Did Fairbrother bring his good shot to camp, you ask?
Yuppers.

Shinny hockey is made for great skaters like Pitlick to shine. I hope to try and find a way to see some of his USHL games online next season.

Just once, I want to read that one of these rookies yelped out...... I'm taking a vets spot. too bad, so sad. Now THAT would make headlines and heat up the competition.

Fairbrother has decent mobility and uses his strength to fend of his check. He comes to town on New Year’s Day, guess I have a bit of a wait to see him live.

When are the exhibitions game going to start? And who can be in them? Will CC be able to play in them BEFORE he commits to anything else?
Rith now, I'm reserving my ooohs and ahhs for Poehling, Juulsen, Suzuki and......BargainBinz breaking out a few million to buy Romanovs contract.

Jayden Struble: "This guy is built like a linebacker, so the strength is there." This kid reminds me of my cousin at 17. Before he hit 20, he was a bipedal beast that had to walk sideways to get past door frames. Were not talking just physical size but also elite conditioning. He crushed his opponents in high school wrestling and was in the heavyweight class in collage. He went into law so he left his man-crushing days behind him. I'm really hoping this kid will get to the NHL level andt we do not have Lernout V2 on our hands. Another physical beast that is turning out to be an AHL journeyman.
