Hopefully, Julien will continue to bench KK, or we might actually have a chance to beat the Pens. Worst case scenario is a play in win, first round loss and 16th overall pick. Book it. Then the Pens get to draft Lafreniere.

Please no. Losing in the first round of the Playoffs and picking 16th would just be brutal even without the Pens drafting Lafreniere.
Let's try to be optimistic with our conspiracy theories. Perhaps the officials working the Penguins and Oilers series will be encouraged to make sure the league's two biggest stars -- Crosby and McDavid -- are not eliminated before the Playoffs even begin. Therefore, penalties called on the Habs and the Blackhawks will be abundant and those lethal power plays will have ample chances to do what they do best.

Crosby and McDavid should have Secret Service refs for their games. The ultimate in protection. Or might that be Trojans?

So, does this mean that the Habs medical staff would deem Domi ineligible to play based on current PHAC guidelines that include Diabetes as a high risk chronic condition in terms of COVID exposure? I know we talked about this before, but there are specific clauses now that add more clarity. Interesting to see where the team lands on this one.

Good questions. This requires serious risk assessment as it pertains to Domi's situation. Is there enough usuable data from North America and Europe about the outcomes for individuals under age 40 with Type 1 diabetes who have contracted the virus? I would like to believe the NHL and Montreal would tell Domi please do not participate if they saw data that suggested an individual in his situation was, for instance, 30 percent more likely to end up in an ICU.

If it's just a matter of looking at data & risks for diabetics, how does a second opinion help? There is an elevated risk or there isn't. Talking to a different doctor doesn't change the numbers.
If a player is denied the chance to play, does he just find a doctor that will say what he wants to hear?

I am not familiar with the roster size of MLS clubs. As you know, jkr, since you love futbol, a club needs close to twenty guys (11 on the pitch and 7 or 8 on the bench) when it shows up for a match. So it would require a roster of nearly 30 players to withstand the sudden disappearance of 10 guys and the MLS has always struck me as a very cost conscious league that probably does not carry a whole lot of surplus.

If a player is denied the chance to play, does he just find a doctor that will say what he wants to hear? The Athletic had this: Domi has type-1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease. At least one study in England found that type-1 diabetics have 3.5 times the odds “of dying in hospital with COVID-19 compared to those without diabetes.” Based on the wording of the clause – “substantial risk of developing a serious illness as a result of exposure to the novel coronavirus” – Domi being deemed unfit to play is at the very least a possibility. The American Diabetes Association – in its FAQ section on COVID-19 – states that while there is no evidence that people with diabetes are more susceptible to contract the virus, if they do, the risk of complications is higher, with one important caveat.“People with diabetes do face a higher chance of experiencing serious complications from COVID-19. In general, people with diabetes are more likely to experience severe symptoms and complications when infected with a virus. Your risk of getting very sick from COVID-19 is likely to be lower if your diabetes is well-managed.”Domi manages his diabetes extremely well, and he is obviously a highly conditioned professional athlete, so we will have to wait and see what happens here. Domi has stated his desire to play when hockey returns, but it appears that decision might be out of his hands. From the study itself: "... adjusting for age, sex, ethnicity, socioeconomic deprivation and region, people with Type 1 diabetes were at three and a half times the risk of in-hospital death with COVID-19, while people with Type 2 diabetes were at twice the risk, compared to people without a diagnosis of diabetes."

Thanks, BC.
I know all of the constant testing as well as playing Phase 4 in the bubble may lead guys like Domi and Kakko to think odds are nothing is going to happen.
Nevertheless, the decision to participate or not should actually be made under the assumption that individual A or Z will contract the virus.

Regarding the play-in roster, McKenzie said the player roster is capped at 31 and a club's overall contingent cannot exceed 52 individuals. Apparently players who are not eligible to play (e.g. Romanov, Ylonen) are permitted to be part of the group.
Montreal needs to be developing players for the future and I see more value in bringing those kids than some guys from the Rocket that are not really NHL prospects and are probably never going to play in the league.

The Habs should not take this whole thing seriously and I'd roll out as many of the young players as we can and let a guy like Domi stay home. Nobody should be playing at all right now, it's purely about the financial issues.
Here's the plan: 1. Lose the play in 2. Win the lottery for Lafreniere 3. Fire Bergevin immediately.

All of the previous has as much chance as mine. Between the cups, drafting Laffy, signing Hall and firing Bbinz, we might as well wish for more from Santa! Oh wait......we're playing playoff hockey in August.......

