Riley Kidney’s QMJHL team, Acadie-Bathurst Titan, are running about middle of the pack right now. They have been trending upwards since Washington sent Hendrix Lapierre back to them (hey Team Canada, he would have looked pretty good on the WJC team). They have now decided to go full in for this season after two huge trades that added to their firepower. They added the league’s top scorer Lafrance (3 points ahead of Roy and others) and a great third line centre in Belgarde in one big move. Then yesterday they added the league’s top scoring defender in Tourigny. Kidney should still maintain his 2C role, but should also benefit from getting a stronger winger in the domino from adding a top winger like Lafrance to the lineup. And their updated two PP units should be lethal.

Dichow gets a loan to Rögle in the SHL due to their backup being at the WJCs. Rögle and Frölunda (Norlinder’s team) are in a neck and neck battle for top spot in the SHL.
Dichow has been tearing it up in the Allsvenskan.

Both Russian based prospects were in action today. Kostenko is back in the VHL after a two game conditioning stint in the minors after returning from injury. He had an assist for the second straight game. He has also been playing over 20 minutes a game (almost 25 two nights ago).
Gordin played a whopping 1:43 with Sochi today after being a scratch on the 23rd.

Mailloux has lost a ton of development time over the past few seasons. This is a step in being able to play again.
I am not judging or opining on what he did or waxing poetic on the suspension and reinstatement, just reporting the facts that he is eligible to resume an OHL career with the Knights.

Still some hockey being played (for now). Xhekaj with a goal and an assist in Kitchener’s 6-3 win over Windsor (and fellow prospect Sobolev).

Right now, tomorrow’s London @ Erie match is one of only two OHL games scheduled to go and is not postponed (for now?). There is very little other hockey being played, so it will be interesting to see how much media attention the game gets. From a hockey perspective, it is just good to get him back into game situations. He has been able to practice with the team and work out, so it will be about getting back into game shape both physically and mentally. He only has four OHL games under his belt to date. He just needs to play now and see what the Hunters can do to jump start his development again.

Dichow with a nice finish to 2021 with a 20 save 9-1 win last night. Quite an impressive run for the young goalie.

Tuch scored his first two goals of the season. In the games I have watched, he has been around the puck a lot, just not going in for him.
Both goals were nice. Both showed good speed for a big man and nice finish. His second was the GWG too.

Dobeš with a 15 save shutout to wrap up 2021.
Stapley had the GWG and an assist in a big Denver win last night.
Here is another look at this sweet Stapley goal. It is a beauty.

Stapley continues to gather points for a strong Denver team. He had a goal and three assists to be in on all Denver goals in a 4-4 draw last night. The seventh rounder now has 22 points in 18 games this season. Could he be yet another 7th rounder to get an ELC this summer?
An interesting fact about the seventh rounders. The other game when the Habs were decimated with injuries and COVID, they had more 7th rounders in the lineup (Evans,Primeau, RHP) than first rounders (Poehling, Caufield). Things that make you go hmmmmmm.

I don’t get to talk about Pitlick much, but he converted a turnover into his first goal as a Gopher in a 5-3 exhibition win over the US NTDP U18 team.

Welcome back to the SHL Mattias. He and Frölunda finally saw some action today after having their holiday season games at the Spengler Cup cancelled when the event was shut down again this year. Frölunda lost 1-0, and Mattias was rocked very hard into the boards in the game. He was playing on the top D pairing alongside ex-Hab Christian Folin.

Kostenko has not seen any action since December 27th, so that might have been why Spartak had him playing on their MHL team while Khimik enjoys an extended VHL break. He had an assist today. In his 3 MHL games this season, he has three assists. I expect he will be back with Khimik once they start up again as he gets lots of ice time there.

Xhekaj gets to play at home and with fellow prospect Myšák for the rest of the season. Quite a lot of assets to acquire him, so they must really want him on the team.

Xhekaj is as mean as a rattlesnake and from his picture, he gives me the baby faced leg breaker vibe...
The kid needs more attention!

Xhekaj is as mean as a rattlesnake and from his picture, he gives me the baby faced leg breaker vibe... The kid needs more attention! Exceptionally tough and mean. And he can skate for a big guy. He has been putting up decent offensive numbers as an overager in the OHL too this season. Been beating this drum since rookie camp. He definitely has NHL potential as a lot of his game should translate to the pros (although I don’t see him being a big offensive producer at that level). Next year: Laval and let’s see.

I would love him to develop so he can play against guys like Tkachuk because Brady will become a handful and looks like Xhejak might be the guy to put up against him... if he does become that guy I'm buying his jersey

I am thrilled with the changes in the front office.....with one exception. It's my feeling Timmins was removed for p.r. purposes and not for performance. Not enough differentiation was made between the drafting and the development group. The reason we have a much larger number of prospects than we've ever had in the past is due to Timmins and his team doing a good job. As I've mentioned before, selecting where we did, when we did often affected the options available. The picks since 2015 (yes including Juulsen) were good overall. Juulsen's eye injury had a huge effect on his development. Since then, we have Juulsen and Vejdemo; Sergachev, Mete and Pezzetta; Poehling and Primeau; Kotkaniemi (yes, I still consider him a good pick and the last few weeks in Carolina are proving it), Romanov and Ylonen with Jordan Harris and Brett Stapley in the background. It gets harder to rate after that, since the guys are still young. And....he's been battling a horrible development area that seems to want to destroy whatever they touch. Since 2019 and still looking positive, we have; Caufield, Struble, Norlinder, Fairbrother, Dichow, and Rafael Harvey-Pinard; Guhle, Tuch, Mysak, Farrel and Dobes; this past year, ignoring Mailloux, he picked Kidney, Trudeau and Roy. Roy especially is looking like a steal. These last 3 years are still a couple of years away from proper grading, but that's still a lot of guys who at least are improving. It feels like we're going to regret Timmins' firing, unless Gorton can find someone equally as good or better.

Mailloux played his first game as an official Habs prospect tonight. 2 assists and +4 in his first game in ages. Bomb of a shot, jumps into the play, needs to tighten up his D coverage at times (that should get better with more games and good coaching IMO).

Just more on Mailloux. He was London’s top RD on the first pair. Hunters have some confidence in him.
Struble had an assist in the only goal in a 1-0 Northeastern victory tonight. Tuch had an assist in a 7-1 kick butt win for BU.

After playing tons of ice time in his last two games with Spartak’s junior club (exactly 25:34 both games), Kostenko suited back up with Khimik in the VHL as they played for the first time in ages. He had an assist on the GWG in OT. Five assists in three games in three nights. Good return to play for Dmitri.
