Meh. Berg did build a team that made the Finals, he does well in his trades, he did sign some great deals - Price (previous contract) and Pacioretty's 6 year deal, for example.
He was just too much of a one-man show so ultimately some details didn't get the attention they deserved, and too much personal judgment came into play.
I do think he could be of great use as part of a more structured organization with someone who'd have pushback from analytics to show when Berg was going too far off the reservation.
Over his 20 year career, he averaged about 62 games a season. His playoff average is 4 games. His teams missed the playoffs 12 of those 20 years and it would have been 13 if he wasn't traded from a non playoff team (the Pens) to a playoff team (the Canucks) late in his last season. He never won the Stanley Cup. This is not the picture of a winner and there's probably a reason for that besides luck.
Far be it from me to say anything positive about burgerbrain but winning anything in a team sport is more about the collection of people involved than it is about any individual...
Bergs issues, and there a numerous ones, were:
Lack of experience - 1 yr as ass. Gm
Nepotism - hired friends
Egoism - waiver wire pickups
Stubbornness - Markov/Radulov contracts
Control issues - not providing proper organizational support to players
Inferiority complex - Big Bird/mistreatment of Alumni
Lack of professionalism - hides behind a planter
Poor judge of character - Drouin/Kassian
Acceptance of mediocrity - Lefebvre