Looks like Vejdemo will be one of the odd men out due to the numbers game for training camp. Guess Evans, Dauphin and Belzile are all ahead of him on the depth chart as they are at camp already.
24 guys at Brossard so far. Still waiting to see signs of regulars like Petry, Tatar, Kulak and Domi (!).

I'm reading this thread and I'm about ready to make a phone call....
I'm about to refuse a picnic with my closest relatives, people who i love dearly, people who mean everything to me, yet it's imperative that millionaires and billionaires carry on so they can make their millions.
I'm sorry, but if they all break out, if it's a disaster, even for the habs, they wont get an ounce of sympathy from me.
Just ridiculous greed.....

I don't mind competitiveness. It has benefits to it. Greed does not and these billionaires do their best to make us think their greed is simply competitiveness. It's not. Greed is a willingness to risk other people's lives in order to improve your bottom line. What can you do with people like that?

Yup. It's insane. There's a reason I predicted about 10% chance they have to award the Cup, at the end. Imagine if in the 3d round, with 4 teams still playing, there's a minor outbreak and 3 teams have to bow out, and they award it to a team that didn't make the final. That might even have been well on its way to getting eliminated. And that's just the pure hockey side of it, how many more people will be exposed and put at risk, for this tournament ? How many healthcare resources will be used here rather than elsewhere, at a time when such resources are scarce ? I'm aware of 2 heart operations that got put off because of Covid, I'm sure Edmonton and Toronto have their own healthcare backlogs...

Hamonic is making a solid choice on account of a couple of issues. Foremost, his daughter's health with a respiratory problem. And secondarily, Hamonic does not have a contract for next season and risking Covid or any significant injury with no guarantees for 2020-21 probably weighs on his mind as well.
Luckily for Hamonic, he is much better than a mere fringe player in the league and I am sure teams will be calling in the middle of October when free agency opens.

I do not have a huge problem with this because Vejdemo does not look like much more than a fourth liner, though in fairness to him I think that his skating and defensive diligence will allow him to carve out an NHL career somewhere. The interesting side of the decision relates to Dauphin and Belzile. Belzile is an easy guy to cheer for, but he will be 29 years old next month and there is not really anything about his trajectory that suggests he can actually hold down a roster spot in the NHL. Dauphin was a nice addition to the Rocket, though his offensive tools do not seem to translate at the next level. Maybe he can stick in a fourth line role, though even that is far from a sure thing.

It would be interesting to know exactly who is brought, and who isn't. Do you bring the GM ? He doesn't actually need to be there, and maybe it's best for GM+ 3 or 4 staff to work elsewhere, rather than take up 5 spots for management. Physiotherapists ? How many ? Other medical personnel ? If someone gets mildly injured you want the right trainer. Equipment managers ? You want as few as possible, but some redundancy is needed in case you lose someone (covid, or other issues that can happen in real life). Will substitutions be allowed ? Say your 2 physiotherapists get covid or appendicitis and are sent home, can you replace them, or do you hope your "security" person has a secondary background in something useful ? So many questions for a tournament that just shouldn't be held.

Hamonic is on the bottom of top 6 and teetering out of it. Let's see how much he gets after all this.
I don't see a lot of teams lining up to pay 4 million for a 12 point 30 year old...but I could be wrong.

|
Post by folatre on Jul 11, 2020 16:40:33 GMT -5
For sure, he is not getting $4 million from anyone. But Hamonic is not old for a d-man and I could see him getting 4 years/$12 million from Winnipeg. The Jets need help on the right side and some size and toughness would help keep order in front of Hellebuyck.
PTH, you are right, the issue with forcing the Islanders' hand for a trade goes against hockey culture, at least the part of letting it get to be public. And now this decision with the Flames probably irks some people in that organization because they really need to get by the Jets or there could be a serious organizational purge on the horizon. But the NHL would likely through informal communication channels discourage clubs from locking him out of the league because the last thing the NHL needs in the times we are living is to give the impression that a guy like Hamonic who does a lot to help First Nations and Metis kids is being discriminated against.

Post by UberCranky on Jul 11, 2020 17:15:59 GMT -5
The league wont "discriminate", it will as simple as GMs offering 2 million for 4 years.
Through my career as manager, it was rare that i fired outright anyone i didn't want on my team, i just waited for a downturn and laid them off. Never had anyone have enough to make a case.
No doubt that given that Hamonic has gone public, he will do so again, but he hardly has a leg to stand on as a 12 point player in his 30's. "Youth movement" is a generic comeback and hard to argue. Not that the triggered hystericals wont make it an issue.
Don't want him on the Habs even for a few million.
